AIBU not to love holidays?

NotSoSunny · 12/10/2024 19:54

I’ve been on 4 this year and can’t say I’ve loved any of them. All different holidays: friends, partner and family holidays.

I find the prep, travel and pressure to have a good time a bit much.

AIBU, do people absolutely love their holidays?

I do love holidays but it’s absolutely ok that you don’t! Everyone is different. Just don’t go on them. Your bank balance and the planet will be happier for it.

I feel extra pressured to look really good on holiday as well . So in the lead up I've got to make sure I've had hair done, nails etc and got some nice stuff to wear, and lost a few pounds

Is anyone else like this ?

I am. I also take quite a lot of luggage because I like a choice of what to wear.

H once suggested we try going with only a carry on bag. The look I gave him shrivelled his balls.

They can be stressful, especially if the weather is bad or the place if different to what you expected. I love a long weekend away with my husband. Hate family holidays. Cost loads and generally I just want to go home half way through!

neverbeenskiing · 13/10/2024 09:29

I found holidays quite stressful when the DC (both ND) were little. Now they're a bit older I really enjoy them. I'm always happy to be home though.

phoenixrosehere · 13/10/2024 09:32

I love solo holidays. Holidays with the family are all right.

overindulged · 13/10/2024 09:46

Funny you should say that.

I'm on holiday abroad at the moment and I'm so ready to go home to my own bed, my tv and some Yorkshire tea.

I've always loved travelling and I've just recently realised I'm over it. Can't be arsed with airports and queues, get fed up of eating out constantly, don't like the pressure to "go out" every night for a week or more.

In contrast, a week in a lovely cottage by the sea with a log burner and Netflix really excites me 😂 I'm happy to be out walking in the fresh air every day, don't even mind if it's not sunny. Maybe our tastes and priorities just change.

cheezncrackers · 13/10/2024 09:59

I would say that I love travel, but I agree that the stress and hassle and also the relentless delays you get nowadays are ruining it. The actual getting there used to be an enjoyable part of the trip, but recently every single time we've travelled the flights or trains have been delayed and/or we've been diverted and landed somewhere completely different. Even short trips to Europe can take all day when you've driven to the airport, checked in 2 hours before, been delayed, flown to destination, picked up a hire car and then driven to the destination. We have three trips booked for the next year and I'm actually not looking forward to any of them, which is weird for me. Usually though, when we eventually get somewhere, I'm glad we went, and it's that I hold onto. For now!

ChristmasFluff · 13/10/2024 10:02

I loved holidays when I would go with my son - it felt worth it for the two of us. But going on my own is a lot of faff, and I find I can't be bothered. I travelled a lot in my teens and 20s, and just feel like I'm mostly done with it all.

I've moved to the sea - I can do day trips to other seaside towns, and there's nothing better than being able to finish work then spend the evening on the beach or walking in the mountains. Then get back into my own bed.

Dramatic · 13/10/2024 10:09

4 holidays in a year?! That seems like an awful lot. Maybe you'd be better going on one a year or one every 2 years?

I am terrified of flying so holidays are really quite stressful for me and not really worth it, we've been by ferry for the last couple of years and I can't even tell you how much it transformed the experience for me, the whole holiday was stress free and I felt so relaxed.

iloveshetlandponies · 13/10/2024 13:07

@silentassassin

lol at shrivelled his balls 😝 I'd be same !

AnnaMagnani · 13/10/2024 13:17

I love holidays but it took a while to get the formula right.

You don't do them that often and there is a lot of pressure for everyday to be amazing.

What worked for DH and I was at the end of each holiday, talk about what you liked and disliked about the holiday. Then when you book the next one, start dumping the stuff you didn't like and do more of what you did like.

After doing this for about 4 years we had nailed it.

A new bathroom won’t be the thing you look back on with pleasure in later years……

Oh I don’t know, given what a state mine is I think I probably would look back with pleasure if I could afford to fix / replace it!

CoffeeCantata · 13/10/2024 14:59

I know what you mean!

