Labour planning to freeze tax thresholds longer

In the news today that they’re considering freezing the income tax thresholds past 2028. AIBU to think this is absolutely a tax rise for workers? I can’t believe they’d do this, they’ve been frozen for so long already.

It isn’t a Labour definition/justification. It’s the posters own view.
The poster was pointing out that some people can afford to not give a fuck about many of the messes the Tories have left.

No. What I’m saying is that taxes on salaries - PAYE - will likely be unaffected.
Which is what they said, though as pointed out previously the OBR have confirmed the Tories spent more than they said they had, so it might need to change a bit.

I’m really not a bot. Or even a member of the Labour Party these days. And whose fault is it if not the Tories?

Maybe if salary sacrifice schemes and pension contributions are involved these will increase the tax paid by very high earners.

I was under the impression that that sort of statement was against Talk Guidelines now.

Funny how it was ok for the old regulars to scream Tory bot though eh? It’s hilarious watching people squirm over the mess that is Labour. (Not a Tory voter). Can’t wait to see the comments when the welfare cuts hit. A bit of told you so on here I think!

"Your Labour mates"? Who would they be then? I think those calling other posters bots - of whichever party - have been recently and in my opinion rightly deleted.

lollylo · 19/10/2024 15:10

Might as well get done cash back after generous pay offers to jds and train drivers - many of whom will be in the higher tax brackets. It will impact me, but I think we are going to have to pay more tax. I’d rather this than other changes to be honest

Aaron95 · 19/10/2024 15:20

Why is this a surprise to anyone? The UK has become poorer compared to 10 years ago. There are several causes of this including Brexit, changes in the world economy and the aging UK population.

Any UK government either has to increase taxation or reduce public services. They suggest increasing tax on the wealthy people complain they will all leave the country. They suggest reducing services people complain about that. This suggestion is to tax everyone a bit more and still people complain.

I’ve criticised them myself elsewhere. The ‘hardcore’ here appears to be Tories who can’t admit their Party fucked the country royally.

Oh FFS, the old ' if you criticise Labour, you're a Tory' lazy thinking again. Now that really is tired now.

It's pretty lazy thinking to interpret "the hardcore" as "anyone who criticises".

’Yes. Tax rises if necessary. It's what I expected when I voted. However if they'd laid that out explicitly it would have affected their vote.

I mean this seems very Labour. It’s ok to hide information to get in

It’s quite fast for a reversal of narrative.

Maybe there will be backlash from others.

So did you expect total transparency from all the other parties? That's the third time I've asked you.

Absolutely this. Like business owners, sole traders, partnerships etc are not "working people".

Makes me so angry

It’s all speculation u til the budget comes out. Why do people continue to post these threads winding everybody up about something that has not happened and may not happen at all. Labour ‘considering’ this - says who?

This.

Do people not realise that the more you post about the media speculation (which is mostly right wing and hate Labour) the more it softens the blow for actually doing it as they think people are expecting it anyway, and therefore makes it more likely to actually become a reality.

Starting these threads is the worst thing you can do if it is something you don't actually want. Bloody stupid thing to do.

Aduvetday · 19/10/2024 16:35

Everyone already knows what’s in the budget. It’s already gone to the OBR. That’s why all these leaks are happening. The press is already doing the job of warning. A thread on MN will make no difference.

EasternStandard · 19/10/2024 16:39

Not really, and surely this should be levelled at the early doom ‘it will be painful’ press conference those weeks ago.

@Soukmyfalafel

Fescue · 19/10/2024 16:45

In November 2023 Rachel Reeves said:

"People on average earnings are paying more in tax because they have been dragged into higher tax brackets. That is a sign of failure. The (Tory) Government is picking the pockets of working people."

Two Tier Keir and Pickpocket Rachel then...?

Aduvetday · 19/10/2024 16:50

George Osborne literally said RR was a mini me. Yet people on here thought she’d be the one to stop those evil Tory welfare reforms. Yet it looks like those cuts and PIP reform as still going to happen in a similar form. People were scarily naive about this version of Labour. Workers will do ok because they won’t want to upset the unions. This will be their pain. However, it is a hypocritical stealth tax.

EasternStandard · 19/10/2024 17:02

ilovesooty · 19/10/2024 16:19

In terms of tax rises I do recall talk of tax rises actually, but not from Labour. That’s pretty low when it comes to hiding information from the electorate to get in.

I also remember huge backlash due to it. Did you think oh yes those rises sound about right?
