To be unsurprised at todays's Charity Watchdog finding, Trans charity Mermaids was mismanaged and gave dangerous advice to desperate children who deserved better

tl;dr - the whole thing was a disaster, giving out dangerous outdated advice that would literally physically hurt children, including breast binding and irreversible puberty blockers

Gender questioning children deserve far better, evidence based, holistic support and care to help them through these difficult periods in their lives. Mermaids did not give it.

Poor governance at Mermaids amounted to mismanagement, inquiry reveals

In a report published today (Thursday 24 October 2024), the Charity Commission concludes that over several years, trans youth charity Mermaids was not governed to the standards it expects.

If anyone can believe it, Trans Reddit reckons the BBC are all TERFS - https://www.reddit.com/r/transgenderUK/comments/1gazknq/bbc_news_writes_article_in_a_biased_way_about/

I shouldn't be surprised but I fail to understand how anyone, given the facts of the situation, still stands by them. Then I remember how, when JKR wrote her essay, so many trans "influencers" basically said "don't read the original source material, it will be too triggering for you, read my biased version that's full of logical fallacies, poorly-attempted critical thinking, and outright lies, instead."

Sadly, lately there has been far too many, ie more than zero, charities / organisations that are focused on children, many who need significant support that these organisations should be giving, who have been found to have employed male people charged with child sex abuse.

The fact that Mermaids had a trustee that was a paedophile supporter plus a digital engagement officer who posted pornographic imagery of themselves on social media is not a stand alone incident. Look at the way that Girl Guides handled the male fetishist who also posted images of themselves in their bondage gear, with sexual messages on Facebook - even with a profile pic of themselves in a bath that collaged infront of a long image of little girls in ballerina outfits. Girl Guides sent the police around to one woman who complained. I don't think any of us received acknowledgment of our complaints.

Somehow, these organisations are ignoring what is right there in front of them. Self published on social media!

Mermaids confessed that they did not do some of the internet checks that they had listed as their process. They said they 'missed' this man's publicly visible connection and relied instead that he was working for LSE.

There is a significant issue with some of these groups. No person should be excluded from due diligence in checks, and that includes for safeguarding processes. Yet, there they are... in plain sight.

Nocomposer is livid (it’s not me, I’m too
cowardly and a female).

I note Reddit’s banned him but let his irony stand. He’s a man but not a men’s rights activist. The MRA aren’t keen on
him.

Shame on us all for free speech promoting human rights, eh.

Getting banned from there is a badge of honour and also very easy to get around.

if you want a good laugh at the knots they will tie themselves into, comment something g like:

”I know that our rights are really important and it’s just transphobia trying to get us down but I’m feeling really bad not having a come back when people say women should have their own toilets. Can you give me something to say?”

then increasingly use GC arguments back at thwm

We are disappointed with the review. Particularly this

"However, the investigation found that the charity, Mermaids, had appropriate safeguarding policies in place and there was no evidence that it provided medical advice to children, which would have been outside its remit.”

They had two years to find the evidence that has been in the public domain for years. Not to mention the complaints the CC have had from parents and professionals.

It's a total cop out and highlights the need for a public inquiry into the deliberate and systematic dismantling of safeguarding.

I’m trying to think of an equivalent - a charity not overseen by normal medical guidelines (NICE etc.) who are able to prescribe what I’d called controlled drugs to children/anyone.

Is there one? cos that in itself seems mental regardless whether its to do with trans or not.

Its like CRUK deciding to bypass clinical trials on new cancer drugs and prescribing to patients with rare diseases who may otherwise not have adequate treatment.

I Googled Susie Green and this came up. My goodness that woman is shocking and dangerous:

You can also start increasingly stupid articles such as

“if JKR have a peerage Susie Green SHOULD BE KNIGHTED”

Why are all the outlets so shtum suddenly about the exact name of the "former trustee"? Everyone knows who he was (and where he worked). There is a hell of a lot more to that story certainly, but his actual identity is not a secret - so why all the cloak and dagger business?

Safe Schools Alliance are right. The Charity Commission need investigating themselves.

Many other commentators are similarly disappointed - eg Jo Bartosch

”Mermaids does not deserve a ticking off: it deserves to be struck off the charitable register altogether.”

Trans charity Mermaids let off lightly by investigation

Child transition charity Mermaids will today be grateful for a very easy ride from the Charity Commission. A 22-page report, which took two years to complete, has found that “there has been mismanagement in the administration of the charity by the trus...

Great article from Jo, she gets it.
The people celebrating this as 'big' for us are seriously deluded.

Mermaids have got away with it.
