Without asking. She came home like this.
Are there any hairdressers here who can recommend what to do?

Well based on that I hope she doesn't do any cooking or driving.

My concern is more why a woman with glaucoma looked at a sleeping child and thought, "I think I'll cut a fringe." Isn't that a bit of a worrying decision to you? I'd be wondering what her next decision would be. Maybe she'll get her ears pierced. Give her a glass of wine. Not bother with the car seat today. It's a really odd and illogical thing to do.

She didn’t say her mum cut it when she was asleep, where did you get that from? The mother said she might try and fix it up herself when daughter is asleep and the rest of your worries are hypothetical.

Startingagainandagain · 25/10/2024 22:57

Your mother has shown really poor judgement.

Someone with glaucoma should not be waving scissors in your daughter's face and near her eyes...

It is also really bizarre that she decided to cut her fringe out of the blue and without your permission.

I don't think you should leave your daughter alone with her again of her behaviour is that odd and thoughtless.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 25/10/2024 22:59

According to DF the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is about two weeks.

PorridgeEater · 25/10/2024 23:11

Yes this was foolish of your mother and she should not have done it without your permission. Did she realise / admit her mistake? If her judgement is poor I'd be a little wary of leaving the child with her for any length of time / any situation which is not routine.

That's a bit OTT

A woman with glaucoma put scissors near a child's eyes. Never mind the bad cut, thats dangerous

HoppyFish · 25/10/2024 23:15

Ooops. Maybe try a bob or something...or try the hairdressers. And seek solace in the fact that you will all be laughing at this in years to come !😂

Ihopeithinkiknow · 25/10/2024 23:18

A few years ago my daughter kept asking me to cut her hair and I said to her " I can't cut it because it will turn out wrong lol everyone thinks it's easy but it's not" anyway after her pleading with me I attempted to cut it and guess what? It was a mess lol got her booked in at the hairdressers to get it evened up and told the hairdresser I tried to cut it and a woman sat waiting for someone asked me if I did it with my eyes shut 😂

Everyone thinks they can cut hair but they can't and my daughter hasn't asked me again.

Exactly my thinking too!! If the kid did it herself I'd laugh about it, but the grandmother doing that would be very concerning... It's the complete lack of judgement that would worry me.

Once you learn how to hold the scissors properly (they kind of balance on the edge of your hand to keep them steady. It's hard to explain) cutting a straight line is fairly simple if you have the right scissors.

The scissors make all the difference. Even Vidal Sassoon would struggle to do a decent fringe trim with a pair of kitchen scissors or the shite hair scissors they sell in Home Bargains.

With blunt scissors or scissors that don't have the right edge the hair sort of bunches up and it's impossible to get a straight cut.

Neaten up like this and it will soon grow

Can't quite see this working on a two year old.

missintolerance · 25/10/2024 23:35

@godmum56 some people with glaucoma, particularly in the early stages, can have perfect central vision. Some are still able to legally drive. Having glaucoma doesn’t automatically make someone a danger to themselves and others.

OP, It’s hair. It will grow back. Just ask mum not to do it again and maybe get your DD regular haircuts with a hairdresser. And don’t make a drama of it.

Remaker · 25/10/2024 23:38

Perhaps we need a MN ‘mild annoyance’ bingo card. We’ve had beyond furious and apoplectic. Has anyone spotted an incandescent yet?

I have to assume none of these posters have a teenage DS. Mine is sporting something called a burst fade atm. It looks …interesting and we paid for it haha! It’s hair, I really don’t care. On a 2 year old everyone will just assume she did it herself.

Are you sure your DD hasn’t done it & Mum is covering for her? That does not look like a grown up has cut it.

This. Our youngest cut his fringe with wavy plastic scissors from a Charlie and Lola magazine the evening before he started school.
the school photos were legend 🤣

JFDIYOLO · 25/10/2024 23:56

Are you absolutely certain it was your mum?

I did that to myself when I was little. There is a picture of me sitting in a corner and I look like something out of Oliver Twist.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 25/10/2024 23:59

@Frequency please don't encourage me to buy hairdressing scissors lol I'm worried that with the correct scissors I will incorrectly believe I'm now good at it and try and cut hair Willy nilly lol

If it helps deter you a decent pair of hair scissors will set you back at least £100. My current ones were £135 on half price sale.

For fringe trimming, you'd probably get away with a pair of student/training scissors from Salon Services. They're around £45. Trimming a fringe should be manageable for most people because cutting a straight line is fairly easy. Cutting several straight lines and getting them all the same length takes a bit more practice.

If anyone does fancy giving fringe trimming a go to save time traipsing your daughters to salons every few weeks for a 30-second trim my top tip would be don't use tension to start with, cut the middle section of the fringe dry and freehand so you can see how short it will be when it falls naturally. After the first snip use tension and match up the rest of it to the bit you cut freehand.

9999problems · 26/10/2024 00:29

The one and only time I entrusted my mum to look after my daughter (I had a job interview and I'd exhausted all other options) she came back with a wonky fringe - a fringe we'd spent the previous 6 months growing out. When I confronted her, she simply said, "she looks better with a fringe though." Gah.

Skybluepinky · 27/10/2024 12:44

strange u r leaving yr DD with someone with sight issues that can’t be resolved and allowed her loose with scissors around her.
