ie. they dont even know if she has it or not but I have been told to 'keep her off school and see gp' because some other children in the class have got it

ds1 has had it before and we just treated him and carried on as normal, its not going to kill them is it?

I am fuming and unreasonably foul today so I apologise in advance

In the schools I have worked at we have not been allowed to send a child home because of threadworm, or lice either for that matter. So no, I dont think you are being UR.

moondog · 23/04/2008 15:47

How fucking ridiculous.
I would estimate that 30-40% of kids have it anyway (as well as teachers.)

It's not an insult. just a way to prevent it spreading.

oiFoiF · 23/04/2008 15:49

You will never eliminate threadworm.
Anyway,it's harmless.

TheApprentice · 23/04/2008 15:52

also, you are never going to stop it spreading. Schools children's hygiene leaves a lot to be desired.....And so do the sanitary facilities in most schools IME.

Oliveoil · 23/04/2008 15:53

what is threadworm?

we have not had nits yet either

oiFoiF · 23/04/2008 15:55

oh oliveoil, please dont google! they are white thread worms that live in the intestine-can be seen in poo and around the bottom and at its worst causes an itchy bum

Martianbishop knows some very interesting things about threadworm. You should ask her.

Oliveoil · 23/04/2008 15:56

omg

and are these things quite common then, am I to expect a visit????!!

i just cant believe i have to take her to a GP, get her treated and treat us, maybe unnecessarily, before she goes back to school

If you dont want to go to the GP, I can recommend OVEX. However, a family pack is pricey. But theres just one table to chew (orange flavour I think) and I think it works better than Pripsen.

oiFoiF · 23/04/2008 15:58

kerrymum, there is nothing in the home school book about her scratching and as i say she only went back yesterday and i have seen no sign for the last 2 weeks. It just seems some other children have it so dd 'might' have it aswell - hence the 'suspected'

and the other worrying thing is she came home with her lunchbox untouched

OP posts:
2GIRLS · 23/04/2008 15:58

Are they telling every child in the class to stay at home?
Why on earth have they singled out your dd?

Does she wear a nappy? (Or was that a joke that I didn't get)

Well, if she does wear a nappy you'd be able to inspect her nappy and should be able to tell if she has threadworms.

But otherwise treat themwith tablets if they've got it, hoover thoroughly wash hands ect like I'm sure you do and send them to school!

oiFoiF · 23/04/2008 15:59

i used ovex last time when ds1 had it. Can you take it whilst breastfeeding? I imagine I am going to have to see the go before she gets sent back though as they always ask for proof. Its like being a child

OP posts:
TheApprentice · 23/04/2008 16:00

I wouldnt have thought she would be itching much at school as it tends to be evening and night when you itch as thats when they travel to lay eggs outside anus (SO sorry, TMI).

Am embarrased that I have this knowledge but such are the delights of being an infant teacher!

By the way I meant TABLET of course, not table!

oiFoiF · 23/04/2008 16:00

no she really wears a nappy, she is doubly incontinent (has sn)

OP posts:
2GIRLS · 23/04/2008 16:01

Pripsen is usually for the under 2's, so ovex or something containing mebendazole is best. You can get it over the counter.

Never heard of keeping them off school.

oiFoiF · 23/04/2008 16:01

oh we have been blessed with them before theapprentice but she has been fine at night (it takes her a while to go off) Plus I imagine after a fortnight at home ds1 would be moaning about his bum 'hurting' at night.....
