Older cats do sometimes become very noisy at night, unfortunately, for various reasons including cognitive decline, but also hyperthyroidism (which was the case for our old girl). There's an article about it here.

Our 12 year old neutered male had a bladder blockage in the winter - started with him weeing in the bath which was v unusual and after about a week we realised one evening that he couldn’t pee at all. We rushed him to hospital where he was catheterised and only just made it. Now he has special food to stop the crystals forming in his urine. They say this is « idiopathic » meaning there is no obvious physical reason, but it can be brought on by stress. Funnily enough he had been to the vet the week before for annual check up and boosters and the vet over-handled him a lot and stressed him out.

When he wees, check the amount, and if there’s any blood. Don’t tell him off. Put more litter trays down if you can, and more water bowls to try to get him to drink. If he shows any sign of struggling to wee, or produces only tiny amounts, get him to the vet.

Same thing happened a family members cat , surgery required and unfortunately even though he improved he lived a couple of weeks he sadly couldn't survive as his urethra was too narrow . The food is expensive but I'd do anything to keep my pet well

He's been twice in the last month because he had started weeing in the living room. Can't get him to stop no matter what I try.

Has the vets done bloods ? First starting point .

kidney Issues, or dementia .

No they haven't done bloods. They just said medically he is absolutely fine and the weeing is behavioural.

He's a senior. Time to take him to the vet for a check over.
He's been 2 weeks ago”

And he needs to go again, now.

coffeesaveslives · 17/10/2024 11:41

He hasn't had a very thorough vet check if nobody has done bloods or a urine sample to check for crystals. You should insist on both, possibly followed by a pain trial if both tests come back okay.

EatTheBastard · 17/10/2024 11:44

Video him crying at different times of the day today so you can show it to the vet when you take him..

People have different definitions of ' crying', so actual examples are really helpful

No this is nonsense.
my cat was unwell over a year first visit nothing wrong . Next visit nothing much mentioned
next visit needed dental I pushed for her to be looked at as she was very different .
she nearly died due to not eating. I pushed for the treatment I wanted.

next was a lump . Got that removed this can be from stress like an infection (dental) in her case.
i changed vets in between as first lot were terrible.
new vets …. bloods .
My cats is doing great now and was told nothing to worry about now as all her bloods are and have been perfect.

She also had bloods few years back . It’s the first thing to see any signs of illness and especially for kidneys.

I had a kitten who started peeing on himself where he lay he was putto sleep few days later. .
kidney failure.
Cats don’t tell you they are unwell untill it’s really bothering him.

The peeing could be behavioural but with his age and if nothing at home has changed to upset him.
Call the vets and ask for an appointment for full bloods to be done.
Go on your instinct . You know your own animal.

Definitely go back to the vets, it could be anything. My cat meows a lot at night when we've gone to bed but he's always done it. However, recently he came in crying (could tell the difference as it was a different sound and he seemed panicked plus was breathing fast). Rushed to vets who said he'd either inhaled a grass seed or been stung by a bee. He was fine, but you just don't know what he's feeling without getting proper advice.

iloveeverykindofcat · 17/10/2024 12:49

Quite often, what we think at first is behavioural turns out to be medical with animals.

I thought my senior lady was scared of my rambunctious new rescue, and I couldn't understand why, because the little one's body language was pure play, even including concillatory rolling on her back to show 'I'm only a silly kitten playing'. Then I got the senior lady on YuMove, a joint supplement. Her patience, tolerance, and their relationship improved dramatically, and quickly.

She wasn't afraid of the little one as such, she was afraid of being grabbed or pushed, because she has athritis. Can't believe I didn't think of it sooner.

ChampaignSupernova · 17/10/2024 12:50

Wee outside a litter tray is usually a sign something is wrong. Does he go properly in his litter tray or is he just doing small wees? Is he yowling whilst weeing? Has anything big changed recently? Cats can be very anxious so doesn't take much to give them cystitis

AnnaMagnani · 17/10/2024 12:55

What have you tried for the urinating? Cat is probably yelling due to pain from his bladder.

For my cat with intractable stress related bladder we do the following:
Plug ins - if not working try a different pheromone
Litter bins everywhere
Meloxicam for as long as the weeing is going on plus one week
Up fluid content of diet
Urinary supplement, we use Vetpro Urinary every day
Engage cat's brain- may be going outside, having different toys, interactive play but anything to move them off stressing about the imaginary threat

Jackson Galaxy has some great videos on managing this.

Pandasnacks · 17/10/2024 12:58

Cat needs to go back to the vet for blood tests to look for kidney issues, and possibly thyroid as that as the issue for a friend when her cat wouldn't stop meowing, blood tests showed he needed thyroid medication. Tell your vet what you want before you take him so you can minimise the risk of needing to go a 4th time

wwjalme · 17/10/2024 13:06

They can't say he's medically ok if they haven't done bloods.
I think you should take him back and insist on having bloods done.
Could be kidney issues.

Get bloods done. My elderly cat (11yrs) started crying for no apparent reason. She was an outside cat so hard to judge the reason, but when it turned into a kind of wail,I took her to the vets, they did a blood test - and she had quite advanced kidney failure. She had to be PTS sadly.

I’m not saying that’s what your cat has, but the vet said prolonged crying can be due to kidney problems causing pain and discomfort. Get blood tests done for kidney, liver, etc, but also for diabetes (because of the weeing on the carpet). Even if it’s none of those things, at least you’ll have ruled them out.

OneBadKitty · 17/10/2024 13:14

Has there been another cat prowling round outside- my Tom gets unsettled by this and it can last for weeks- he will wake in the night and check all the windows and yowl to go out and take to spraying indoors !

BlunderMifflin · 17/10/2024 13:14

Not read the full thread so apologies if I'm repeating other info.

My cat is a senior and started yowling and crying last year. Turns out it's a symptom of both deafness and hyperthyroidism, which can kill them if left untreated but is very easy to treat.

I'm afraid your cat needs a blood test.

WorriedMom24 · 17/10/2024 13:20

Could be Hyperthyroidism. The only sign I had from one of my cats was peeing in the house. It also makes them yowl.

Itsmahoneybaloney · 17/10/2024 14:34

Echoing the last 2 posters my 13 year old cat has just been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism (after a blood test - they do a specific geriatric blood test which picks up all the major things) his only symptoms were fatigue, a lot of weight loss and howling (but he did also howl when he was younger and had a UTI) it would definitely be worth taking him back to the vet for a blood test. I'm surprised the vet didn't do one 2 weeks ago when you took him.

TemporaryCatSlave · 17/10/2024 15:13

Did you know there is a specific Talk Topic called the Litter Tray for anything cat related? Lots of experienced people there with advice so do post there is you need to.

Though what you've already been told re possible reasons are all very goo. I'd go to a different vet as they can't say he's medically fine if they haven't tested anything. Sounds very poor help for a vet. Try to get a urine sample - you may need to hover over him with a clean plastic container ready to whip under him when he's about to wee.

I do but it was like 1am and I was very tired.
I'd never be able to get a wee sample from him, he's an extremely nervous cat, he would just run and hide under a bed.

Have you tried the crystals in the litter tray? Never failed us when we needed a sample. Hope your cat has calmed down today.

You don't need to do it yourself, you can buy special cat litter that doesn't absorb the urine so that you can get a sample that way. Our vets give it out for free but you can buy it online for a few pounds, or the vet can get a sample themselves with a needle and a syringe if needed.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 17/10/2024 17:50

I'd wait at least until tomorrow, to see how he progresses. I took my cat twice to the vet in the last week, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with him, apparently. Also elderly.
