A scotch egg should be considered a breakfast menu item

It's sausage and egg. How did it end up in the picnic category rather than the breakfast category?

After a long stressful day at work, this is where my mind is at. But I do think I'm right, it should be moved to the breakfast category with immediate effect. Perhaps even pushing avocados out to make room for it.

A black pudding scotch egg warmed up is definitely a breakfast item🤤

StarSlinger · 24/10/2024 22:33

We sometimes have breakfast for dinner though.

PersilPower · 24/10/2024 22:34

Breakfast? Wash your mouth out you charlatan!

Another whoosh - I appreciate I maybe on my own here with my nod to the great scotch egg controversy of 2020.

Made me snigger, I got it 😷 . And the handmade ones in my local shop are very definately a substantial meal !

Scutterbug · 24/10/2024 22:37

I would happily eat a scotch egg for breakfast. In fact I have. I often say that if I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, it would be that.

quirkyquerty · 25/10/2024 07:10

Morning everyone, scotch eggs as the ready?

But why not? Sausage and eggs are accepted at breakfast as separate items, why not combined. Quite a good 'on the go breakfast, if portability is your concern. Scrap the cereal bars bring in the scotch eggs.

Make a scotch egg cereal bar!

The question is… is it a substantial meal?

I think it was finally declared to be one! Goodness, those were the days Grin

Morning everyone, scotch eggs as the ready?

If I had one I would have it for breakfast, alongside an avocado!

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/10/2024 08:20

So a Scottish breakfast would be egg wrapped in haggis, covered with tattie scones and deep fried then allowed to cool?....

DilemmaDelilah · 25/10/2024 08:21

@choppolata can you cook/heat avocado? And surely, although you have eliminated the egg, there is still the 'scotch' bit which isn't vegan.

You could, I expect, make something similar with vegan sausage mix, but I'm not sure what you would fill it with.... It needs to be something fairly substantial that will hold its shape, but not something that needs a lot of cooking unless it can be cooked first.... Hmmm worth thinking about! Mushroom? Onion? Potato? A tomato perhaps! An interesting conundrum.

The question is… is it a substantial meal?

That “scotch egg is a substantial meal’ was the only highlight of Covid for me. To have the government legislate that I should eat scotch egg when I went to the pub is the sort of law I can really get behind.

@quirkyquerty this is a very important question you’ve raised. Thank you. I think the unbreakfastyness of the SE is predicated on its temperature.

twentysevendresses · 25/10/2024 08:27

I'd happily eat a scotch egg at any time of day. For me it falls into the same category as trifle 😍 Everyone knows that trifle is great for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea...or in a portable container at a picnic 😍

WorriedRelative · 25/10/2024 08:37

There is never a bad time to have a Scotch Egg. I bloody loved a scotch egg!

FrenchandSaunders · 25/10/2024 08:38

I hate sweet breakfasts like cereal and fruit so this would be right up my street!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/10/2024 08:41

What about the smoked haddock Scotch egg, then? Smoked haddock is also traditionally a breakfast food (for the aristocracy, anyway - those glorious Downton Abbey style breakfast spreads always include some sort of smoked fish). Never had a SHSE. Are they eaten hot or cold? I don't fancy the idea of cold fish, I must say, but this Tesco recipe says 'leave to cool before serving'. Hmm

... but then I do like smoked mackerel pate, and that's cold. Hmmm.

ThePinkFrenchFancyPlease · 24/10/2024 21:49

Nope. Egg covered in sausage meat, wrapped in hash brown instead of breadcrumbs. We have invented the uber-Scotch egg.

Any sort of Scotch egg makes an entirely suitable breakfast, and there shall the matter rest.

That sounds good, but it is missing a layer of batter.

As a person who has soup for breakfast, I'm firmly in the camp of 'make your own rules'.
(Though I wouldn't have a scotch egg for breakfast. )

This. So far today I've had a piece of brownie and a slice of leftover pizza.

I also wouldn't have a scotch egg at any time because I don't like egg yolk unless it's mushed up in mayonnaise, but I sometimes get a pack of quorn picnic eggs as a late breakfast if I'm out and about somewhere.

And to further pimp up the 'uber scotch egg' my offering is 'uber canape hash browns' which is a hash brown topped with egg mayonnaise with an artfully positioned cocktail sausage garnish.

I have found my people. The scotch egg and trifle lovers. It’s like my 70s childhood all over again.

twentysevendresses · 25/10/2024 09:51

@ThePinkFrenchFancyPlease

🙌🏼 definitely a thing in the 70s (and 80s/90s/00s 😂)

DilemmaDelilah · 25/10/2024 11:30

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g the smoked haddock scotch egg sounds good! If only I liked eggs...

StillSmallVoice · 25/10/2024 11:38

@Bjorkdidit leftover pizza is fab for breakfast. Bread, cheese, tomato...yum

AnnPerkins · 25/10/2024 11:44

When I was growing up we used to have homemade scotch eggs served with tinned plum tomatoes and boiled potatoes.

So you're all wrong; scotch eggs are dinner.

Really want some now.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 25/10/2024 11:59

Sausages and eggs are acceptable at all three meals. Full cooked breakfast , sausage rolls or omelettes at lunch, sausage egg and chips for dinner (or sausage and mash, and cheese soufflé with salad)

They aren’t breakfast food because they are every time food. They defy your narrow categories @quirkyquerty , and are lovely at any time.

The Jolly Fisherman in Craster does a kipper Scotch egg, @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g . It is a thing of wonder. I didn’t even know it I liked kippers.