I've travelled abroad far less in recent years since it all became such a hassle and a bore. I remember years ago you basically just boarded the Eurostar almost like a normal train and off you went. Last time it was more like waiting to board a plane - and I can't be bothered with airports. So sad. I know why security checks etc have to be done, but it still puts me off. But then - perhaps we should all travel much less than we do??

Luckily, I'm very happy with UK holidays (which are NOT staycations, thank you very much!).

Also - I can't bear to be away from home for more than a week. I just can't focus on the holiday after that.

I know I'm out-of-step with modern life - you don't need to tell me I'm weird!! 😂

NotSoSunny · 12/10/2024 21:11

What do you love so much? I’d love to love them!

I love being somewhere new, exploring, seeing DC enjoying new places and relaxing. I even enjoy the travel. I've been on hundreds of flights probably, I still find airports exciting rather than stressful. I like the whole being part of a process getting through the different bits.

Fordian · 14/10/2024 11:25

I hate flying which doesn't help (tho in my 20/30s I gaily flew all sorts of dubious 3rd world airlines!). I hate the hassle of airports, the sitting around.

DH & I just came back from 5 days in Istanbul which was great, but from leaving the hotel to walking thru my front door near Southampton took 13 hours, for a 3 hour flight.

But I used to love our 2 week private villa with pool holidays, in Spain with the DSs, apart from the flight, but I only relaxed once I knew the villa actually existed!

girlfriend44 · 14/10/2024 11:30

No I love going away.....
Holidays are precious.

Is this a brag in disguise?

If you don't like going away make a donation use the money and make a donation for a family or child who never get away to have a break, I'm sure they will appreciate it.

Aposterhasnoname · 14/10/2024 11:38

There is literally nothing I love more than a holiday. The only thing I can imagine spoiling one would be serious illness but otherwise I can have crap hotels, shit food, poor weather, rude guests, you name it, and still have a fab time.

I am at a similar place, I did loads of backpacking around Europe / Australia / South America in my 20s, and it never felt like a holiday because you were at train stations / bus stations / airports every three/four days. Plus the innevitable sickness, language barrier and cheap hotels / hostels. Great experiences but I have no desire to do it again. DP and I are planning a Canadian / US trip but not for awhile as I need a break from long haul. I am happy to stick with beach holidays in Spain, Italy etc, laze about and do nothing.

TheLeadbetterLife · 14/10/2024 11:52

I love travelling, but not so much holidays. I love being on a plane or train, seeing the world go by, reading a mag or watching a film. The longer the journey the better.

I often find the holiday at the other end a bit of a let down. I sometimes prefer travelling for work than for holidays, maybe because there's a set goal to achieve with work trips. Visiting friends and family in other places is more enjoyable than a straightforward holiday too. Maybe I prefer it when I'm seeing a place through the eyes of people who live or work there? Haven't really thought about it.

Possibly all this is because my life isn't particularly stressful most of the time, and I live in a holiday destination anyway, so I don't have anything to escape from. When I'm away I just worry about the pet sitters, and get little sleep due to unfamiliar beds.

I love both the journey and the destination. Love flying, love trains and ferries, love going on long road trips with DH. And love cruises because they are the most stress free and leisurely way to travel.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 14/10/2024 11:58

I absolutely love them but I especially love going alone!

I have to say I like the idea of cruises. I love being on boats and ferries, and the idea of it being one long journey really appeals. What doesn't appeal is the thousands of other people. I think I would only like a smallish cruise, which I can't afford.

BabyCloud · 14/10/2024 12:04

I don’t like holidays, I like to be at home 😂

thestraw · 14/10/2024 12:37

All my holidays atm are family holidays. I love them, we always choose a new place or type of holiday which makes it interesting for me as I like visiting new places. It's hard work with young children but they know we always find something fun for them to do, everything is child-centred so they always look forward to whatever we have planned. We live close to a Eurostar terminal so getting to Europe is easy and quick.
