To be sick of the piss poor phone signal across UK

I'm sick of it.

I'm in a place I've been to a million and one times. It's usually got amazing signal but this time I can barely get 3G! I was down in Cornwall the other month and despite having full 5G it wouldn't even send a text!

It's shocking, what am I even paying for with my phone contract at this point

I’m on the outskirts of Liverpool and the signal here is shocking. It’s 2024 and we shouldn’t have to be running around the house trying to find a good reception.

i didn’t realise so many others were affected. The general consensus here is that we’re not far from one tower blocks which affect the signal but I’m not sure how true that is.

rockstarshoes · 12/10/2024 22:12

And on holiday in Greece, on the beach listening to LBC on the Global Player App with my ear buds all good!

Using the same app at home in my office constantly buffering!

As you can probably tell I'm at the end of my tether with it! 🤣

I'm always banging on about this!

If the Govt want to grow the Economy they absolutely have to fix this!

I live in Bucks regularly travel in to London on the train for work & pleasure!

Half the journey there's no phone signal & half the time the train WIFI doesn't work! It's so frustrating!

And actually WIFI is another issue, 20 -21 both of us WFH full time the WIFI never faltered, I was so impressed!

Now 2024, I struggle to get a service in the kitchen, no chance in the garden & even in bed when I'm almost sat on top of the modem I can't watch an instagram reel!

That is something you need to fix yourself. We have a relay in our kitchen because the WiFi router in the front room can't send the signal through some solid walls, the full depth and width of our house.

Vodafone is good wherever I've been in U.K. and I travel a lot.

Trust me it's not. Within a mile of home, whether I drive south or north, I lose the signal every single f**king day since Vodafone switched off 3G a year ago. I'm semi-rural. Vodsfone customer service have had me jumping hoops, told me it's my phone, done overnight 'fixes' that do nothing and have replaced my sim. All to avoid admitting it's their fault.

trickortreat86 · 12/10/2024 22:16

I had to switch to 3 because Plusnet stopper being a thing, they used EE. Can't even get a signal in my town centre garden, 3 is terrible

cherrysonata · 12/10/2024 22:18

I don't understand why this lack of infrastructure isn't shouted about more. It's a national disgrace. Other countries are way more connected than we are. The media should be shouting about this.

Ozgirl75 · 13/10/2024 06:07

I remember when they were talking about getting rid of landlines and although most people have wifi, if anything happens to that, or if there’s a power cut, you’d be totally screwed.
Yet another thing that the U.K. is lagging behind on.

Mobile phone connectivity is national infrastructure, other countries have state funded this, the Tories left it to the free market, so it hasn't got done.

As the article previously linked too, the Huwai removal is an excuse as much of the older 3g/4g stuff was old anyway and needed replacing.

The WiFi issue should be solvable. The vast majority of Bucks has fast fibre available to it and you can readily improve your own home coverage with a mesh system.

I agree that Chiltern rail wifi is a mess and so is 4G/5G phone signal though!

'That is something you need to fix yourself. We have a relay in our kitchen because the WiFi router in the front room can't send the signal through some solid walls, the full depth and width of our house.'

I get this but it used to work, why doesn't it now? I've been using the Virgin connect App to test WI-FI speeds in each room, when it works all good yes down load speeds good!

When it dips & I try to test it to prove it doesn't work the bloody App tells me I need to be at home to test the home WI-FI 🙄 I am at home your WI-FI is shit!

I'm not just sat moaning about it, I am trying to fix it, I need to phone them but that fills me with absolute dread!

rainfallpurevividcat · 13/10/2024 11:19

I agree OP.

It's particularly awful in London.

I only occasionally get 5G anywhere.

Train wifi is shit.

It really feels that it ought to be so much more reliable by now, when so much we do is resting on it.

GladAllOver · 13/10/2024 11:25

I travel all over and never have any problem with EE. My phone has a second SIM, on O2. The coverage on O2 is awful by comparison, I feel sorry for anyone stuck with them.

Boredlass · 13/10/2024 11:35

I’m just outside Newcastle and 4G is the new 3G. It’s shit. I’m on EE

Edited

I abandoned EE several years ago because their coverage in the Northeast was so patchy. It was the best of a bad bunch in my old village and when i moved away, I saw no reason to keep it. Even the prices they charge didn't tempt me to stay.

OnlyOneNotOnWeightLossDrugsInTheVillage · 13/10/2024 12:13

I so agree. Terrible signal out of London and in London, despite changing providers.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 13/10/2024 12:28

The only signal I can get in my house is 3, it used to be a decent signal but when they upgraded the mast last Christmas I was left with no data for 6 weeks when it did finally return the signal was appalling. Regularly getting data speeds at 1.5mb. The only good thing is I'm actually with Smarty so am only tied to the month I've paid for.

They still intend to get rid of landlines by 2030 i think. We constantly loose signal on both mobile and wifi, we have been advised to buy a satellite phone.

They've got rid of landlines where I live already. It's wifi or nothing.

That's awful. My choice will be satellite phone or move 😕

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/10/2024 15:24

Landlines are not disappearing, you can get a managed VoIP service where you plug your phone in to your router.

Yes, so it depends on your internet connection. It's not an actual landline.

And that doesn't work in a power cut.

SE London and can't a signal on the train.

We have a landline phone that plugs into the router. It doesn’t use wifi.

A friend who lives in deepest tribal Northern Pakistan gets a better phone & data signal than me.
