To think this woman was taking the piss?

In a supermarket car park with two DS’s, 2yrs and 11 months. It’s pretty busy (half term round here) and the car in front of me takes the last parent and baby space, leaving me to park in a regular space opposite and squeeze baby and toddler out of the car and into the trolley which outs had to put in the road.

Fair enough I guess, first come first served and all that, until I see the woman getting out of the car with a girl who looks about ready to sit her GCSE’s, who both saunter into the shop.

As it happened, we were both getting back to our cars at the same time, and I asked her if she was aware that she had parked in a parent and baby space. She said she was, but her car is too big for a regular space and she didn’t want it to get scratched. The car in question was a shiny black Jaguar 4x4.

AIBU to think this woman was entitlement personified?

There’s a chance I reminded her that the space is for parents with children, not parents with children and people with big cars, and if she’s so concerned about scratches she needs to learn to park her ridiculous car properly or get something smaller.

These comments are ridiculous.. You can’t seriously expect that you can go through life never ever being in a situation where you need to take your toddler(s) with you to a shop.

I get my shopping delivered but I still end up having to do small mop up shops every week & sometimes it can’t be avoided taking the children.

You may find other ways of life ridiculous, but you're way is not the only way, open your mind a little

Ime she may not be a cf.... I had a 7 seater when I needed it for my 6 dc. I once parked in a non p+c space in a small local supermarket shop. Car was hit quite badly. Said supermarket declined my request to have the reg of the twat who did it. The police also refused to take it further.. So I had to pay my excess and claim on my own insurance... If I had parked in a p+c which I had right to it would have been avoided... Maybe she had more dc at home.... Maybe she had also been unlucky.. And technically she did have a dc with her..

"Maybe she had more DC at home"

..............

.........

So? Confused

When my dear old dad was still alive, I sometimes would take him to the supermarket with me just for a change. He'd stay in the car as he was too frail to walk around the store. Used to park in the parent and child spaces - they don't specify that it’s the parent who has to be driving!

But yes, people who don’t want scratches or dings on their cars should park further away where it's less busy.

That wouldn't bother me at all xx

But the woman and the teenager - yeah, that's cheeky

She’s a parent with a child using a parent and child space 🤷‍♀️

They're normally for kids under 12

Demonhunter · 29/10/2024 16:12

People saying about her being a parent with a child are just being ridiculous for the sake of it. The extra space in these spots are for those eith car seats, but they're also right near paths and crossings to make it safer by not having to cross the car park. As soon as your child can go out and about by themselves, crossing busy roads etc, they can be deemed safe enough to cross over a car park.

Be very mindful of cameras recording pedestrians when you aren´t driving, you may fall foul of the data protection laws...This happened to someone I know and he was given a hefty fine and had to reset the cameras to only record when he was driving. You may find that YOU are the one in trouble.

I was quite clearly referring to your comment not a way of life.

The fact that you are suggesting you can get everything you ever need from an online food delivery & can avoid ever taking a toddler to a supermarket suggests that you’re the one lacking open mindedness 😊

BlueLimeRun · 29/10/2024 16:14

I glared at a women who parked in the last space, she said is something the matter? I pointed out where she’d parked and she huffed back in her car and parked elsewhere.

I don’t have a particularly furious glare so she must have felt guilty.

LivinInYourBigGlassHouseWithAView · 29/10/2024 16:15

Not everyone wants or can afford to have their food delivered.

Not really the issue.

Why would you park in parent and child if he wasn’t getting out the car?
They don’t specify the parent has to be driving but if you read the small print they do usually have an age on there, usually up to 12. If your dad was getting out then fair enough I wouldn’t bat an eye but if he’s sitting in the car it’s quite selfish to take up a space which a parent could use to give them more room getting children in and out

mamajong · 29/10/2024 16:18

There are bigger issues than parent and child spaces imo. When my kids were little we had a 7 seater and 5 kids 10 and under. There are never enough p&c spaces so I'd just park further away so we could be safe and have enough space. Imo these spaces are a nice to have but not essential and certainly not worth starting drama about with strangers.

Yanbu to be annoyed, clearly the other party was but yabu in letting this wind you up so much. I doubt your confrontation will make her change her behaviour, unless supermarkets start enforcing the rules / issuing fines this issue will remain because some people are just selfish. Let it go.

Shes a cf, but i wouldn't go shopping with toddlers etc, get it delivered

I go shopping with my preschooler and baby. They both enjoy it (not so me, but hey) and it sometimes fills a morning and tick a box off my to-do list. 💁‍♀️

Sorry, please could you remind me which party was entitlement personified.

The one parking in the space not meant for her? Or her shiny new car

Why bring your children into the shop just get it delivered

Why not read the OP's posts?

Ok so I’m 47 and my mum is in her 70s (no mobility issues). Shall we park in one because technically we are a parent and child?
Don’t be a dick. We all know what they are for.

Nanny0gg · 29/10/2024 16:23

PuddlesPityParty · 29/10/2024 15:55

What? Tesco also does deliveries.

Why would you pay Tesco to deliver a cake?

Nanny0gg · 29/10/2024 16:25

viennawaitsforyouu · 29/10/2024 14:21

Okay, why don’t you just make sure that you buy everything for that week in one shop?

Because some things you want aren't available everywhere?

AngeloMysterioso · 29/10/2024 16:26

Butchyrestingface · 29/10/2024 15:19

Do you know what the age restriction was on using the P&C space in that car park, @AngeloMysterioso ? Someone on the thread has said it was 15 at their local.

I just google street viewed it and (assuming it’s still there as the streetview is from a while back) it would appear that the woman parked literally right in front of a sign that reads…

Parent & Child Parking
We’ve made more room for buggies, so please only park here with children under 5

OP posts:
Grumpycashier · 29/10/2024 16:27

Would have been such a shame if your raging toddler had thrown the car door open mid tantrum right into the side of her car

Well, good that you have that information to hand now lest she come back for round 2. Smile

Ginnnny · 29/10/2024 16:40

I’d forgotten how much this behaviour annoyed me until I had a new baby in September!

Nogaxeh · 29/10/2024 16:41

I think parent and child spaces are ridiculous, there should be stricter legal limits on the maximum size of cars and, if car parking spaces are too small to get children out of a car, then car parking spaces are too small, and people without children shouldn't be expected to shimmy awkwardly out of their car just because everyone seems to have an absurdly huge SUV that doesn't fit into tiny parking spaces.

Heatherjayne1972 · 29/10/2024 16:41

This behaviour used to really annoy me when I had small children
maybe p+c spaces should be at the far end of the carpark- surely that would encourage ‘better’ use of them
Disabled spaces near the door and plenty more of them of course
(obviously you can be pg and disabled)
