If you were letting off fireworks last night what was it for?

I’m assuming Halloween? But are fireworks a Halloween thing? I’m pregnant with my first baby so it’s been a while since I went to a kid’s Halloween party

Genuinely curious

We will be letting them off tonight for my daughter's birthday.

It coincides with a very local huge bonfire event so we won't be disturbing anyone.

They seemed to become a Halloween thing around Covid, I think everyone was desperate to lift their spirits.

Jifmicroliquid · 26/10/2024 09:42

They ought to be banned. It’s the most stressful week of the year for many pet owners. We have to get sedatives from the vet for two of our dogs.

Beansandneedles · 26/10/2024 09:42

Assuming you're not near a wedding venue, it feels like firework season is mid October - mid November around my neck of the woods! Plus diwali (end of this month), Eid etc as they often have fireworks.

Or maybe maud from number 72 hit a big birthday?

Xiaoxiong · 26/10/2024 09:42

It's Diwali next Thursday, so some people might have got an early start on the weekend before. Like how people do fireworks the weekends before and after bonfire night if it falls midweek.

Left · 26/10/2024 09:43

I heard some last night, possibly for Diwali 🪔 x

1990s · 26/10/2024 09:43

I can answer for the 14 year olds round here… for fun, and to be a bit of a dickheady teenager.

Gardendiary · 26/10/2024 09:46

It’s almost certainly for Diwali depending on where in the country you are. I work in a school and the whole place has been decorated, it looked lovely.

soberfabulous · 26/10/2024 09:49

It's Diwali.

AllesAusLiebe · 26/10/2024 10:19

Diwali isn't until next week. I know this because I work with people who celebrate it.

It's more than likely idiots who've bought cheap ones from Aldi and can't read a calendar. We heard some after 10 on Tuesday night in the distance. Absolute cretins.

JeanLundegaard · 26/10/2024 10:29

I went to a Diwali celebration last night and my town centre is having theirs tonight.

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/10/2024 10:57

Aldi are selling silent ones and I believe other supermarkets are too. Visually they’ll be the same I suppose, but without the noise.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 26/10/2024 11:02

Now silent fireworks are available I think the noisy ones should be phased out.

Although I’ve also thought for years that they shouldn’t be available to the public. I don’t know how my cat will be because I’ve only adopted her recently, but my sister’s poor dog is always terrified.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 26/10/2024 11:04

Our school did a display last night as a fundraiser. It was sort of an early bonfire night but also for the last day before half term.

It must be much easier to get the people in to do them if you remove yourself from the night itself and then you get a bigger crowd as people aren’t elsewhere

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/10/2024 11:07

There may be early Diwali celebrations.

MissMuffetisin · 26/10/2024 11:09

At least you don’t live in Spain. Their use of fireworks is crazy ! Yards and yards of firecrackers followed by what sound like mortar bombs - makes the windows rattle. No pretty colours, just the huge bangs. During the day time and late night for fiestas or concerts etc .

Frequency · 26/10/2024 11:09

They've been going off every night for weeks here, starting at 4-5pm ish. Why? It is not even dark at 5pm.

Luckily, none of my animals are frightened of them. Big dog enjoys watching them and rushes to the window whenever he hears them or barges the back door open to get into the garden, which is annoying. One of the chihuahuas likes barking at them to join in with the racket which is also annoying but at least they are not frightened.

I really feel for people who have children or animals who are afraid. They should be banned or at the very least restricted to bonfire night and NYE. The people who set them off on other nights are selfish twats, IMO. How can parents prepare their children when they're going on for months at all hours?

TickingAlongNicely · 26/10/2024 11:11

We have permission for running our "official" display on the 8th November... it will be a long season this year.

(Official as in the we get funding from the council to run it)

Toomanysquishmallows · 26/10/2024 11:11

In my area , fireworks start going off every night around now , it gets really annoying. Obviously it’s fine for Divali and guy Fawkes .

Well done you.

You know how people don't just celebrate Christmas for the 12 Days or how there are Easter events on for a whole.month..?

TurtlesDoNotPetsMake · 26/10/2024 11:13

I really feel for all the animals in the meat and dairy industry, shut up in barns and cages. It must be very frightening for them too. At least pets have a kind hand to reassure them.

Edited

Well, to extend the OP's question, why is there a very huge local bonfire event happening on October 26th?

Yeah, people forget about livestock and wildlife. People moan about cats catching birds constantly, yet killing off dozens of birds every night for some pretty lights is fine?!

At least cats can usually only manage to catch sick birds.

Beansandneedles · 26/10/2024 11:21

@Frequency not to mention wildlife!

Well Obviously working with people who celebrate Diwali qualifies you to know when everyone celebrates it 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

lots of people celebrated it last night & many others will tonight, as well as this week & next weekend.

i feel sorry for all animals that get frightened, especially wild or those owned but in fields, less so for dogs people have had from
puppies as they should have been acclimatised to them as puppies.
