Driving with one hand on the wheel?

PassingStranger · 21/10/2024 17:41

Somebody that I'm regularly a front seat passenger of drives with one hand on the wheel sometimes.

AIBU to keep mentioning it. They assume me all is fine and we haven't had an accident yet?

It makes me a little uncomfortable though.
They aren't doing anything else with the other hand, they just feel they don't always need both hands.
AiBU.

Few people I know do this, I always thought they was just showing off, but I actually think they just don't care!

WetBandits · 21/10/2024 17:44

I rarely have both hands on the wheel unless I’m doing a manoeuvre. If my passenger ‘kept mentioning it’, I’d suggest that they were free to drive themselves however they prefer 🤷🏼‍♀️

Topseyt123 · 21/10/2024 17:45

People who drive without both hands on the wheel are idiots.

WorthyRedBeaker · 21/10/2024 17:46

LOL

PiggieWig · 21/10/2024 17:47

Is this a thing?

Is this a thing?

Yep.

Maybe it depends if you learnt to drive a manual or automatic???
As long Á they're in control I don't see the problem.
I often drive resting my hand on the gear stick.

pictoosh · 21/10/2024 17:49

Do most people not drive with one hand on the wheel and the other resting on the gearstick?

Sirzy · 21/10/2024 17:50

I think if you don’t like someone’s driving then your best to not be a passenger in the car.

Someone constantly complaining about my driving would make me stop driving that person anywhere

pictoosh · 21/10/2024 17:50

I mean, I do...unless I need both hands.

babasaclover · 21/10/2024 17:50

You don't need moth hands on wheel. Not sure why you're so concerned. If it was that bad 1 armed people wouldn't be allowed to drive - but they are

pictoosh · 21/10/2024 17:51

If you kept mentioning that I didn't have both hands on the wheel, I'd tell you to stop it.

HateMyselfToo · 21/10/2024 17:51

Actually, if one hand isn't on the gear stick, its because I need it on the wheel while I hold my drink in the other hand

roseymoira · 21/10/2024 17:54

YABU

Get yourself there if it upsets you so much

GasPanic · 21/10/2024 17:54

It's stupid.

Because in the fraction of a second it takes to get both hands on the wheel to get better control, your car could have gone into a spin that you cannot recover from.

Watch any person that does it. What's the first thing they do when a car pulls out in front of them, or the situation becomes slightly more dangerous ? Yes. They immediately put both hands on the wheel. Because that gives you more control and better ability to hold the wheel steady.

What makes me laugh is one person I know is always going on about road safety and speeding but never maintains two hands on the wheel.

TwentyFiveAndCounting · 21/10/2024 17:56

One of the nice things about an automatic is that you can drive with both hands on the wheel all the time. I prefer it myself, as a driver.

DappledThings · 21/10/2024 17:57

Depends on the road. If I'm going up and down hills and round bends and changing speed and gear a lot I'll often have one hand just resting on the gear stick. Not on a road I'm doing a consistent speed.

Agreed. If you are not the driver and the car is under control then you have no business commenting at all, let alone repeatedly...

NewName24 · 21/10/2024 17:58

AIBU to keep mentioning it.

Yes.
If a 'regular passenger' (or, indeed, a one off passenger) I was being kind enough to drive somewhere, started criticising my driving, they would be walking or getting the bus after the first time I warned them.

Oh, and it is perfectly normal to drive with one hand on the steering wheel, once you've passed your test.

MotiRoller · 21/10/2024 17:59

Do you drive OP?

Kangarude · 21/10/2024 17:59

How ridiculous. There are many occasions when driving that you don’t need both hands on the wheel. How do people manage to change gear?

Iamacatslave · 21/10/2024 18:00

Dear God!

Because when you have passed your test you immediately become competent at controlling your car with one hand during blowouts or swerving round children that run into the road.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 21/10/2024 18:02

Ok this has to be the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard today.

indigovapour · 21/10/2024 18:03

Some studies have found that having a conversation with a passenger causes a similar level of distraction to talking on your mobile while driving. If you're that bothered about safety you should probably stfu and let them get on with driving.
