NMW to increase again next year to £12.21 ph.

If you’ve not had a pay rise this year, despite bringing it up to your employer, and now there’s set to be another 6% NMW increase next year (which is fantastic, don’t get me wrong) the pay gap is narrowing ever more between skilled/unskilled employees.

Skilled and those with MANY years of experience, might as ditch their responsible/stressful jobs (which often keep you awake at night) and look for something that doesn’t have the added responsibility?

Almost 20 years experience means nothing to some employers! AIBU?

Any employers who have a view on this increase, please let me know how this might affect you and your staff.

Whilst I'm happy this will help those on minimum wage jobs I can't help but feel so demotivated in my own role. I'm a social worker and work for the public sector (not a local authority but other government sector) I am only on £2.20 an hour more than this
For the stress I'm under and case load I manage it's just not worth it. I know it isn't a job you do for the money but the pressure, expectations and accountability is crazy high :(

A typical band 6 was starting on £35k plus where I worked so that's the average household income and not far off twice the minimum wage.

I'd look for a new employer.

Blanketyre · 30/10/2024 02:04

Dh is planning to cut hours. He makes no profit as it is (manufacturing) and the NI and the MW increase is unaffordable. Yes, perhaps the company is destined to close anyway and he shouldn't be in business, but he's kept it hanging on to keep 20 staff in work, some of them have been there 40 years. I will be encouraging him to close the business. The most recent Tories were no help for small manufacturers and Labour are worse.

Yes but will you be satisfied washing pots in a pub? Isn't work more than just a paycheque? Rather than resent those on NMW getting a rise, which with inflation taken into account isn't much, those in your position need to advocate for better wages. Not simple I realise.

This is a good point.

I got made redundant just before the second lockdown and worked in a supermarket for "the duration" and it was soul destroying. Boring beyond words. I had never thrown a sickie in my life, but did three in 2 years at that job just because I hated every single sodding boring boring boring second.

Now I am NMW in a pub doing my old job (but without the management bullshit) and love it. So no, it isnt just about the money.

I predict on the back of this that lots of smaller businesses will fold, and lots of staff laid off in those that survive. If businesses have to increase wages, then they pass the cost to the consumer. Restaurants and cafes are already struggling because they’ve had to hike prices in line with gas and electric price increases, and decreasing footfall due to cost of living. I had half hoped that Labour might not do too much damage in the five year term they have, but I reckon at the rate they’re going, the country will be on its knees within a year. What a shitshow…

A country that can’t pay its lowest paid a decent wage that keeps up with the col is already on its knees and a shit show.

Tories increase NMW = good
Labour increase NMW - bad

Once I take my travel costs into consideration I might as well go wash pots in my local pub! End of the day, my job will be done and I can go home stress free!

You'll be lucky to have a local pub if the budget goes as anticipated. NMW is all well and good, except the reality is the cost of everything goes up in response and we are not actually gaining as much as the government want you to think.

Nmw goes up every April. Why is everyone being so dramatic about this one

Indeed. I suspect those saying they would have to raise their prices etc would have done it anyway.

Are you honestly throwing your toys out of the pram over people being paid better and maybe not struggling as much as a result?
Are you seriously saying that those that haven't trained in something deserve to be paid badly so you can feel better about your job/wage?

Ok then 🙄

Bump3tyBump · 30/10/2024 06:13

Because if you haven't had the good fortune to go to uni and get a good job, you must struggle and scrape by so the ones that did feel good about themselves.

Because it's more than expected and it's combined with the NI increase.

Hopefully you don't run a business!

Oh it wasn't an argument, it was an observation :)

Exactly there are some really rubbish business leaders out there if it’s a total catastrophe when a normal predicted financial increase that happens on the 1st April every year is a shock and not factored in.

Because of the other stuff as well like employers NI going up, Labour seem to have something against small businesses, they don't even recognise that they are workers. This is more about small businesses than large ones which will just make sure their profits and therefore dividends don't go down

It has gone up more than expected. It is combined with the increase in NI. Businesses that are struggling will find this increase really difficult. Small business owners aren't Alan Sugar you know, they probably work longer hours and have more stress than most.

Blanketyre · 30/10/2024 06:38

I admire your ability to google and then explain to people who run businesses that there's nothing to see here though.

DGPP · 30/10/2024 06:39

If your only way of running a business is to keep your workers on very low wages and not give them this rise, then maybe it’s time for a rethink. I wouldn’t want to live on NMW with a family

No I don't run a business I work for nmw and have to be topped up by benefits so that my children can eat.

It will be even harder when the large supermarkets inevitably whack the prices up because of this. Surely you don't think they will let their profits suffer.

It happens every year.

Bump3tyBump · 30/10/2024 06:46

And is smaller than last year under the Tories.

Then you are topped up by benefits. I don't know what you do or what your qualifications are but if you don't have the qualifications to get a better paid job that's not up to the taxpayer to make up your salary to the level of a qualified person.
