To think England is a bit boring?

Annalikesblue · 14/10/2024 12:44

I'm from England originally. I was working abroad for a long time.

I moved back recently to work, and for a family reason. I probably won't stay here forever. Maybe for two to three years max.

Do any of you think that England is a bit boring?

Every street, wherever you go,
has the exact same shops.

The Weather is bad. People are miserable. When you go to groups, people are so serious.

It just seems so dull and lifeless

Whereabouts in England are you staying? That would cloud your judgement if it's a grotty area and the weather is miserable!

There are of course nice parts of the UK.

But im just going to have a little moan about the bad parts.

I just find the sense of isolation tough aswell.

You know in mainland Europe, you feel so connected to a lot of other countries and you can just hop on a train anywhere.

The UK feels quite isolated.

Edited

Britain has excellent connections with Europe and the world. You can 'hop on' a plane and be in almost anywhere in Europe within two hours.

Your post sounds like one of those typical generalisations about 'Europe'. Many parts of Europe are very distant from other countries. If you are in the south of Spain or Italy for example, you may be able to 'hop on' a train but it will take a lot of time and money to get to another country.

In any case, it's a strange reason for saying that all of England is 'boring'.

I love England even though i no longer live there, i moved away nearly 10 years ago but i do visit at least every 2 months. Go back to the 90s and the first decade or so of the century and England was fantastic, the atmosphere was amazing , everyone was positive and the St Georges cross and the union flag were flown with pride. These days the English will not fly their flag, they are very negative about their country and hate anyone that is proud of the country.
Yes it is a miserable place at the moment but that is because the English make it so. Find some pride in your wonderful country and stop dragging it down.

We do fly our flag but we are made to feel we can't unlike the other home nations. Not sure how much you can say with accuracy about the country when you have been away ten years.

Well if you look at studies, a lot of other countries do have better weather than the UK.

'Studies' can't say what weather is subjectively 'better' though.

Yes, when you're having to turn the heating on in June or don't dare to leave the house without an umbrella in July, then British weather can seem miserable. But I know lots of immigrants who really like the weather here, because of the lack of extremes. Many countries are blisteringly hot in summer and freezing in winter. British weather may be a bit frustrating, but you rarely have to deal with extreme conditions.

coffeesaveslives · 14/10/2024 16:38

I don't find it miserable.

I'd go out for a nice meal somewhere, go to the cinema or the theatre, go for a walk to see the Christmas lights, have friends over for board games or a movie night, light the fire and just enjoy good food and good company.

I personally find misery attracts misery - if you go about thinking everything is shit, then well, it's no wonder you don't have a good time.

You have a point. There is loads of good stuff but your own viewpoint matters

I think I'd rather poke my eyes out than go to "craft groups" or yoga.
I prefer to go to music and the theatre, museums and art galleries. But each to their own.

I think OP prefers active pursuits rather than passive ones.

She doesn't seem to prefer anything. Hence the "boredom".

Seashellssanctuary · 14/10/2024 17:41

To label a whole country as boring seems very narrow minded

When there is clearly an abundance of fantastic things to do/ see/ experience then it comes down to the individual to how much they want to participate in

CarmelaBrunella · 14/10/2024 17:48

England isn't boring, the UK isn't boring. I think it sounds a bit like depression, OP - how about making an appointment with your GP, or could you afford private counselling?

Annalikesblue · 14/10/2024 17:50

Thanks for all the useful posts guys. I'm just catching up.

It just seems very grey and miserable lately.

To jokingly quote marilyn monroe

she said "it seemed to rain the whole time that i was in England , or maybe it was just me"!

Yes, maybe I just need more time to readjust.

I'm not depressed thanks.

You think it sounds like depression to say where you live is boring, and the weather is bad?

Everyone in my workplace must be depressed then, as they were all complaining this week in one way or another about England!

I can think of a few other words...

Clean water
Free
Mild weather
Free healthcare

Ok, I was just trying to help. I do think that not being able to find joy in life is probably a sign of depression.
How unusual that you're surrounded by people with a similar outlook. I think that's a bit sad.
Anyway, only trying to help.
Good luck.

GiddyRobin · 14/10/2024 17:58

I don't really know what's boring about it. In the past month, as a family we've been to the Lakes, various galleries and museums, two markets (one crafts and the other oddities), the seaside, forest walks. We've got a wide variety of different hobbies that gives us plenty of socialising, and no one is snooty. Upcoming will be the annual village Halloween celebrations. We might also travel down for a traditional folk festival based on Samhain. I'm also considering a weekend trip to York.

Sure, the weather has been a bit wet some days, but it's also had moments of lovely bright sun. We move to Norway in a couple of years, and while I cannot wait as I'm in love with the country, I'll miss England too.

Maybe you have SAD op? I feel very down at this time of year

Complaining is our national pastime - it doesn't mean people genuinely hate whatever it is they're moaning about.

YourLastNerve · 14/10/2024 18:00

Maybe you live in a shit bit?

There are beautiful bits, rugged bits, gorgeous beaches, picturesque lakes.

There's dance, opera, theatre widely available

There's world class sport to watch & play.

I genuinely love living in England. I love how green it is, the woodlands full of bluebells and wild garlic in spring, the village summer fetes, the cricket teas, cornish beaches, bonfire night, the covent garden buskers, the proms.

Boring people get bored.

Sorry OP but this.

I've travelled all over and lived in 2 other countries. The UK is fantastic.

Comedycook · 14/10/2024 18:03

There are indeed and to get to them all you have to do is remortgage so you can afford a train fare or you can drive and sit in traffic jams for hours in the rain.

HoppyFish · 14/10/2024 18:11

Yes it'll be depression. A few months in the lunatic asylum followed by some electroconvulsive therapy should cure you of this derangement.
