If the UK is made to pay reparations where will that leave other nations who were or indeed still are involved in slavery?

The government would take the existing tax collected money, and allocate it differently. Eg a certain amount would be put towards reparations each year.

They wouldn't charge individual people more tax

I’m actually not personally against reparations.

But, to make reparations, the government would have to do one of three things: increase tax rates, cut public spending, or increase borrowing. Reparations at a level which would actually make a difference would impact on (most) individual Britons.

VioletCrawleyForever · 26/10/2024 16:37

@Danajune11

No one has once said that the individual people in the UK have to do anything. It's the UK government that need to apologise for past actions (and give some reparation if they wanted to).

The only money the Government has is that which comes from the individual people in the UK via taxation.

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 16:07

In that scenario: It's up to the Government to look at the budget and decide.

As I said previously, it's not likely that the UK will pay reparations, but they wil have to give an answer on the topic.

Only the UK? Are people really so thick about colonialism?

Still waiting for the answer aren't we.

I'm still waiting for your answer.

I see you totally ignored the post that asked you why you called people on here:

A child
Low IQ
Thick
Stupid
Have less intelligence than a goldfish
Can't read.

Who do you think you are? I haven't seen a bully as big as you in a long time. Your behavior is unusual

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 16:39

JudgeJ · 26/10/2024 16:38

Only the UK? Are people really so thick about colonialism?

Are you OK?

We are talking about the commonwealth seeking reparations specifically from the UK.

Have you been following the news?

Do people still really use the word "thick"

It's slang for stupid.

I never hear anyone use it in real life

You really can't make some people understand government finance, it's quite pathetic!

Yes that has been said a million times already.

And I have answered a million times, it doesn't mean that the individual person will pay more tax.

It just means that the government would change their budget and take existing tax money from somewhere, and put it towards reparations.

NewGreenDuck · 26/10/2024 16:41

Please could someone answer this.
Where do people think that the government get their money?
Do they think there is some magic tree which just drops money into the coffers?
I'm struggling with understanding what they think.

caringcarer · 24/10/2024 19:57

What people did hundreds of years ago may be wrong by today's standards but it's not as if we could pay the original people who were wronged. They are long dead. Best to apologise on our predecessors behalf and draw a line under it.

Couldn't agree more. We are not responsible for what they did then.

Yes lovey, I' fine thanks for caring! I don't take a simplistic view of anything, sorry!

You didn't read a word that I said did you.

Some extremely aggressive people on here. They don't even read a post, and they just jump in and insult someone.

I've never seen the likes of it!

So You agree that calling someone thick is not needed at all?

Why be so nasty?

NewGreenDuck · 26/10/2024 16:43

If the government pays for 1 thing, runs out of money and doesn't increase taxation then other services will suffer. You might be happy with that, but I would suggest that about 99.99% of the population won't be happy to lose services.

I think everyone on this thread, and in the whole country understands that income tax goes to the government.

Posts are odd at this stage.

It's obvious the UK will never pay reparations anyway

Look at the attitude on here. It would be like getting blood from a stone.

Thank goodness

violentovulation · 24/10/2024 19:27

I hope the UK does have to pay them. It's only fair.

Rubbish.

IKEAJesus · 26/10/2024 16:34

If I’ve missed it then I apologise, but all I can find from you is saying that the government will decide,

@Danajune11 you’ve said it’s up to gov to decide but not where you’d like to see them take it from?

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 16:47

JudgeJ · 26/10/2024 16:38

Let me point out how you don't make any sense.

We are all posting on a thread about the news topic, where the Commonwealth leaders specifically want a reparation from the UK.

You come on say "only the UK? Are people so thick about colonialism"?

Eh no. We are talking about the UK on this thread, because people want reparations From the UK .

No one said that only the UK had colonies.

some People on here!

@Danajune11 you’ve said it’s up to gov to decide but not where you’d like to see them take it from?

Thats my Answer.

I don't have any specific area that I want them to take it from.

I said it's up to the Governement to look at the budget and decide where they can take it from

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 16:49

It is a bit sad that there isn't much empathy for other countries on this thread.

NoisyDenimShaker · 26/10/2024 16:50

People are saying that the UK has to give an answer. It already has - Starmer has said that Britain does not pay reparations.

I don't see why we should have to apologise for the actions of the dead. It's them who did it, not us.

Are you serious?

Are you being sarcastic?

I'm sure you know that everyone knows that the government are funded by tax.

It is going to impact people via health or education or other so I assume that’s what you are after?
