Sun lounger wankers

We're at a beautiful five star Canaries hotel for the second October half term in a row. It's pretty perfect for our family.

Never had a problem with sun loungers before - people have always pottered down after a leisurely breakfast from 10am onwards.

Until a couple of days ago, when big families began reserving six or so prime sunbeds in a row first thing and then not using them until after midday - when maybe two people out of six come down to the pool. It's nearly midday and I'm looking at a front row of empty sunbeds and people wandering around with towels unable to find any!

DP is fuming and wants to take pics and complain to the manager. I'm thinking of posting pics and a review on TripAdvisor - it feels a bit mean as the hotel is perfect in every other way and the staff so lovely but surely it's their job to police these wankers? AIBU?

Just sit on them 🤷‍♀️

Stormyweatheroutthere · 24/10/2024 11:45

Just move their stuff off. Not like you will sit and crush Mr and Mrs Invisible...

problembottom · 24/10/2024 11:45

We have loungers as DD, 5, is an early bird. But not seen anyone move towels and I understand this - not everyone wants a row on holiday! I think it's the hotel's responsibility?

Just move their towels and use the sun beds. It’s what I did this summer under similar circumstances. Only once did someone say that I was on their bed, at which point I feigned confusion and said it couldn’t possibly be because I’d been there for three hours and nobody on this earth could possibly think I’d be sitting on the floor while they saved a bed they weren’t using.

movingonok · 24/10/2024 11:47

Get management to move them off

The towels I mean, not the invisible people

saveforthat · 24/10/2024 11:48

I was expecting something else when I opened this thread! I always move stuff from loungers if noone is obviously in the pool etc.

SummaLuvin · 24/10/2024 11:50

I would either move the towels all to one lounger and use the others. Or speak to management in the first instance. I think posting on TA feels a bit unfair when you haven't given them the chance to deal with your complaint first (though they should be more on the ball).

Oreosareawful · 24/10/2024 11:51

Just move the towels.
If someone questions you, you simply state there was no towel here when you came down.
If you feel like putting the cat among the pigeons- place the towels in the pool for extra amusement and a solid finger to the cheeky fuckers.

AmandaHoldensLips · 24/10/2024 11:52

I don't put up with this any more. If I want to use a lounger then I just use it. I don't care what's been left on it. I've paid to be in the hotel, whereas a towel and a paperback has not.

Most hotels have a sign up somewhere - usually very small - about not reserving loungers and things being removed after 20 minutes or whatever.

I am old enough to not give any fucks.

Sirzy · 24/10/2024 11:53

If you have sunbeds then don’t worry. Let those who can’t find out to figure it out and talk to staff.

don’t let it impact your holiday when your not impacted

BananaSplitSandwich · 24/10/2024 11:54

I always just move the towels (unless they’ve just gone to the pool for a quick swim) I’m not letting a towel get a suntan whilst I sit on a wall or stand around. I’ve paid to be there so I’ll use the facilities thanks very much. One time, I’d been on a sunbed for TWO hours when an irate Spanish women started screaming at me that I had to move from ‘her’ sunbed. I just refused whilst she gave me daggers 🤷‍♀️

ThianWinter · 24/10/2024 12:02

The last resort we stayed at had a militant sun lounger manager. Anyone away from their lounger for longer than 30 minutes (apart from lunchtime) had their towels removed.

Exactly the same issue, it's not in Playa Blanca is it?

Fluufer · 24/10/2024 12:13

Of course you can complain and leave a review. If they don't want complaints and bad reviews they should be managing it better.
You can also just move the stuff. If anyone queries just feign ignorance. Wasn't me.

mitogoshigg · 24/10/2024 12:15

I would have a word with the management, state that it's unacceptable and that the pool attendants should be moving towels after 30-60 mins unattended!

MooPeng · 24/10/2024 12:16

I think it’s mean to leave a negative review without first giving the hotel a chance to rectify it. Speak to the manager

If you have loungers who cares? Don't waste holiday chill time getting worked up about this if it doesn't directly affect you.

It's a long time since I've done a sun holiday that actually involved lounging and not following a small child around a splash park, but in a five star hotel I'd expect there to be enough loungers that I could claim mine for the day and then come and go as I please.

This happened when I was in Majorca this summer.
When you checked in, you were allocated a swimming towel & told that you couldn't reserve sun beds.
If you did then it was removed & you had to go to reception to retrieve it & they would remind you that you couldn't reserve seats.
Brilliant!!!!

Skyrainlight · 24/10/2024 12:41

Complain first and if they don't do anything about it then it's fair enough to leave a review. It's not fair to leave a review without giving them the option of fixing the problem.

TeenLifeMum · 24/10/2024 12:44

When we stayed in Gran Canaria in the summer they left a card on the bed and if the staff found it still there an hour later, unmoved, they would remove the towels. It was great, they were so strict about it. In fuerteventura they clipped coloured pegs on with the with written on them.

Stormyweatheroutthere · 24/10/2024 12:46

No country I know of uses towels as currency. So move their stuff.. They have no hold over the lounger....

MissyB1 · 24/10/2024 12:49

Go to reception and make a complaint, ask for the manager, be polite! Ask the manager how the hotel could manage this.

problembottom · 24/10/2024 14:03

People saying I have loungers so what's the problem, you are right of course. I've been telling myself this but DP who is a bit of a grumpy old man has been in my ear about it for two days!

Anyway I don't know if this hotel (it's in Tenerife) has been reading my post but today the pool boys have been removing towels. Seems like it's the busiest day so far.

They've just removed towels from the prime row of six beds for three separate couples, just waiting for the wanker family to come down now and look for their towels Grin

Sadly the other family of six came down to find their beds waiting at midday. DP is planning to nick their spot in the morning just to piss them off. Will hold off the review for now and order a pina colada, I promise I'm not letting it ruin my holiday!

And sorry for the person who thought it was actually about wanking and was disappointed lol

I'm thinking of posting pics and a review on TripAdvisor orrrrrr you could just tell a member of staff that’s there right now!
