AIBU to ask a woman not to let her dog crap on the pavement?

I was walking with my buggy yesterday and a woman of about 25 was chatting on her mobile phone while her dog poo-ed copiously on the pavement (about 5 yards from a nursery).

I am sick of dodging dog poo all the time - it's everywhere, it gets on the wheels of my buggy and therefore into my house, and scraping it off my son's shoes isn't much fun either.

I asked her politely not to let her dog do that as it was a health hazard. She said repeatedly how she ALWAYS cleared it up at which point I said, great, thanks, and walked off.

She shouted after me that I was a "nosy bitch" and I turned round and said I wasn't, thanks very much, but I didn't see why it should get in my house, or make my children ill.

I was so angry and wondered if I should have intervened at all.

yes but she didnt even give the owner a chance to pick it up.dogs poo ,people poo,we all poo.so long as its dealt with theres not a problem.the owner didnt get chance to deal with it.

ditavonteesed · 23/04/2008 11:56

if she was that defensive then I bet she had no intention of picking it up until she was confronted. Sorry judgey I know but experience tells all.

YANBU.good point made by voluptuagoodshag-i often wonder why people let their dogs crap on the pavement?unless the dog is very old and incontinent or unwell, then why not train it to go in the gutter or whatever?

the dogs we had when i still lived with my mum was trained to go in the back garden,on the paved area so it was easy to clean afterwards.he never pooed anywhere else.

the problem where i live though is alot of people are too lazy to even take their dogs out for walks, and just let them out in the street to take themselves for a walk.saying that, many of them treat their kids the same

minouminou · 23/04/2008 11:58

i've noticed that, bethoo, but i wonder if they're just thinking "ooooh, i couldn't do that!", like bluefox does

SaggyOldBagpuss · 23/04/2008 11:58

Our dog usually does 2 poos a day, one when she is walked in the morning (usually when she is off lead in the field) and we always clear it up and the other is when we let her out down the drive in the evening.

I know that some dogs do poo while they are being walked and tbh as long as it's cleared up I don't see a probelm.

One of the most annoying things here is the lack of poop bins provided by the council and the fact that the field where ds plays football seems to be used as a dog toilet as the coaches have to clear it of shit before the kids can play football.

That is realy annoying as it uses our poop bags and it's not our dogs poo to pick up

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 23/04/2008 12:02

Ah yes, broken glass, chewing gum and fag ends irritate me just as much. Especially in parks.

It's a nightmare trying to walk with two toddlers who stop to pick up the shiny things on the floor.

Youcannotbeserious · 23/04/2008 12:02

Are police dogs really trained to poo on command?????????????

I did not know that!!!!!

It's perfectly possible to train ANY dog where it is and is not acceptable to toilet.... It's just an extention of house training!!!!!!

(Still not sure about pooing on command though!!)

minouminou · 23/04/2008 12:02

i disagree, dita, as i loathe non-picker-uppers and really get annoyed when people assume i'm one just because i'm not hovering by the dog's bum with a wad of bog roll and a bag, so the op would've got a similar response from me, although the words sanctimonious and under-occupied would've been used instead!
i can see why you'd think that, and the "nosy bitch" bit really let her down, but i don't think, from my experience, it means she wouldn't have picked up

purpleduck · 23/04/2008 12:05

kitti
I have a greyhound too, and I am sure she plans where the most inconvenient spot to poo is...

I do like the idea of getting the dog to poo in a gutter, but most of the roads on our school route are not appropriate for this. I don't want my dogs to get squashed.

I think op is BU, but I do think I would be a bit upset too if a dog poo'd just outside a nursery. If my dog was looking like she wanted one, I would try to drag her away a bit.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 23/04/2008 12:06

What about the police horses that are exercised on our road every day? They leave a trail of poo.

No one makes an effort to clear it so cars drive through it and smear it across the road.

Perhaps I should bag it up and offer it on freecycle?

minouminou · 23/04/2008 12:09

dunno if horse poo is as hazardous as dog, as they're herbivores

Youcannotbeserious · 23/04/2008 12:09

Horses (and other veggie animals) are different....

It's something to do with the enzymes and bacteria that meat eating animals have in their poo that makes the poo more dangerous...

(and, no, that doesn't mean if you have a beggie dog, it's ok!!! )

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 23/04/2008 12:11

But why are they allowed to leave it, it's tres disgusting.

Where are the lackies following with a shovel to clear it up?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 23/04/2008 12:12

Fair enough if we were in the countryside but we are in central London.

minouminou · 23/04/2008 12:12

snap!
and not forgetting toxicara, various other worms etc etc
also, you never know what a dog's picked up from the street, so i always assume it's full of every food-poisoning bug going and treat accordingly

Greyriverside · 23/04/2008 12:12

Even if they clear it up it's still smeared on the pavement and somnetimes carrying a serious disease. I don't blame the dog, but if someone let their dog shit on your carpet and said "hey it's ok I'll pick up the lumps - he has go somewhere" you'd not accept that.

If animals really can't be controlled that's fair enough. leave them in the wild where they belong.

minouminou · 23/04/2008 12:13

sigh

Youcannotbeserious · 23/04/2008 12:13

Can you imagine that being your job!!

What do you do? I'm a sh*t shoveller!!!

Seriously, I think it's just about the health issues - not the aestetic (sp?) qualities!!

Kitti · 23/04/2008 12:16

Purpleduck - GREYHOUNDS ROCK!!!!

frumpygrumpyhasnofaceon · 23/04/2008 12:16

When I was wee most people let their dogs poo in the gutter........its a fair compromise if you can't clean it up because its messy. Can't dogs be trained to poo there? Then if its solid, you pick up, if its not you let the environment help.

Its not that different from letting your child pee/poo in the gutter when they are desperate. How many of us have done that?

misdee · 23/04/2008 12:16

so, dog was poo-ing, before she had a chance to do anything you told her not to let her dog do that?

are you being just a little bit unreasonable. you didnt even wait and see if she was going to clear it up before having a go and going on about health hazards etc, so immediantly putting her on the defensive.

i am not a dog owner, am not fond of dogs, and am fed up of sidestepping poo on walk to school, but wouldnt say anything unless dog owner didnt scoop up the poo.

Youcannotbeserious · 23/04/2008 12:19

Agree with frumpygrumpyhasnofaceon!

frumpygrumpyhasnofaceon · 23/04/2008 12:24

Ah, thank you youcannotbeserious

Kitti · 23/04/2008 12:24

Not really safe do try it in the gutter with larger dogs. NOt always a gutter around when you need one. I have one dog that prefers the road rather than the pavement and another who loves long grass, bushes etc so it's well out of the way of a pavement but I'm still digging around trying to pick it all up!!

frumpygrumpyhasnofaceon · 23/04/2008 12:26

I'm kidding about the clique btw, I'm kidding!!!
