To think this is not appropriate in class?

Last week I did supply teaching in a Hindu faith school and heard another teacher shouting Jesus Christ at the year 4s as a reprimand for chatting. Now, firstly I am not religious and secondly I was told it was a non-shouting school so am I overthinking that using JC in anger is not really appropriate?

A non shouting school? Is that a thing?

MumChp · 12/10/2024 15:02

All teachers make mistakes. Carry on.

ahemfem · 12/10/2024 15:03

I'm not sure what the faith of the school has to do with it either. Please could you expand on why you feel this is important?

worrisomeasset · 12/10/2024 15:04

Another teacher here. I’m not religious either, but saying that as part of a reprimand is inappropriate. As for the shouting, I support the idea of no shouting in principle but that doesn’t mean I never ever raise my voice in class.

BCBird · 12/10/2024 15:05

I am.not religious at all. I don't allow this sort of comment in any of my classes. Not appropriate.

BiscuitlyBoyle · 12/10/2024 15:06

A non shouting Hindu faith school?
Did ye, aye?

BagavadGita · 12/10/2024 15:09

@ahemfem I mention the faith as Jesus Christ is not a Hindu religious figure so saying it may not be the same as in a Catholic school perhaps.

He can take it.

pikkumyy77 · 12/10/2024 15:10

Not all religions have the same prohibitions against using the name of (a) god as an exclamation or in vain. The shouting is more of a problem.

Dramatic · 12/10/2024 15:10

I couldn't get worked up about this.

BagavadGita · 12/10/2024 15:10

@BiscuitlyBoyle you doubt such a thing? 😂

Thank you for expanding. I still don't think it's the best thing to be shouting but I don't think it's a sackable offence

Canyonandon · 12/10/2024 15:12

Not worth the fuss

BagavadGita · 12/10/2024 15:23

This is why I love supply, and MN, as it challenges my ‘western centric lens’ as my BIL calls it 😂😂

There are only 5 Hindu faith schools in the U.K. The combination of one of those 5 schools being ‘non shouting’ with a policy so strong on that front that you need to mention it, and a member of staff shouting Jesus Christ seems a stretch.

KnittingKnewbie · 12/10/2024 15:43

What was happening? If a child was about to be seriously hurt (tripped into a table corner, putting chair on table which fell off etc) I might shout " oh Jesus Christ" in horror

I wouldn't shout "JC it's so noisy in here" though

BagavadGita · 12/10/2024 15:48

@BiscuitlyBoyle did you google? I know it sounds far fetched but it’s true. When you are informed it is a strict veggie school with a no shouting policy by your agency you bear that in mind. To be fair only heard one teacher shout.

Weirdly the only people I know who habitually say “Jesus Christ” are Irish Catholic. I was brought up Catholic and in my community “taking the lords name in vain” was frowned on (a teacher wouldn’t have) but not shocking or deeply offensive.
I would maybe mention it directly to the teacher as not a good idea (I did this to my Ds Spanish nursery nurse who said “god” a bit much for my liking) just a friendly “be aware this might offend” nudge.

pikkumyy77 · 12/10/2024 15:52

I use JC as an intensifier/colloquial expression of anger or alarm. Its quite conventional over here. Im not Christian, its just common usage here.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/10/2024 15:53

They shouldn't really be saying it but not BC it's a Hindu school. In fact it could be more offensive in a Catholic school? But either way shouting isn't great. But if I were you I'd pick your bottles. If that's the worst thing that happens there I'd not be bothered.

wwjalme · 12/10/2024 15:53

I think it's inappropriate to be shouting Jesus Christ in any school. It being a hindu school has nothing to do with it.
Aren't most schools "non-shouting" even if it isn't labelled as such?
In every school I have ever worked in we were constantly reminded not to shout at the children because it does nothing other than raise the general level of noise in the class and that we should use other behaviour management techniques instead.

Crazyeight · 12/10/2024 15:55

If it was "Jesus Christ you need to shut up you little shit bags" maybe you'd have a point.

Catza · 12/10/2024 15:55

If you are not religious, I am struggling to see why you find it inappropriate. And, in a context of a Hindu school it will be about the same as shouting "Chocolate Pancake!"

BagavadGita · 12/10/2024 16:02

@Catza exactly my point and why I started thread. Thank you 😂

This is majority Christian country, and it was probably a force of habit not a deliberate insensitivity. I’d get over it if I were you.
