Aibu to be annoyed at the painter leaving my new bathroom like this?

I've just bought my first house which is a new build and it's just been finished. I went around yesterday to check over everything and make sure I've a note of all the snags prior to sale closing.

The interiors painting was organised by my builder who got the painters in to do all the rooms.

I checked my downstairs toilet and saw that someone has used it, (for a no2) and not cleaned it particularly well. Like they obviously flushed it but there was still skid marks and disgusting stuff left in bowl.

I had to go and buy a brush and some bleach and a scrub it out myself as wasn't happy to leave it sitting like that.

I was annoyed at that but what also really annoyed me was that it was obviously the painter has used it because he also left a bloody big smudge of paint on the seat, the porcelain underside of it.

This is a brand new bathroom and I'm fucked off that he not only used it and didn't have the wit to leave it as clean as he got it but also left paint on it that I now have to sort.

Aibu to be pissed off about this? I'm meeting my builder today to run over some last minute stuff and feel like I should mention it to him as he should have a word with his builder to have a bit more respect for peoples property 🤔

So how did you expect him to clean the toilet if you had to go out and get stuff to clean it? Meaning there was nothing there to clean it with I'm assuming. Annoying yes, complaint worthy? I don't think so. The paint on the toilet seat however should be sorted by them, maybe mention that bit to the builder.

Northernladdette · 13/10/2024 12:40

Tbf, you have said there was no toilet brush, what did you expect him to do? At least he didn’t shat on your floor 🙄

Emmz1510 · 13/10/2024 12:43

I’d forget the skid marks. The worker was obviously caught short and unless there was equipment nearby to clean it what else was he supposed to do? Although I personally will just wipe the bowl with toilet tissue before washing my hands, if the need arises 😳. Bleach and elbow grease only tends to be needed if it’s been left a while.
I would raise the paint smear and expect this rectified.

ALJT · 13/10/2024 12:43

I think it’s not that you’re annoyed they used the toilet but just the fact they left it rancid and paint on the bowl. I’d be annoyed too.

Umidontknow · 13/10/2024 12:56

What was he supposed to clean it with? His paint brush? It's gross but dear god if this is all you have to focus on in life count yourself bloody lucky 🙄

74Violette · 13/10/2024 13:00

It's annoying but not worth complaining about. Builders always use the toilet and leave it in various states. The paint smear is probably an easy fix and white on white isn't too upsetting. Things are never perfect with building/installation work and as someone upthread said, you have to pick your battles.

HowYouSpellingThat10 · 13/10/2024 13:11

I'm not saying you don't have a right to be irked but I think the phrase 'pick your battles' applies here.

Just add 'paint on downstairs toilet seat' to the snagging list if it won't come off (if it's emulsion it should remove easily enough).

You are going to have a lot that needs sorting. But if you start complaining about someone using the toilet you risk being filed under 'that complaining woman '.

This might not be fair but it will mean your genuine complaints are taken less seriously.

AllstarFacilier · 13/10/2024 13:20

For our new build, they got cleaners in to make sure everything was clean before handing over the keys. I wouldn’t be cleaning until it was my house.

stopthepigeonstopthepigeon · 13/10/2024 13:24

MrMucker · 10/10/2024 12:48

If there's paint on the seat and it's fairly fresh then just clean it off. Will take you 2 minutes. Ditto for the cack smears in the bowl..Presumably you'd have to source toilet cleaning stuff for when you live there anyway?
So that'll take you all of five minutes to sort.
Versus complaining, which will take a lot more than five minutes out of a lot more than one person's day.

Saw thread title and thought maybe they've botched the edging, used the wrong colour, left undercoat showing, paint on carpet, dunno.

But what you actually have- could've cleaned it in the time it took you to post tbh.
Buying a house is stressful already enough, you need to pick the battles that matter, not sure this one does. Someone pooed during the course of their working day. You found a recent paint smudge on a nonporous surface. It's nothing really.

So she should just get on with cleaning up after this guy, who couldn’t possibly be expected to clean up after himself? 🙄
(Cos we all know he wouldn’t of bothered even if there was a toilet brush)

Lilifer · 10/10/2024 12:42

@KarmenPQZ it's a big smidge, about Palm of hand sized. I wouldn't do that to a friends or acquaintances home, leave a smear of paint on their furniture or fittings so don't see why he should. He could have simply left the toilet as he found it, not much to ask. There's always ways to get rid of shit stains without a toilet brush, we have all had to do it, it's not that difficult

But you had to go and buy a brush, so presumably didn’t want to use another way! Maybe the painter felt the same.

Yeah, but it was his shit tbf 💩

IMustDoMoreExercise · 13/10/2024 13:40

Not nice, but how could the painter clean the toilet if there was no toilet brush?

TBH, I would prefer to clean it myself as you don't know how the painter would have cleaned it (dripping the loo brush on the floor if he is careless).

Strawberrysherbets · 13/10/2024 13:41

Threads like this always highlight to me how much people are prepared to put up with to avoid any sort of confrontation. 🤯 I don’t mean you OP, I mean all the posters giving you a hard time for being bothered by the rank actions of the painter.

Strawberrysherbets · 13/10/2024 13:42

I’d have taken a picture, sent it to the foreman and said “just FYI, your decorator left paint and faeces all over the new toilet. See attached image.”

Easy.

Strawberrysherbets · 13/10/2024 13:42

IMustDoMoreExercise · 13/10/2024 13:41

Same way he presumably wiped his own arsehole.

So put his hand down the loo without gloves? Ok.

Of course. He left shit all over the toilet. A clod of paper, wipe the bowl below the water level. Flush. Wash hands with soap and water.

Jesus fucking Christ. This place. 😂

QueenCamilla · 13/10/2024 14:04

If any builder was in and actually completed the task given and didn't destroy something else in the process and didn't run away with 7 generations worth of life savings...
You might find me with a joyous smile : just the skid marks this time!!

After two complete house renovations, that's where I'm at.

QueenCamilla · 13/10/2024 14:06

And yes, he should have cleaned it. But he didn't. And it is annoying. It's a nuisance.

Autumnalfun · 13/10/2024 14:06

Lilifer · 10/10/2024 13:05

@ChiffandBipper
If I can manage to leave a toilet bowl clean without a scrub brush then I expect any other adult to be able to do so.

I don’t even want to ask how you do that. I’ve a sneaking suspicion people get their hands in there. 🤮

does the paint not wipe off? I’d not mention the skid marks, I’d only mention the paint if it does not come off. I’d wish to focus on the real issues.

twoshedsjackson · 13/10/2024 14:13

My house is not a new-build, so not quite the same situation, but I had a similar situation when one of the workers doing work on the builder's behalf left the toilet in a nasty state.
When I raised the issue, he was horrified, sent somebody round to clean up, and took the culprit off the job.
It was very clear that he valued the firm's reputation more highly than the skills on offer.

sharperthanaserpentstooth · 13/10/2024 14:30

If you had no toilet brush, how was he supposed to clean the toilet?

I'm amazed some people on here don't realise this but unpleasant as it is you can wipe skid marks away without a brush. To state the bleeding obvious, you flush the loo so there's only clean water down there, take a wodge of folded over loo roll and put you hand in, below water level if necessary and wipe. Flush again and wash your hands thoroughly. Not the nicest thing to do but no direct contact with poop either. He could have done that.
