The colour changes, crisp, sunny days, crunchy leaves..I miss it 🍁 🍃 🍂

Tree outside my lounge window has been beautiful but looks a sight now as top half is bare but bottom half still covered in glory- it's an odd tree.

Spoke to a friend in the NW the other day, they have had 2 nice autumn days where it hasn't poured down with rain so far. They have slugs on the outside of their windows, windows with condensation and their local park is a mud bath. It sounds bloody miserable.

Sounds a bit extreme!
We have had lots of rain in NW (not unusual) but this week has been much better.
Today is a beautiful crisp sunny day, it's a bit colder than it has been which is turning the leaves so it's the kind of day you are describing.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 10/10/2024 12:19

I'm in the UK and miss it! Autumns really aren't like they used to be, but you get the "ooh, it's cosy with hot chocolate and blankies" brigade out telling you differently. It's mostly grey, rain and downright miserable.

I haven't seen a crane fly for donkeys years!

You want to be here then!

Our garden was infested with them so had it landscaped to help with drainage which along with treatment will (hopefully) eradicate them (or at least keep the numbers down).

Was dog walking the other day in what appeared to be a monsoon and the young crane fly were coming out of the ground by the thousand.

I love autumn too. We had a lovely misty morning here yesterday (South West) and it was just glorious. So sorry you’re missing it.

On the down side, it’s muddy, there are slugs everywhere, the house is full of spiders and to top it off we had a queen wasp in the kitchen last week which was truly terrifying (I’m not keen on normal sized ones, let alone 3 inch long massive buzzy ones!)

User1836484645R · 10/10/2024 12:44

The sun is shining and the sky is blue here. I’m going to take a photo before it starts raining again.

Bohomovies · 10/10/2024 11:11

It does look beautiful when it’s a clear sunny day, but most of the time autumn in the uk is just a lot of rain and a lot of house spiders.

Yes 100% this. You're maybe confusing uk with New England in the fall, here in uk it's just rain grey skies and shitty house spiders

Lilifer · 10/10/2024 12:47

Catza · 10/10/2024 11:12

It's been raining since October last year in West Country. Only stopped for 2,5 months before starting again in August. Which sunny days you speak of?

It stopped raining for 2.5 months?? Jesus consider yourself lucky, here in NI we had about 5 dry days over the entire summer preceded by non stop rain from oct 2023

ChefsKisser · 10/10/2024 12:48

I love autumn too! I also feel like I must like in a bubble as I live in NW England and we have had loads of lovely autumnal days recently! I was cycling home thinking how lovely it was with the different coloured leaves and sunshine. I love the darker evenings and mornings as the kids sleep better. But I love autumn too and don't think its been bad at all this year!

GalaticalFarce · 10/10/2024 12:48

I've had some fab forest walks this autumn inbetween the showers but it's too warm for autumn. Not that I mind but it's just a weird autumn after a weird summer.

Guavafish1 · 10/10/2024 12:48

Love autumn in uk but when you don’t have a summer it’s miserable

AnnunciataM · 10/10/2024 12:51

Crisp and sunny? The UK? Wet and grey, more like! All the leaves around here are soggy and very far from crisp.

You're confusing the UK autumn with the mumsnet autumn!

Loulo6098 · 10/10/2024 12:54

Have a good look at your clothes drying outdoors. I miss that!

But yeah, I do love Autumn here. I hate the spiders though.

@ChefsKisser

i think much has to do with your attitude.

out of my lounge window it looks grey & wet, but if you actually go outside it's much nicer than it looks.

@Dizzydizzydizzyy I lived in NZ for many years, I really really missed having seasons. NZ just drifts though the year, except for Christchurch, it's like a piece of England in the Autumn! Can you come over for a week??

ilovesooty · 10/10/2024 13:00

YouveGotAFastCar · 10/10/2024 11:13

We don’t often get that; though. It’s so romanticised.

It’s usually just cold, rain, dark and spiders. There’s very few crisp, sunny days; the leaves aren’t colourful because they’ve turned to mush on the floor and nobody is skipping around with a PSL.

I’d take Southern Europe any day!

So would I. I'd be in southern Europe like a shot if it were possible.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 10/10/2024 13:05

Well, this autumn is all rain, rising damp, and daddy long legs bigger than an arse cheek, so... enjoy Southern Europe!

Itrainedallday · 10/10/2024 13:06

Loving autumn today. A beautiful sunny day with colourful leaves! Crisp air. The faint smell of someone’s chimney…

🍁 it’s a lovely time of year.

But OP you have to enjoy what you do have! All that culture to explore.

TheWhalrus · 10/10/2024 13:07

Living abroad can make you miss the strangest things sometimes.

Imahosy · 10/10/2024 13:07

Today is beautiful, sun and cold. Just how it should be but yes more often grey and wet although that can be very atmospheric in the woods. I lived abroad for a bit and totally understand missing British weather bizarrely!

FemmeFemme · 10/10/2024 13:08

Sunny days???? !!!!

SameOldMeals · 10/10/2024 13:08

I’m not really a fan of Autumn but it’s been a pleasant one in my area so far. Not much rain, more sunny days that we had in the Summer and chilly but not excessively so. I’m almost enjoying it.

EBearhug · 10/10/2024 13:08

When I went travelling round tropical countries years back, I was surprised to find I missed the unpredictability of British weather and seasons - particularly dry, bright, sparkly frosty sunny winter days. Waking up to sun every day got a bit boring. And then, except for a rainshower at about the same time every afternoon, it stayed the same.

Here, whatever it is when you wake up could be quite different from yesterday and is likely to be different again when you go to bed. Admittedly the endless dingey grey and wet that we're currently having is rather soul-sapping, but the sun is starting to peek through the clouds right now, and I'm probably appreciating it more than if it was the default.

DeedlessIndeed · 10/10/2024 13:10

It's glorious autumn day in Glasgow today. I'll try to take a picture - blue skies and crisp leaves. Simply beautiful.

It's very possible that she was exaggerating somewhat. I think it was more that it felt like it had rained non-stop. But the slugs on the windows I remember too from when I lived there.

SameOldMeals · 10/10/2024 13:12

It’s not that odd. Plenty of people love Autumn and the changing of the seasons. I’m not really one of them because I detest Winter but there are plenty of Autumn fans around.
