He's been 2 weeks ago

So? He obviously needs to go again.
I was constantly at the vets with my senior dog, sometimes multiple times in a week.

If you ask a question you need to be open to the replies.

My cat yowls and runs around at night. It gets really bad if she had a UTI.
She's deaf and 18, apparently she's a bit discombobulated but not stressed. She's on gabopentin at night which does help.

nonevernotever · 17/10/2024 08:27

Ours is the same now and has been thoroughly checked by vet. She howls for food, a clean litter tray, treats and because she wants us to come and play with her on the stairs. You can work out watch one by where she stands when she yowls.....

Toottooot · 17/10/2024 08:32

Normal cat moaning noise or howling in pain - you’ll know the difference. Can your cat move ok?

soupfiend · 17/10/2024 08:34

What do you mean by crying, what is he doing at the time, following you around, just sitting there, walking round the walls of the room?

My cat had a stroke and did this while following the walls of the room.

What happens if you pick him up or stroke him?

Agree with others he needs to go to the vet again

Backfromhols · 17/10/2024 08:35

Can he pee ok? If not take him to the vet as an emergency, our male cat has been seriously ill twice due to bladder crystals and only still here because we acted so fast.

I think it's because he wants to drink from the toilet and I'd closed the lid to stop him doing this

They shouldn't drink from the toilet, only clean water in a bowl. I have a friend whose cat died after drinking water from the toilet; toilet cleaners are highly toxic.

In agreement with others, you need to visit the vet again.

If he's been in the last two weeks, what was it for?

He's been twice in the last month because he had started weeing in the living room. Can't get him to stop no matter what I try.

I know they shouldn't, that's why I closed the lid so he can't get to it. But he wants to so I wondered if that's why he was crying.

Yep, happily weeing on the carpet in the living room. And in his tray.

Diabetes

Is he drinking more than usual, is that why he wants to drink out the toilet

What tests did they do?

Doe he smell odd?

Open coat?

He gets very distressed going to the vets so obviously I will take him if he needs to go but I try and avoid it if I can, for him.

Sounds like he has a UTI I'd take him back to the vets for a blood test etc.

I've taken him for it twice in the last month and they said he is fine and its behavioural.

Can you get the vet to come out, I know that is more costly but less stressful

When he wees on the carpet (the house must smell as I had this, had to rip the carpet up), try to capture some of it if you can, very difficult I know. They need to do a dip test

BabyCloud · 17/10/2024 08:48

Our cat cried and was very needy. They died the next day and I think they knew what was coming 🥺

MotherOfCatBoy · 17/10/2024 08:48

Our 12 year old neutered male had a bladder blockage in the winter - started with him weeing in the bath which was v unusual and after about a week we realised one evening that he couldn’t pee at all. We rushed him to hospital where he was catheterised and only just made it. Now he has special food to stop the crystals forming in his urine. They say this is « idiopathic » meaning there is no obvious physical reason, but it can be brought on by stress. Funnily enough he had been to the vet the week before for annual check up and boosters and the vet over-handled him a lot and stressed him out.

When he wees, check the amount, and if there’s any blood. Don’t tell him off. Put more litter trays down if you can, and more water bowls to try to get him to drink. If he shows any sign of struggling to wee, or produces only tiny amounts, get him to the vet.

I’ve noticed my cats do this when they get older. My 15 yr old cat has just started yowling at night. She has lost a bit of her hearing and is crying out to make sure we are about for reassurance. Once she knows we are in bed, she settles. Previous cats have done the same.
Regarding the peeing on the carpet, would putting down a puppy pad help? I think there is something in them which attracts animals to pee on it. Yes it is unsightly and a pain to do but far better to pick up and bin rather than clean your carpet all the time.

iloveeverykindofcat · 17/10/2024 08:54

I agree with the people saying bladder/UTI. Male cat suddenly in pain that's my first thought, and if he's vocalising like that, he's more than likely in pain. Crystals don't immediately block the urethra, they grown gradually, but can be extremely painful. Please get him seen. 12 is not old-old for a cat, I would not be thinking dementia at that age.

coffeesaveslives · 17/10/2024 09:09

Your cat sounds very unwell - I know how it is to have a cat who's terrified of the vet but he really needs to be seen today.

We have the same thing happening re our old boy yowling in the middle of the night sometimes. He just needs to know that we haven't left him.

Conqueeftador · 17/10/2024 09:25

Our older male cat had this when he had bladder crystals. It’s more common in male cats. Apparently they start peeing in odd places because they associate the pain with their litter box (as it hurts when they pee). He was getting intermittent blockages as the crystals moved around. Sometimes he could pee, sometimes he couldn’t. Have the vets scanned or xrayed him?

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 17/10/2024 09:26

Have you tried the plug in things? I use one from amazon called itch that helps my two.
My late cat did night howling when she got older, the vet said it's common in old cats.
I have one now who has to see his vet often, it stresses him and me so I do sympathise. But he always feels better afterwards especially if he has cost me a fortune, I think he secretly enjoys the attention.
Weeing sounds behavioral as well, try the plug ins and I second the puppy pads.

Slushynana · 17/10/2024 09:35

My cat started peeing in odd places and other strange behaviour and it was a brain tumour, check his eyes and make sure his pupils dilate at the same time. I had put it down to old age at first and vet checked and said ok. Then one of his pupils blew and that was it. Steroids helped for quite a while though.

Thanks, I've got plug ins everywhere and have tried different types. I have puppy pads down.
