An article in yesterday's Times (share token below) with this title. I have thoughts both ways on this.

Labour is nervous to admit the attainment gap starts at home but without a focus on families, poor children will be failed

Gosh you’re cross! Were you never taught to manage your feelings?

Very much what I was thinking!

Making parenting classes mandatory would help. We don’t put people in cars and expect them to drive well, why would we expect people to take on the mammoth task of raising a tiny child to adulthood without guidance. It is ludicrous when you think about it.

We need to offer much more directed guidance, support, help and hands on instruction. I have no idea why we don’t. It would be a start.

Exactly. I had a colleague ask me advice on toilet training his child once. A perfectly normal man, caring dad, but he said, how long does it take, about 2 years?
People just need to know that these things are manageable and not scary and that’s there’s support available if you run into problems. Kind of what Sure Start used to do I suppose.

There is no fund to make guidance/support available for people who want and need guidance never mind making it mandatory for all, including people who don’t need. My son was diagnosed as autistic and we were discharged on diagnosis with a few leaflets and have had to muddle through mainly with support by asking other parents but there is no state led support

Yy to sure start I was able to quickly access speech and language therapy for dd when she was really young it was enormously helpful.

Re breaking poor white parents literacy we need to use many approaches to reading and writing and numeracy. No one size fits all and what helps one is an actual barrie to another

Intresting.

I notice it's something he said before he was elected so most likely irrelevant waffling, I'm not sure how this would even work with 30 kids and only one sink in the average classroom would they all line up to brush their teeth? Which would take up a whole hour or would they do it in the toilets?

They're sitting in the classroom with dry toothbrushes being shown how to use them - Kent

There is strong evidence to suggest nurture, especially in the earliest years is more of a factor in terms of intelligence than genetics and certainly genetics is not a factor in attainment.

I thought that as you get older your IQ starts trending towards nature. So in primary school you may be dazzling but by the end of A-levels you are closer to your natural potential.
