To think public smoking should be banned

I live in London and am sick of constantly trying to avoid breathing in disgusting cigarette smoke or the weird sickly smell of vapes. There’s only so much you can swerve, speed past people or cross the road. I feel it’s very selfish to smoke in public spaces, especially crowded streets when people can’t avoid breathing it in. Why can’t people take responsibility for their own health - and others - and just give it up? It’s disgusting and really selfish.

Are you bored? There are lots of other threads you could post snarky comments on, like ones about prams on buses and kids getting their ears pierced?

I'll wait for youir next ranty goady thread. I'm sure I won't have long to wait.

Fluufer · 29/10/2024 18:02

I agree. I absolutely hate it. It's horrid walking along the pavement behind a smoker, or waiting at a bus stop, or outside the bleeding school gates.
I imagine they wouldn't love it if I walked around spritzing hairspray all over them...

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/10/2024 18:03

@MotherOfCrocodiles wrong thread

Yes, because people who lurk waiting for threads to comment snipes on without actually contributing to the topic aren’t goady at all…

Bet you’re a 40-a-dayer.

I love smoking but whenever I smoke I feel like I need to go and hide somewhere no one will see me, or go somewhere where people can easily go around me.

TheNoonBell · 29/10/2024 18:05

Hitler wanted to ban smoking.

Yes exactly.

I should develop a flatulence problem. See how smokers like it when I do a horrible one in their direction.

but it’s ok, they can just hold their breath and swerve, like I have to do several times a day on a ten minute walk.

Anything but encroaching on personal freedoms!

Thank you for being a considerate smoker.

Hitler wanted to ban smoking.

Hitler also had a small moustache and a penchant for oil painting.

and?

  1. The world isn’t ‘your space’. Eww.
  2. Car fumes are harmful. Dispersed tobacco smoke isn’t.
BobbyBiscuits · 29/10/2024 18:09

I don't really see how they could enforce a law that bars people from smoking or vaping while walking up the public street? Obviously it's not nice to smell second hand smoke but outdoors I think is probably the healthiest place to do it as at least the smoke blows away.

You’re right. I and the other 51% of people who agree with my statement, do not live in the world - it is not our space. We exist on another plane.

Smoke isn’t dispersed if someone is smoking right in front of you and it’s blowing right in your face as you walk.

You don't love smoking. You love the relief you get from satisfying your addiction briefly.

Choosenandenough · 29/10/2024 18:13

I smoked for years - gave up 20 years ago. I don’t get the argument about drinking, drugs freedom etc as a comparison. If I drink I’m not forcing anyone else to drink. If I take drugs I’m not making anyone else take them. But if I smoke, I’m forcing the people around me to breathe it in. And no, I don’t drive. Not for ethical reasons, I just can’t!

Me too. Part of the badness of smoking.

I couldn't get upset about fags in London though what with the buses and cars kicking out fumes.

Smoking is dying out anyway. I get upset with the amount of swearing you hear everywhere and people being rude and entitled.

pavillion1 · 29/10/2024 18:13

i love the smell but then i only stopped because of the cost .

I do too. It’s more than a decade since I stopped smoking but I still love the smell. I have been known to linger around smokers.

EalingLucy · 29/10/2024 18:19

Totally agree OP. The people on this thread goading you are obviously feeling guilty because they know they smoke in people’s faces and that it’s gross!

SiobhanSharpe · 29/10/2024 18:19

My local hospital, both buildings and grounds, is a smoke free zone and is marked as such, especially around the entrances.
In another hospital I visited I saw a specific area outside, well away from any entrances, designated for smokers, labelled as such and cordoned or fenced off.
So it can be done.
When I visited Tokyo there were such areas in the street, I was curious as to why a group of people, mostly men, were herded into a smallish space cordoned off from the rest of the street. And there were glass boxes inside shopping centres and the like, also for smokers. Seems to work reasonably well, I wasn't assaulted by clouds of smoke and noxious smells at all.

Think smoking outside should include not smoking within 3m of a door which is used.

My previous workplace, a supermarket, people smoked by the entrance when it rained or in the winter as there is an overhang, The wind made the smoke waft into the store. Security and management asked the smokers to move. Got abuse.

Yet opposite there are two empty units with a similar sized overhangs to my previous work. No one smokes there.

dixon86 · 29/10/2024 18:21

How will it be policed?
