A scotch egg should be considered a breakfast menu item

It's sausage and egg. How did it end up in the picnic category rather than the breakfast category?

After a long stressful day at work, this is where my mind is at. But I do think I'm right, it should be moved to the breakfast category with immediate effect. Perhaps even pushing avocados out to make room for it.

Yes, surely the toast gets unpleasantly soggy? <shudders>

I only use tinned tomatoes in cooking. Wouldn't be without them for that purpose, but if I want tomatoes as a distinct element in a meal I use fresh.

My grandad thinks that tinned tomatoes on toast with black pepper is the food of the gods!

He used to have fresh tomatoes on top back in the day, but he says they all have no flavour now!

Well, he's not wrong there. I pay extra to get vine tomatoes because I think they do have a bit more flavour. I also keep them at room temperature, not in the fridge. No getting away though from the fact that supermarkets are buying tomatoes that are all the same regulation size, shape and colour instead of looking for the best-tasting ones.

I have peeled plum tomatoes with a cooked breakfast instead of beans - they're much better with fried bread than they are with toast though.

Yes, such a shame the supermarkets do that - it's not like that in other countries. He did have an allotment where he grew his own, but he can't manage it anymore. I might see if I can give a patch of the garden over to some tomato plants and surprise him!

Tinned plum tomatoes were the veg if we had a fry up for tea when I was a kid. Iirc the toms were warmed in a pan and fished out, the juice being discarded, so they weren't too soggy.

They had a lot better flavour than the fresh tomatoes commonly available in the 60s and 70s, which were usually underripe and tasteless.

I have had cold scotch eggs and not been keen. I would like to be able to make one so I could serve it warm for BRUNCH (not sure I could face it first thing)
So my question is -if you want the egg yolk to be runny how the heck do you peel a suitably soft boiled egg?

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 25/10/2024 15:58

No. What kind of savage eats a scotch egg for breakfast!

The only time I can think I would be tempted is with a Bloody Mary in a pub for brunch.
(actually, that sounds rather savage but also quite good)

It's the same as gammon egg and chips. This is a breakfast item. Yet it's also a dinner item as well.

Don't even get me started on what's considered Brunch

Chips are not breakfast.

<bangs gavel>

It is pocket meat. Like a pork pie

MrsPostmanPat · 25/10/2024 16:45

Now I really want a scotch egg for tea!

ArseyVarsey · 25/10/2024 17:40

A scotch egg is a thing of beauty. Of course I’d eat one for breakfast. I’ve had some with black pudding in them, some with haggis. I’d eat them hot or cold. But they have to be quality. Not cheap shite coated in orange breadcrumbs from the local petrol station shop.
And a sausage roll. If they can eat pastries for breakfast in Europe, why not sausage rolls?

ArseyVarsey · 25/10/2024 17:44

@Breadcat24 when you soft boil an egg, put lots of cold water around it immediately. Stops the cooking process. Then you can peel successfully.
Believe it or not, you can deep fry poached eggs too. Again, once cooked, place into cold water. Drain. Coat in flour, egg, panko breadcrumbs and fry. Works a treat with steamed asparagus. And yes, was a chef 😉😉😉

Sgtmajormummy · 25/10/2024 17:59

A Scotch egg is just a portable version of gala pie, so it’s Pub Grub!

Too much heft. It's a hefty food item, particularly if homemade. My own attempts at scotch eggs have resulted in sizes more akin to safety headwear rather than 'snack'.

I've just spat my drink out laughing.

Can I have yours?

Of course. It's at the back of the fridge gathering mould but if you want it..

Anicecumberlandsausage · 25/10/2024 22:09

I like Scotch Eggs but they give me heartburn. The fresh runny ones are best, the cold ones from the supermarket are rubbish. I just need a packet of rennies afterwards, either way.

BirthdayRainbow · 25/10/2024 22:12

I'm going to make a scotch egg from scratch one day.
