If the UK is made to pay reparations where will that leave other nations who were or indeed still are involved in slavery?

I really don't understand, @DanaJune11, why you think tax for the individual wouldn't increase.

It absolutely would.

And no, you have not answered as to where the money should come from. You insist we pay and leave the govt to decide the details - completely absolving yourself ot the harm that causes to the department the funds are taken from.

I merely have to hope education is left the frick alone this Wednesday because if not, my household's sustainability will be directly affected. And my mental health

But hey, as long as you look virtuous.

And I'll say AGAIN,

I've already answered it!

Rather than spend forever repeatedly saying "I've already answered it", could you perhaps make it easier for those of us who have read the whole thread but missed it, and repeat it one more time?

I've paid working tax all my working life that will have contributed to that- as did my parents, grandparents, great-grandparents etc. Not a single one of my ancestors was ever involved in the slave trade in any way. Should I get the money back.

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 16:51

Yes but it's not just about the people.

The actions that the UK did, have caused long lasting damage that affects countries to this day

Would you perhaps elaborate? Could you provide, say, a paragraph, listing maybe ten points? Or even five or six facts?

mollyfolk · 26/10/2024 18:16

To who though?

To the countries that want them back for their own museums - Nigeria, Greece, New Zealand.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 26/10/2024 18:23

To the countries that want them back for their own museums - Nigeria, Greece, New Zealand.

Even that isn't totally clear-cut though. Not all countries are in a position to offer safe custodianship.

mollyfolk · 26/10/2024 18:28

I don't think it is workable. And I say that as an Irish person. Obviously then we would be justified in asking for reparations - our population has still not recovered from the famine where the British callously shipped food being grown here out of the country. And our culture and language was decimated which still leaves a mark today.

I don't think there would be an end to the wrongs of Britain. I think it's more about acknowledging the wrong and having policies that improve life in the counties affected.

I dont know who you are. I'm a bit alarmed that you are now stalking me .

Here's an insight for you petal. People on mumsnet always post on more than one thread.

It's called a forum . Most posters post on more than on thread.

Can you stop stalking me now

"shameless bitch descendants of slave owners" - and yet Mumsnet have removed comments for much less. Something tells me the moderators on shift today have a bias.

Everything every country has done in the last 500 years has caused long-term damage to itself, it's working class people and to any other country it has been involved with.

Wars, pollution, poverty, disease, deaths, long-term repression, environmental damage, economic damage, exploitation of natural resources (of all kinds).

Most Western countries have also paid hundreds of billions support many of the other countries exploited by them or in difficult circumstances- it's called Overseas Aid. The EU pays billions additionally every year suppirted poorer EU countries. Eurpean countries and the US paid to re-build Europe after both World Wars, as we do after every terrible war event- as we will in Gaza when this war ends. We have already paid billions to Commonwealth countries to support them in many different ways.

Much of that money has been wasted by some countries, siphoned off into bribes and arms and not used to help people, build infrastructure.

You sound very uninformed.

Im extremely informed thanks.

Note that I didn't use any insult againt you?

I have manners. Some people on here could learn some

VioletCrawleyForever · 26/10/2024 18:36

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 16:40

Yes that has been said a million times already.

And I have answered a million times, it doesn't mean that the individual person will pay more tax.

It just means that the government would change their budget and take existing tax money from somewhere, and put it towards reparations.

What shall we cut?

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 18:38

Unrulyrabbit · 26/10/2024 17:02

Not 'people', no...

I see you didn't reply when you were asked why you were insulting people on this thread.

And yes you have thrown insults at more than one poster.

Where does your severe aggression come from?

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 18:38

VioletCrawleyForever · 26/10/2024 18:36

Already answered twice. I won't answer the same question more than twice.

I didn't use any insult against you. I stated you seem uninformed. You do. You make statements as if they are facts and then, despite being asked for specific examples, can not provide them. You make suggestions about things which should happen which have already been taking place for many decades.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 26/10/2024 18:46

@Danajune11 I'm still waiting for you to give me a bit more detail about the specific harms that individual countries have suffered, and how those harms impact on their current living residents. Two or three examples should do.

I dont take demands from people. I told you to Google it yourself. You're an adult. You're well able to do it

Answer me this, why are the commonwealth leaders seeking reparations from the UK?

Two or three examples will suffice. Thanks.

You don't know, do you? You've picked up on some general fashionable sentiment but you're completely lacking in the actual historical knowledge to provide a coherent argument.
