How far do your boycotts go? For example do you boycott Microsoft products because of Gates? Amazon because of the famous terrible working conditions in warehouses? Delivery services like Uber for their policies on paying workers ?

Not MS because I need it for work and Bill Gates is a philanthropist. I do try and avoid Amazon due to tax evasion and treatment of workers. I can’t say I’m always on that though. It’s an area I fall down on when I need something quickly! No one’s perfect.

What prompted me thinking was seeing a woman at the charging point who had a Tesla and then thinking that EM is a toxically masculine man, a misogynist, a racist and a supporter of Trump and Putin. I just couldn’t knowingly line his pockets.

Have you got evidence to back up your claims about this man?

Or a very good lawyer?

SerendipityJane · 25/10/2024 18:08

Musk is a total bellend.

But SpaceX are doing real science and engineering, which is rare these days.

It's complicated

I use a iPhone which has a well documented history of terrible working practices at the factories where it’s produced so do not look at Tesla owners and think Nazi.

Most people in the West use gadgets with lithium batteries despite the cruelty that goes on with mining the needed elements.

Yes. It’s very hard to be a 100% conscientious consumer. I do my best but still plenty of my purchases are not as ethical as I’d like them to be.

I never get this argument. That doesn't mean you can't make buying choices when you do know their views.

You can do whatever you want. But CEOs of massive global companies are not known for their impeccable morals and plenty of practices of big companies are known to be problematic, yet no one seems to care about them as they aren't the current big bad.

Yes. As is life. No easy answers.

Gates has links with Epstein and a track record of sexual harassment at Microsoft.

So what consumer choices do you make because of principles or values rather than just what you want.

I don't buy Nestle products because of their promotion of infant formula in developing countries, or The Sun because I used to live in Liverpool, or The Body Shop because of their appalling treatment of JK Rowling. I don't care if other people do though.

Ah, so you’re happy to financially support someone who sexually harrasses people, if you’re also paid to do so. Interesting

indigovapour · 25/10/2024 18:14

@Orchidzombiewatch I don't really buy a lot of diamonds, sorry.

Can you tell us what you particularly admire about the CEOs and shareholders of other car companies? VW? BMW? I'm sure they're all great people.

Drfosters · 25/10/2024 18:18

the thread has veered off the question. You can boycott a company for all manner of reasons but specifically should you boycott because of someone’s (completely legal) political affiliations?

Zebedee999 · 25/10/2024 18:26

Tesla moved battery tech on in leaps and bounds as well as pushing EVs forward massively. Musk is doing similar with space exploration.
The world needs companies like Tesla to innovate and most geniuses (as EM is) are often a bit OTT/off the wall/on the spectrum. I don't hate him for that.

It's a bit like all the women on MN going crazy to get tickets for Oasis ... despite their many examples of misogyny.

ZoeyBartlett · 25/10/2024 18:26

I have two Tesla's both bought before Elon showed himself up as a complete nutter and when there were hardly any other electric cars around. I still love them and the reasons I got them ( I do think electric cars are better for climate) still apply. I'm not intending to sell.

Ew. But nothing has come out about him being a paedophile or abusing women as far as I know.

Exactly the same way I feel about the opinions of the CEOs of every company of every product I buy or service I use.

When I go to buy clothes I look up the comapny and CEO and check the CEO isn't a misogynist, when I go to the supermarkets I check if the CEOs of the company have been hobnobbing with the wrong people, when I go to get my child a toy I research the CEO of the toy manufacturer. I check every CEO thoroughly before every purchase.

itsmabeline · 25/10/2024 18:41

I haven't checked the CFOs though, and they have a lot of sway and will often take over from a CEO when a CEO steps down due to reprehensible behaviour, so I think I'll need to check again.

Do you check?

CrystalSingerFan · 25/10/2024 18:46

Disclaimer: I don't own a Tesla, but I was stuck behind one on a queue on the M5 once, so had time to think.

Can any of the owners tell me why on earth the car's logo looks like an IUD and how they feel about that? Is it some kind of complex safety-first metaphor?

We all use or consume something that makes someone else's life shit!
All of us!

Yes. It’s very hard to be a 100% conscientious consumer. I do my best but still plenty of my purchases are not as ethical as I’d like them to be.

Why not? Why can't you put your principals in action?

Itsalemon · 25/10/2024 20:41

We had a choice of a Tesla or a Polestar a few years back and the Polestar won no contest mostly because of EM. No I won't be lining his pockets and that was before all this Trump allegiance! Of course you can't know everything about every CEO but someone as blatant as him? You can't fail to notice can you and I would and have acted accordingly.
