Do you ever feel proper shame when…

Eating a maccy Ds. I was in Waterloo, a little tipsy, had the choice between an M&S feta crumb & lemon quinoa salad - or a quarter pounder with cheese/9 chicken nuggets/large fries/apple pie/Diet Coke combo…. guess which one I chose -

So I stood there with my brown bag of delight, throwing every morsel into my mouth with great pleasure yet immense shame - whilst all of the “others” with their tousled hair, cycled shorts, salads, wraps walked past in horror - their mouths turned up in disgust at my frenzied eating ways - proper eye contact and all

i should feel shameful

But it was so good - so I don’t give a sh&t

No, It would never occur to me to feel 'shame' about anything I eat. Why should I? It is nobody's business but mine. My decision.

Having said that, I'd have had a burger with salad and a drink of water. I think plastic cheese and dubious nuggets are a bit grim. But getting the snackies on the way home is completely understandable 🤗

I actually think you do feel shame and guilt for whatever reason. Hence this thread. Eat what you want. I doubt anyone is judging you in the busy station.

Aposterhasnoname · 16/10/2024 09:57

No one cares what you’re eating op. Even if you’re eating it with “great pleasure yet immense shame” while simultaneously not giving a shit. You are not the main character.

stopthepigeonstopthepigeon · 16/10/2024 09:58

I think McDonalds food is vile (in terms of taste) but I wouldn’t judge anyone for eating it feeding it to their toddler maybe

Lentilweaver · 16/10/2024 09:59

I ate 2 samosas yesterday at Whitechapel Tube. Should I feel immense shame? Definitely gave me great pleasure.

Lots of slim young people walking past, though none in cycling shorts. I venture to think they were probably worrying about getting jobs in this economy.

A Big Mac meal on its own probably had less calories than the salad. The extras are a bit much and I can eat and I'm rather partial to McDonald's.

“I can eat” but says anything more than a burger is a bit much?! Seems a bit contradictory! 😃

Thischangeseverything · 16/10/2024 10:01

No. On the rare occasion I eat at McDonald's I own my decision and enjoy it.

I prefer burger king though.

I'm going to be a total cow here - but an honest cow (if that helps).

I do judge people eating in the street and/or on public transport.
I do judge people eating McDonald.

I don't do either. But I am a judgy cow so judge me on that instead!

This would be my choice too!

McDonald’s is always cold and a bit grim, I will never understand why people go there when there are other choices, it’s service station food. It’s good for cheap hot drinks though.

tuvamoodyson · 16/10/2024 10:03

The choices seemed severely limited! Was that all that was left?

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 16/10/2024 10:07

And of course you were the only person eating in McDs amongst this sea of super fit judgy commuters. All of whom took time to give a shit about a perfectly normal mainstream meal choice.

At least you managed a word salad...

It was like reading a fan fiction version of Bridget Jones. Op has serious Main Character syndrome. Like anyone, ever has cared that someone is eating a McDonald’s. Unless the op was doing the age old ‘wolfed it down’ eating, but I thought that only applied to teenage boys eating the average mumsnetter’s Massive Salads™️.

Can I ask why? What effect does it have on you that you need to react with judgement? People need to eat, whether it’s a sandwich or a burger on the go makes little difference.

BobbyBiscuits · 16/10/2024 10:21

I remember once, the distinct shame I felt one night, last train home from South London, I was sitting on what I thought was empty carriage, brutally attacking a huge greasy doner kebab.
Some horrible looking bloke comes up behind me and just says loudly 'disgusting pig!' with full eye contact!
This was about 30 years ago and I still feel it now! 🤣

Why do you judge? Do you feel yourself superior to other people even though you know nothing about them or their lives?

Howmanysleepsnow · 15/10/2024 23:27

God yes! I skipped lunch at work today because I was too busy, then drove through the drive thru for a Philly cheese stack 5 minutes from home and parked up to eat it in secret so dh and the kids didn’t know!

Don't forget to bin the wrappers! Been caught out many a time by a slither of wrapper showing!

Crushed23 · 16/10/2024 11:17

I eat in public all the time. Not McDonalds as I don't really like it, but Pret swedish meatball wrap or Leon black bean rice box? Definitely.

fallenbranches · 16/10/2024 22:32

People pass hundreds of different people eating a McD's every day. I'm sure no one is looking at you in horror. I think this is more about your insecurity in how you feel about the choice. I have the occasional McD and couldn't care less who is watching me.

spicysugar · 16/10/2024 22:37

I dont care what you eat but a Maccy meal on the train stinks the place out so I might give you the side eye at the thought of you on my train.

the “others” with their tousled hair, cycled shorts, salads, wraps

Does humble brag cover this one? Totally unconvincing attempt (abandoned early) to pretend you feel inferior to people you hold in contempt.

I was a bit pissed when I wrote this last night - definitely didn’t think about it in as much detail as you are suggesting…. Actually I don’t even really understand what you’re saying when sober!

but ok sure

I love a McDonald's occasionally. I have a bacon double cheeseburger and chips and a McFlurry. Every single time I feel queasy afterwards and say never again.
This happens around once every month/6 weeks.
I don't feel shame!
