To not pay the cleaner

MamaD2207 · 11/10/2024 12:50

We have had a cleaner for about a month and she is absolutely great. Today I had £100 on my bedside table this morning. There is no one else who could have taken it, but there is no evidence it was her. Am I being unreasonable not paying her ?

Yes very young are basically saying she is a thief. Wait and think in case you or someone else has moved it and forgotten. If you continue to suspect the cleaner you can stop her working for you in future but you need to pay what you owe as no evidence.

i send her a bank transfer when she’s gone yes. That is the norm for us.

Of course it is up to you whether you employ the cleaner again, but if she has been great in every other way, would you consider keeping her on but being careful not to leave money out in the open? She may be relying on the income from her job. If she did take the money, it may be because she's desperate.

How much was the cleaning bill for today - just out of interest?

TurtlesDoNotPetsMake · 11/10/2024 13:59

I used to clean holiday homes. Some owners would leave little traps to see of we were cleaning under things (£1 coins etc) We would put them in envelopes, date them and pop them under the door of their private locked cupboard.

You can't just not pay her, no.
What you could do is set a trap, set up a camera to try and see if it was her? Or just don't use her again.
Have you asked her about it?
If you literally live alone so it could only be her then that's terrible, but I think you'll need proof.

You do know you aren't allowed to film people without their consent?

Well really I just wanted peoples opinions. This is very new to me. I’m glad you all have very trustworthy people in your lives

You do know that it’s not that simple? At all.
How would people ever have evidence of crimes for example if we had to stop and ask someone to film them. Of course, there are exceptions (eg. In a place where you’d expect privacy such as a bathroom) but overall you’re wrong.

I would politely ask the person if they took it.

End of.

ElleneAsanto · 11/10/2024 14:11

Very strange to randomly leave £100 cash on a bedside table?

What sort of brain comes up with that? Ive been in some very grubby holiday homes btw.

My mother accused me of stealing some wartime documents when I was about 7/8. I had taken them to school for a show and tell and my mother claimed that I never brought them back - so I must have stolen them or the teachers must have stolen them. I explained where I had put them (in a drawer in my dad's dresser) but she never believed me. The documents went missing in the 1960s and she was still going on about the "theft" of her valuable mementoes to all and sundry around 50 years later.

After she died going through her stuff - guess what we found? (Her documents) Guess where we found them (dad's dresser drawer). This despite her having moved house twice and dad having died 15+ years earlier!

That’s a really sad story, but why did you not look in the drawer yourself at the time, or when you were older?

Tomatovine · 11/10/2024 14:16

years ago (I actually posted about it on MN) I had a cleaner and she told me a few times that ‘if you can’t find anything don’t worry I’ve been helping to out the washing away but may have put in the wrong drawers/room’ so when I couldn’t find stuff I thought that was why until I was really noticing not being able to find items.
I went out one day and bumped into her and said hi and she looked petrified and it was so weird I just kept chatting then I suddenly realised she was wearing a full outfit of my clothes ! I said bye then text immediately ‘nice cardigan where did you get it ? ‘ went home changed the locks that day and never heard from her again

YeFaerieBean · 11/10/2024 14:17

I had an electrician fit a new light fitting (very small chandelier) and he had to go in the bedroom above (pull cable through??).

When he had finished he said quite angrily “I found a note (some money) on the floor and I’ve put it on the dressing table”. It was a foreign bank note I’d forgotten all about.

It was only a while later I figured out why he might have been “angry” - maybe someone had once accused him of stealing cash, and made a big thing about it.

If I have a tradesperson coming round to my house I do a quick check that I haven’t left any cash or valuables lying around - not because I’m worried about theft but because I don’t want to lay “traps” for people or have them think that I have.

Tomatovine · 11/10/2024 14:17

Oh and I googled her after and saw she had been in prison for benefit fraud ! I was so annoyed as someone had recommend her to me as reliable and trustworthy !

Completely certain. I know it was there this morning, I know it is no longer there or anywhere around there. My first thought it’s been knocked / moved

Certain it wasn't taken by a member of your family?
