If you were letting off fireworks last night what was it for?

I’m assuming Halloween? But are fireworks a Halloween thing? I’m pregnant with my first baby so it’s been a while since I went to a kid’s Halloween party

Genuinely curious

Round ours, cos you're 14, a dickhead, and bored.

We live in a naice city but the place goes absolutely feral around this time of year. I really feel for the police and fire service.

ManchesterLu · 26/10/2024 11:24

It always starts at this time of year as there's more in the shops because of bonfire night, so people buy them and let them off. Could be for anything.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 26/10/2024 11:02

Now silent fireworks are available I think the noisy ones should be phased out.

Although I’ve also thought for years that they shouldn’t be available to the public. I don’t know how my cat will be because I’ve only adopted her recently, but my sister’s poor dog is always terrified.

@EmpressaurusDeiGatti

the bang is part of it for many of us, though since experiencing proper fireworks in Valencia I'm spoilt for ever more.

kittyfayne · 26/10/2024 11:27

If you live near me, it'll be the absolute dickheads who were driving around letting off fireworks from a car to deliberately frighten people.

Yes, a car. My dogs were panting with fear and it scared the shit out of me and the DC. They were far too close.

I'm not proud of this thought but I did hope one of the fireworks slipped and went off inside the car. Fucking idiots.

Well Obviously working with people who celebrate Diwali qualifies you to know when everyone celebrates it 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

lots of people celebrated it last night & many others will tonight, as well as this week & next weekend.

i feel sorry for all animals that get frightened, especially wild or those owned but in fields, less so for dogs people have had from
puppies as they should have been acclimatised to them as puppies.

We’ve tried to acclimatise ours to them but to no avail. It’s not that simple. Some dogs are nervous by nature and no matter how much acclimatisation you do, you can’t recreate the chaos of bonfire night.
We also have a farm/livery yard. Let me tell you that bonfire night is no fun at all for us.

Aldi are selling silent ones and I believe other supermarkets are too. Visually they’ll be the same I suppose, but without the noise.

I think these are a great idea.

I used to love watching them when I was younger but now I have a little dog who is very frightened of them so I see them differently.

Do you know how hard it is to "acclimatise" some breeds to sudden loud noises? I'm a qualified dog behaviourist and I don't manage it with every single dog I have ever had.

My parent's dog was always terrified no matter how many weeks I spent working with him in the run-up. I managed to get him calmer, to the point where he stopped panicking and running into things and harming himself but he would still sit and shake for hours after they stopped.

And what about ND children? Or veterans? How do we acclimatize them? Wildlife and small pets like rabbits?

I'm sticking to my theory that the people who let them off outside of bonfire night, NYE, and Divali are selfish, unintelligent twats.

At least you don’t live in Spain. Their use of fireworks is crazy ! Yards and yards of firecrackers followed by what sound like mortar bombs - makes the windows rattle. No pretty colours, just the huge bangs. During the day time and late night for fiestas or concerts etc .

Yeah I love it!!

the first time I experienced it my hotel french doors were basically in the front of a church, I woke up thinking there was some kind of terrorist attack.

I love the deep feeling you get.

but also at night how beautiful & loud the actual fireworks. Living in Valencia was fantastic.

They've been going off every night for weeks here, starting at 4-5pm ish. Why? It is not even dark at 5pm.

Luckily, none of my animals are frightened of them. Big dog enjoys watching them and rushes to the window whenever he hears them or barges the back door open to get into the garden, which is annoying. One of the chihuahuas likes barking at them to join in with the racket which is also annoying but at least they are not frightened.

I really feel for people who have children or animals who are afraid. They should be banned or at the very least restricted to bonfire night and NYE. The people who set them off on other nights are selfish twats, IMO. How can parents prepare their children when they're going on for months at all hours?

Why is bonfire night ok, but not other things such as Diwali?

I forgot about Diwali. Of course, it should be acceptable to let them off on Diwali. however, I do think we should start using silent ones and I would prefer them to be banned completely for everyone. They are terrible for the environment and wildlife. But that will never happen so I will settle for them only being allowed for certain nights, including religious festivals.

J1Dub · 26/10/2024 11:34

In Ireland there are usually fireworks in the run up to Halloween. They're illegal, but easy to get on the black market in October.

@kittyfayne

no, it's not a very nice thing to 'hope'! But I can't say I haven't wished similar. The little fucks that aim them at animals I'd happily string up and do the bonfire under them!

Frequency · 26/10/2024 11:36

Someone is letting them off now.

Fucking why? It is 11:30 am!

Fortunately, they are ones that crackle and fizzle not bang. Big dog is pacing the garden staring at the sky.

no having a farm/livery is no fun at times like this. Having spent time living on a farm
I don't need telling.

Absolutely. The sound, the lights, even the smell. It's the full experience.
Soundless fireworks are a bit of a damp squib.

Acclimatised to loud explosions? How does one do that, pray tell?

Was every dog not once a puppy? or every cat a kitten?

Some animals are much more sound sensitive than others.

Recordings of fireworks don't work. It's the smell of the wretched things as well.

It's horrible for many animals, and fireworks should be banned for public to buy.

Frequency · 26/10/2024 11:49

They've stopped now but he has still managed to squeeze his massive backside onto my tiny windowsill with his nose pressed against the glass in anticipation 🤔

I have no clue why he likes them. I actually had not done any work with him around fireworks when he first saw them because we were taken by surprise. It was September, DD was walking him off-leash on a nearby field when one of the adjoining gardens started letting them off. She panicked because she assumed he'd bolt in fear but he was transfixed. It took her an hour to convince him to start walking home. She had to text me to tell me she was stuck on the common in case I started worrying about how long they'd been gone.

He's an idiot in general. He is part rottweiler, loves fireworks but is terrified of crows and chihuahuas 😂

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 26/10/2024 11:57

I worry about the silent fireworks- at least with the noise you can judge where they are and stay away. The lack of noise makes me think that I could get too close or not know when one is being thrown my way.

AutumnLeaves24 · 26/10/2024 11:44

@Frequency

Some dogs don't care. Our last two were never bothered, but current one is afraid.
It's incredibly smug to think that just because one dog isn't terrified that others cannot be, even when owned by the same person.

It's not ''training'' it's their innate character.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 26/10/2024 11:59

So the silent fireworks aren’t actually silent? Hmm

At least, if fireworks were limited to licenced public displays people could still enjoy them for Diwali, Bonfire Night & New Year, there would be fewer injuries & animals & birds wouldn’t be so traumatised. Acclimatising is all very well but you can’t even try to acclimatise wildlife.

Same
I never used to mind them until I was drying my hair one year and got warm, opened the window and someone put a firework through it
I grabbed the cat and ran when I saw it landed next to me and hadn't gone off yet
