Al Pacino’s toddler

bridgetreilly · 15/10/2024 22:38

Apparently Roman texts him all the time. At 15 months old.

And it’s fun for Al to be a new dad. He’s 84.

Nobody seems to have considered whether it’s fun for the kid.

AIBU to think this attitude should have died out years ago?

The attitude that people have kids because they want them and not because they're in a position to be a good parent i.e. it's a selfish decision?

You're probably right, but if people did that the birth rate would absolutely plummet.

But maybe that's a good thing?

You could be on to something OP.

… but having children because we want them is something that is only really been around in Western society for the last 3-4 decades. For millennia having chilren was a biological consequence of consensual marital sex and rape. It was also a societal imperative because the more children you had, the more would likely survive benefitting your tribe/nation and sharing the load of responsibility in old age.

It’s a highly privileged, modern and Western idea that having babies is for the benefit of the child.

Bumcake · 15/10/2024 23:26

I wonder if he’s done a dna test. His ancient sperm is past its best surely?

What does the wonder kid text him about?

JMSA · 15/10/2024 22:55

I'm not sure if a texting toddler is something to boast about!

Clooney's kids can top that. They were bilingual from being toddlers.
Or so he claims.

Lots of kids are, my Turkish neighbours and my Pakistani friends both had bilingual toddlers.

Well exactly.

And the birth rate falls.

Whether that's good or bad is another conversation.

Loads of kids are bilingual, that's hardly a spurious claim!

OonaStubbs · 15/10/2024 23:32

It's not Al's fault, just when he thought he was out, she pulled him back in.

Farting · 15/10/2024 23:33

Well… there was a young woman involved, what about her part in this?

CaneToad · 15/10/2024 23:39

I'm with When Harry Met Sally on this -

S - And it's not the same for men. Charlie Chaplin had babies when he was 73.

H - Yes, but he was too old to pick them up

DrizzleMySwizzle · 15/10/2024 23:44

Julio Igliesias (81) has a 20 year old half sister who was conceived when their father, Julio Sr, was 90. Ain't that somethin'...

MabelMora · 15/10/2024 23:51

It's something all right.

Al Pacino looks about 30 years older than Robert de Niro even though there's not much between them.

pictoosh · 15/10/2024 23:52

Can't help but think this kid has a lot to look forward to in life. No financial worries and therefore many more opportunities to enjoy life and succeed than everyone else.
I don't feel sorry for him.

Firefly1987 · 16/10/2024 00:11

How long before people start saying he could live another 30 years and someone they knew died at 30 and left young kids behind 🙄

As for the "he's rich he'll be fine" I personally wouldn't have swapped my parents for all the money in the world but apparently some would if they think this kid is lucky! Some of the richest people are the most unhappy and messed up. I'll bet you wouldn't swap your kids for all the money in the world (I hope) so why think this child would be happy to lose his dad before he's 16 as long as he's rich?

Damn! Did not know that.

So Enrique has an Aunt that is 30 years younger than himself?

Contrastinggrassstates · 16/10/2024 01:28

itsmylife7 · 15/10/2024 22:58

I can't believe a man would be so selfish to want to do this to a child.

I can. Twat. Him, not you.

He’s talking about it being ‘fun’ being a parent.

He is not a parent. He is a sperm (and presumably money) donor.

Such an unbelievably selfish thing to do but at least his hands off, virtual approach to parenting means when he dies, his child won’t feel the loss of a significant attachment figure.

marmadukedoggo · 16/10/2024 06:16

I really used to respect him as an actor. Sad now.

I think 80% of kids I know have a better life than his kid will. They have engaged dads who love them, are a major part of their life (not some weird person they see on a screen) and won't be dead before they are adults.
Money does not make you have a good life. Surely you know this?!

Well, he could also have been born in a tent in Gaza or Lebanon under a barrage of Israeli bombs, so all in all he's pretty lucky.

NeedToChangeName · 16/10/2024 07:33

bridgetreilly · 15/10/2024 23:07

I think I meant more the attitude of the article that this is something to celebrate, because the dad thinks it’s fun. I would hope that we have moved to a more child-centred approach.

In the real world, everybody knows it's a terrible idea to father a child at that age. I doubt this article will persuade anyone otherwise

My niece was. Her mother only speaks to her in Spanish (always has) and her dad in English. So she was at the appropriate level for her age in each language.

It was amazing to watch her toddler-speak Spanish to her mum then turn around and interact with me in toddler English. She could clearly think independently in each language.

Translating between the two reliably took longer because she never really had the need to join the two languages together. But once she realised that the same object "has two names" it became her favourite game. I learnt so much Spanish in those months!

I think that would be 20% not included in the 80% surely?

You said 80% of kids you know. Why, do you know any Gazan or Lebanese kids being bombed by Israel?

Little Al junior is going to have a better life than them (if they even survive childhood that is), I won't be taking out my violin for him just yet!

cstaff · 16/10/2024 11:27

I don't have kids but how much vocab does a child have at 16 months. I would be more likely to believe that he can use a phone rather than know what to say / text on it - haha

floun · 16/10/2024 11:29

Al must be talking to an AI not a toddler
