Parking ticket fine

So me and my partner went for a meal on Saturday 28th September. We bought a pay and display ticket for 2 hours and were there for 1 and a half hours. We received a letter yesterday which is a £60 fine, I appealed it this morning and sent a picture of the pay and display ticket plus a screen shot of the transaction on my bank statement.

The appeal has been rejected because it is computer generated and there is no payment against my reg plate. The rejection email states there may have been a “keying error” which I am assuming that means maybe I entered my reg plate incorrectly. I can’t find any number to call them to explain. The fact of the matter is that I paid for that parking. I am now being charged £80. I want to explain to someone that if they check their system they will see a reg plate the same as mine but maybe off by 1 letter or number because I must have hit the wrong key or something.

What’s should I do in this situation? Do I just admit defeat and pay £80 for a ticket that I actually already paid for, or would I get anywhere if I kept pushing back and didn’t pay it? I just don’t think it’s fair for me to be charged this when my car had a ticket in it for the duration of my stay and I haven’t done anything wrong apart from human error, but still paid! Does anyone have any advice and know how on earth I contact euro car parks? My fine was £60 but because I appealed it they’ve added another £20 as an admin charge 😢 I don’t have the money and feel like this is very unfair

If you did put in the wrong reg, then there’s not much you can do. These parking firms are ruthless and you can never actually speak to anyone. 🤷‍♀️. I would pay it, or the costs keep increasing.

ExtraOnions · 11/10/2024 12:38

When you typed your reg number in, was this not printed into your pay & display ticket?

Who issued the fine? (not that it’s a fine, but that’s another matter)

DappledThings · 11/10/2024 12:38

So did you enter your plate incorrectly or not? If you have a photo of the ticket as you said then you can check. If it does have an error you're screwed really.

I’m not sure because I can’t manage to call to speak to anyone in person. This is what my letter said. So I am assuming the keying error means I entered a digit wrong on my reg. but it won’t be a completely different registration, it would only be off by one number so surely they can see that it’s a mistake but I did actually pay for the ticket

The numberplate you entered will be printed on the ticket.
The other potential error is that the ANPR/Beryl misread your plate if the one on your ticket is correct.

If you mis-entered the numberplate and the one on the ticket is wrong, then I don't think there's not much you can do. Maybe try Honest John and see if there's any advice posted there?

Oh sorry I thought it was a fine, you’re right it just says parking charge. The letter is from euro car parks

If you have a ticket, that covers that parking period .. I would be very much “see you in court”

The ticket doesn’t have a reg number on it

It looks like either the machine has only recognised that you pressed a D as your reg, or you only entered a D...

That's what I was going to say. Looks like the tickets I get in my local supermarket car park. That space where it says Reg: D is where your registration should appear.

DogInATent · 11/10/2024 12:47

Where it says "Reg: D" is supposed to be your numberplate.

They can't find a numberplate one or two digits different to yours, because you only entered one digit for the numberplate.

KrisAkabusi · 11/10/2024 12:47

There's definitely a space where there is supposed to be a Reg. You didn't input it, so the camera didn't recognise your reg as having paid. I think you're going to have to suck this up. It's not a matter of one letter or number different, it's several characters missing.

DogInATent · 11/10/2024 12:48

OP, at this point you're allowed to swear like a sailor.

Malbecfan · 11/10/2024 12:49

There is a forum on MoneySavingExpert dedicated to fighting Parking Tickets. Get yourself over there, read all the sticky posts at the top and then ask for help.

You have to put some work in but the experts there will help you.

ExtraOnions · 11/10/2024 12:50

The machine shouldn’t issue a ticket unless the full reg was entered.. if they are using ANPR. It may well be a machine error

I would appeal up to the trade body, and assuming that’s Deansgate in Manchester, go to the Manchester Evening News.

Girlinblue · 11/10/2024 12:50

Ah shit!!!! You’re right! Omg I was that worked up that I totally missed that it just says D Where the reg should be. I admit I made a mistake then by not realising that the keypad didn’t take my reg number, but the fact is I still paid for the ticket, I paid to park there, I had the ticket on my window. It just feels very unfair to be punished for this error 😢

How would it know it's the full reg? Personalised plates can be only 4 characters. You could argue it should have a 3 character minimum input but I don't think it's an argument that would (or should) hold water when it's the payer's responsibility to enter it correctly and check

The machine does have to allow for private numberplates, overseas numberplates, etc. Admittedly, a single letter is not going to fulfil the requirements of any numberplate system I can think of, but the system has to allow for a very wide range of formats.

I've had to pay £50 before when I had paid but had accidentally clicked the wrong car in the Ringo app. My daft error, no intention to not pay but no argument to be had to not pay the fine. Just have to chalk that one up to experience.

Afriendwithbreastsandalltherest · 11/10/2024 12:54

Those tickets can hold your full number plate. This is your error.

K1 is a legal numberplate in the UK. Only two characters.

ChaChaSlide101 · 11/10/2024 12:56

There might have been a fault with the machine though - can you go back and check? Film yourself putting a reg number in and see if it all comes up on the screen?

Hoppinggreen · 11/10/2024 12:57

Unfortunately I think you do need to pay as its your error.
I know that carpark and you are supposed to enter your numberplate.
I did have a similar issue but because there was just an o instead of a 0 they allowed the appeal and I didn't have to pay.
There is no number you can call to explain unfortunately

Girlinblue · 11/10/2024 12:59

Yes this is my error, I will pay it because it’s only 1 letter. I was thinking that maybe I typed it in correctly and just got it wrong by one letter but in this case I can’t prove which car this ticket belongs to so I’ll have to accept the responsibility and learn a lesson! Thank you for the responses

… get it appealed, you paid, you had a ticket, on
their ANPR cameras they can see you arrival and departure time, and you have a ticket that matches those times.
They have no evidence their machine was not faulty.

Go to the trade body.

This is why these vile companies kept operating, because people don’t appeal.

We have parking eye at the hospital, I got a digit wrong, got a “fine”, I rang them, they cancelled it, it can be done.
