To think there are no talk shows with all-male hosts because men eventually run out of things to say to each other?

I’ve noticed that most popular talk shows seem to have women as hosts or a mix of men and women, but rarely do you see shows with just men talking. It got me wondering — is it because men eventually run out of things to say to each other? Or maybe it’s because male friendships tend to focus on doing things together rather than talking at length?

AIBU to think that men just don’t engage in the same kinds of long, chatty conversations as women, which might be why we don’t see many all-male talk shows? Or am I missing something here?

Have you never seen mock the week

Treesinthewind · 23/10/2024 18:56

I take it you haven't stumbled across the "men who think the whole world has been waiting with bated breath for them to make a podcast" genre?

Stretchedresources · 23/10/2024 18:57

Wogan?

FasterMichelin · 23/10/2024 18:57

I'm a woman and I'd be the shittest host, I can't talk mindlessly and have no idea how people do.

But yes, typically women are better at communicating for sure.

KeyKnowledge · 23/10/2024 18:57

God it's so awful isn't it. I mean.. they certainly do run out of things to say, but they don't let it stop them. (Unfortunately!)?

Screamingabdabz · 23/10/2024 18:58

Graham Norton?

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 23/10/2024 18:58

Like almost every talk show in the history of television until recently?

Running out of things to say doesn't necessarily stop people from talking.

Otherwise Loose Women would've gone off air years ago.

Singleandproud · 23/10/2024 19:04

The only show I can think of that is all women is Loose women and presumably their target audience is SAHM or those on maternity leave.
Most men don't have large swaths of time off during the day so male talks shows / panel shows are in the evening or on the radio instead

RhubarbBarBarber · 23/10/2024 21:34

For how many decades were Parkinson and Wogan on the air?

you haven't seen Balkan men sitting together on a table and arguing about politics, historic events and the like

Aposterhasnoname · 23/10/2024 21:38

Wut, have you never seen a sports programme? Try listening to talk sport radio (or don’t, it’s shit).

5475878237NC · 23/10/2024 21:38

Do you mean male hosts and male guests? All the big talk shows of our history and in the US such as Letterman had male hosts.

EffortlesslyInelegant · 23/10/2024 21:40

Another one 🙄

meganorks · 23/10/2024 21:43

Apart from Loose Women, I can't think of any shows like you are saying. And most men (and women to be fair) would rather stick pins in their eyes than watch that dross!

Most hosts I can think of off the top of my head are male - Jonathan Ross, Graham Norton, all the late night American ones. Of course they also have female guests - imagine the uproar if they didn't!

And as someone mentioned - there are loads of podcasts that are all male.

I agree. When it's scripted like Have I Got News For You or Mock The Week or 8 Out of 10 Cats or The Last Leg, they're fine, and quite funny.

But if it's impromptu and they have to ad lib, they're not very good. (A few are, but many women on TV are better at this.)

When it's all men on Loose Women, it's painfully tedious, dull, and boring.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 23/10/2024 21:45

I do have to say one thing though, apart from Claire Balding I HATE female sports commentators! runs.............! 🏃

Singleandproud · 23/10/2024 21:46

Most radio is ad libbed though and podcasts obviously have a theme but are generally speaking spontaneous.

If you watch a panel live either a comedy one or a professional one or comic con those that are practised at public speaking are great and those that aren't, well, aren't

HRTQueen · 23/10/2024 21:47

Tv, radio and podcasts are full of men just talking

how many tv shows do we have of women travelling yet there is a number of shows like this with men presenting

Loose Women is aimed at people with no brain cells. If the OP thinks that's an example of how women talking on a show is better than men, then she needs to think again. What a load of inane drivel that programme is. I'd far rather watch a programme with men than that crap.( I'm a woman by the way).

Singleandproud · 23/10/2024 22:22

@ISeriouslyDoubtIt I couldn't agree with you more. I suppose it replaces the likes of Trisha and Jeremy Kyle in that sort of timeslot so is a miniscule step up.
