To be sick of the piss poor phone signal across UK

I'm sick of it.

I'm in a place I've been to a million and one times. It's usually got amazing signal but this time I can barely get 3G! I was down in Cornwall the other month and despite having full 5G it wouldn't even send a text!

It's shocking, what am I even paying for with my phone contract at this point

There’s definitely no o2 signal in York city centre, or hasn’t been the last three times I’ve been. A shop worker to,d me York city centre is notorious for poor signal. I was gobsmacked to be honest. A whole city centre with no phone signal! Maybe more common than I realised.

Canterbury is a weird dead zone for phone signal.

It's because it's a UNESCO world heritage site, so planning restrictions mean basically nothing can pierce the skyline around the cathedral. So no masts in the city at all. It's a total black spot inside the city walls.

Snap! 👆
Canterbury the same. Probably for similar reasons. Nice cathedral tho.

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 12/10/2024 19:49

Its regularly crap where I live.

Something like 1% of traffic was on the 3 G network so if you have lost service as a result it would be rather surprising

I met two people the other day both now need new phones as theirs is no longer compatible now 3G is switched off husband and wife so double the cost

If I told you that telco companies can use the existing fibre network to boost mobile phone signal (still need a structure/mast of sorts but much lower than a normal mast) in instances like this but seemingly choose not to.

Similarly stadiums, train stations, hospitals etc who will all have existing fibre infrastructure for their WiFi.

I'm probably thinking of it too simply but DH works in the field and I was astounded when he told me.

Getonwitit · 12/10/2024 20:09

We have such poor mobile and wifi that we can't even have a smart meter in our area, power company told me i had to have a smart meter i argued that we couldn't but they insisted so i thought crack on, out they came put the meter in, replaced it twice when it wouldn't work and finally admitted we don't have enough signal.
We can't use a DAB radio and our tv signal disappears switches between Scottish And Ulster tv. The electricity has a mind of it's own. Thank god i have a landline phone.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 12/10/2024 20:17

I'm in Milton Keynes and on O2. In the city centre there is a black spot right where my office is. My work phone is also O2 and has the same issue so I know it's not my phone. I can literally predict when my phone will lose signal.

I went way down south to Portsmouth earlier this year and it was even worse!! Couldn't get any signal, no 4g no nothing. Was like being back in the dark ages. Even my inlaws in deepest, darkest Scotland get decent 4g!

VesperLind · 12/10/2024 20:26

I’m on O2 and can’t make a call inside my house. The telephone exchange is 30 paces from my front door…

Malbecfan · 12/10/2024 20:35

Vodafone is shit in my DF's part of S Manchester but is the only provider that works in my part of Devon. However, with no notice, the mast here is having some maintenance issues. One of the ladies in the local area managed to speak to a Vodafone rep who said "maintenance is from mid August to the end of October". She asked what we were meant to do during those 10 or so weeks and he said "I don't know".

Probably another Brexit benefit.

BecauseRonald · 12/10/2024 20:36

I thought this was just our local town.... in the last couple of years it has become impossible to make a phone call or send a text. Shocked to see it's a widespread issue.

As with so many things in the UK we pay top first world prices for pretty much third world service.

PandaChopChop · 12/10/2024 20:36

I thought it was just me!! We spent a week in Weymouth and no signal all week. And attended a festival in Oxford where it said we had 4G but couldn't even get a call out. My area is patchy.
There is a running joke though that when all the signal and data goes here it's because the prime minister is in Chequers.

SunmerSazz · 12/10/2024 20:49

Vodafone def got worse here and now barely works inside my house (used to be absolutely fine). Live fairly rurally so doesn't feel like it's due to increasing volume of data traffic 🤷‍♀️

Roundthemoon · 12/10/2024 21:15

The UK is the only country that I've had bad phone signal in.

What's going on with it?

wombat1a · 12/10/2024 21:20

On vodaphone and its terrible in our area, often takes 1-24 hrs to get a text message, meaning if you try to sign into a web-site and they send you a code via phone you can't. I was locked out of works email for 2 days last month because I couldn't get the 2fa code via phone.

I'm with EE signal is often bad here too, Essex.

coffeesaveslives · 12/10/2024 21:25

Last week I would have agreed with you, but I just upgraded my phone and my signal is much better than it used to be!

Seagall · 12/10/2024 21:47

I got a brand new phone a few weeks ago and it's still shit.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/10/2024 21:47

I'm in the south west and it's ridiculous how bad the signal is.

Seagall · 12/10/2024 21:48

I'm also in the south west

I'm in the south west. In Cornwall it was awful, even with 4G you couldn't load anything. Entire towns without any signal at all.

Agree, it’s awful. We lived in Surrey for a while and our house had zero signal. I’d understand if we were rural but we were 15 mins outside Guildford. But even Guildford was patchy. My DH would regularly drive from Stafford to London and would have no signal going past Birmingham. It’s the second biggest city FGS!
Went to Corfu and we even had a signal out on the sea. 5G pretty much everywhere.

When you’d try to download one of these parking payment apps and there’s no signal it would send me crazy. My BIL was like “oh we just use wifi everywhere” but it’s madness to be in a developed country and not have a phone signal.

rockstarshoes · 12/10/2024 21:58

I'm always banging on about this!

If the Govt want to grow the Economy they absolutely have to fix this!

I live in Bucks regularly travel in to London on the train for work & pleasure!

Half the journey there's no phone signal & half the time the train WIFI doesn't work! It's so frustrating!

And actually WIFI is another issue, 20 -21 both of us WFH full time the WIFI never faltered, I was so impressed!

Now 2024, I struggle to get a service in the kitchen, no chance in the garden & even in bed when I'm almost sat on top of the modem I can't watch an instagram reel!

rockstarshoes · 12/10/2024 22:02

I went to Vegas in April for 4 nights, signed in to the WiFi in the hotel the first night & wherever I went for the whole 4 days I was connected!

Now it probably sucked every bit of data from my phone in the process but it was so bloody refreshing!

rockstarshoes · 12/10/2024 22:07

I'm with Virgin if anyone can recommend an anyone else? Is Sky better?
