To think that joggers should stop and look

before running out from behind a builders' van straight in front of my car, causing me to slam on the breaks and nearly have a heart attack?

Thank goodness I didn't have any passengers. I am still quaking because it was a near miss.

Silly women had the nerve to gare at me. They were very lucky I was well within the speed limit or they would have been squashed flat.

GLARE - not gare.

Was she wearing an ipod? They are lethal when they have those on! Cyclists too.

TBH I didn't notice whether they were wearing ipods - (too busy hyperventilating), but I guess it's a possibility. They just appeared right in front of the car.

What on earth is the point in going out jogging to keep fit if you end up getting run over?

yeah joggers and cyclists are such menaces to other road users - they cause such mayhem and cause so many deaths and serious injuries to poor car/van/Chelsea tractor types.

Well Pan, that particular jogger nearly did cause her own death!

oh I think it IS the point. I wear your invisibility cloak everytime I "enjoy" my biking to work, 3 sometimes 4 times per week if lucky. I won't detail the absurdly stupid and regular antics of wankers in vehicles who either "didn't see you there mate" [believe I am VERY visible], or deliberately go out of their way to make life difficult for cyclists.

of course it isn't ok to behave wrongly on the road, but I DO suspect the really serious stuff, like 4,000 deaths (approx) many of them cyclists are atthe door of the innocent motorist.

not nice to be shocked in this way, but put it in perspective eh??

PaninoPan · 24/04/2008 18:48

so YANBU - joggers should stop and look.

but also car drivers (and I am one of those as well) should engage both brain and eye when on the road, and NOT be tosserwhallahers.

Ooooooh.

Pan, I live in a city full of cyclists and I can honestly say that there are 80% wankers 20% safe cyclists.
Not stopping at traffic lights, going across pedestrian crossings cycling 3 abreast and chatting, swerving in and out of cars in a traffic jam.
DH cycles to work alot, he is sometimes treated badly by car/van drivers but he is the first to admit that some of his fellow cyclists should not be allowed on the road

PaninoPan · 24/04/2008 18:53

ll - I was referring to the OP - I could rehearse an incident every time I go out on my bike. I cycle about 8 miles return. Just about every trip involves some kind of occassion when I have to think on behalf of some tosser.
and don't give me your thing.

jingleyjen · 24/04/2008 18:54

just to add on and off pavements as they choose, so not only pissing me off as a motorist but also once I am out of the car with 2 small children.

jingley - no doubt at all - we aren't all angels, but the power dynamic is sooo weighted that it does require a bit of perspective-taking. Thoughtless riding isn't likely to kill someone. Wankerish driving may well.

PaninoPan · 24/04/2008 18:57

thank you, ll.

I was putting the "put it in perspective" to the OP, whilst also quoting your cloaky thing. Sorry for the confusion.

CaptainUnderpants · 24/04/2008 18:58

YANBU - A similar thing happened to me , unfortunatly I knocked the person down - idenpendant witness and police said I wasn't to blame for accident - but because I couldn't claim off the pedistrian it was shown as a fault claim on my insurance.

It was pouring with rain the pedistrain had her unbrella up didn;t look and stepped straight inot the road . There was a pelican crossing 50 yrds away !

I baggered my insurance compnay to take her to civil court so I could claim my excess off her but they didn't have the bottle to carry it through and I didn't have the money to pursue it myself.

I was and still am very about it !

jingleyjen · 24/04/2008 18:59

well it is likely to kill someone... the cyclist.. a lady was in our local news recently going to prison for killing a cyclist whilst driving using her mobile phone, horrific, however, the judge did point out that if the cyclist hadn't gone through a red light the accident wouldn't have occured.

PaninoPan · 24/04/2008 19:01

the way I go is up Mottram Moor which is where the Snake Pass and Woodhead PAss trans-pennine routes descend on Glossop. The real dangers from cars and lorries has made me re-route recently that puts another 2-3 miles on my trip. But that's ok as it helps in fitness etc, and it's more of a pleasure.
I do think the larger picture should be seen, and don't condone sloppy biking. Esp. as dd is 8 and I'm contemplating on how I introduce her in the comning period to cycling her bike on (small, quite) roads.

foxinsocks · 24/04/2008 19:19

I think they should let cyclists through the reds when it's green for pedestrians (iyswim). Loads of lights in London now have a green walking person + a green cycle light. I think that's quite sensible.

Would stop the fiasco which we have in central London where you have to wait for all the farking bikes to go straight on before you can turn left at the lights (if you are at the front).

I cycle and drive in equal measure and Pan, I tell you what, there are some eejit cyclists out there (worst offenders are the motorbikes I reckon - the way they overtake huge lines of traffic and only just miss the oncoming traffic, makes me want to close my eyes).

(ps bad penalty miss - ronaldo/rooney not themselves, still, I think you'll be happy going back to OT with a 0-0?)
