BTW this is not a boasting post. I know more kids will read much more, I'm just asking out of curiosity as I would like her reading more now that winter is coming in.

Well 13 year old DS reads for approximately 0 hours a day for pleasure. He occasionally does 5-10 minutes when forced. I would be very happy with one hour a day and don't think you need to pressure her to increase how long she reads for.

I don’t understand your question.

FoldedClothes · 24/10/2024 17:02

‘An hour at’? I’m not sure what you’re asking.

BarkLife · 24/10/2024 17:02

YABU to talk about reading as if it's just for girls. My nearly 12 year old DS reads for at least an hour every day, too.

I don’t understand your question.

My question was is an hour a day the norm for a 12 year old to read for pleasure.

My teenage GS has never read for pleasure, had to be bribed to even open his GCSE books. My teenage GD loves reading and would curl up with a book all day given half the chance. Kids are all different.

MumChp · 24/10/2024 17:04

Our 11 yo reads around 10-15 hours a week.

Babadook76 · 24/10/2024 17:04

You word it like you think it’s a lot and want people to know youre ‘not boasting’. And then go on to say you think it should be more?

Cheezepizza · 24/10/2024 17:04

You are absolutely correct, I edited my opening post.

So what’s the bit about winter about?

Thommasina · 24/10/2024 17:05

When dc3 was 12 she read zero hours a day.

I would like her reading more now that it's nearly winter.

Not the norm!

DitzyDerbyBabe86 · 24/10/2024 17:05

My 13 year old will read how to cook a pizza, off the back of a pizza box.
Thats about it.

Thats because it isnt really a question. It is a humble brag.

isodontknow · 24/10/2024 17:06

DD12 also reads about an hour a day. Usually when she's supposed to be getting ready for bed 😡

Just let her read what she wants, when she wants.

I don't think it's a lot which is why I asked, I think it's an average amount of time.

The key here is ‘for pleasure’. If she enjoys it she can choose to read more. But everyone is different and trying to get her to read for longer may make it a chore rather than something she does for pleasure.
What are you hoping to achieve?

Why?

Comedycook · 24/10/2024 17:07

My dd14 reads every day for ages... easily an hour especially at weekends. I know a lot of her friends are similar and they talk about books a lot. I think it's a lot more common for girls to read especially fiction books. I have a teen ds who never reads fiction...very occasionally a non fiction book on a topic that interests him.

Moier · 24/10/2024 17:08

My 10 year old Grandson reads about half hour before sleep every night. Mostly factual books on his interests.. . Planes / countries/ wonders of the world etc.

Whothefuckdoesthat · 24/10/2024 17:09

You want her to read more than an hour a day for pleasure? Are you trying to turn it into a chore and take all the pleasure out of it for her? If you want her to read more, then stop speculating about what other kids are doing, and make it easy for her. Find books you think she’d enjoy and leave her in peace.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 24/10/2024 17:10

If you mean an hour a day, I think it’s more than average. But I don’t think it’s unusual. Of my 3, DD1 used to draw (and still does) more than read and would do so much more than an hour a day, DD2 read about an hour or so a day and DS who is 13 reads for precisely 0 hours a day for pleasure. He is dyslexic and I suspect will never actually read for pleasure, though his reading is properly functional now after lots of effort on his part. His activities on dark nights are Lego, guitar and gaming. I don’t think you need to encourage DD to read more particularly. Just ensure she has plenty of reading material available. And access to other hobbies too.

Brickiscool · 24/10/2024 17:11

Way above average. My book worm preteen has turned in to a non reading teen
