My coffee order wasn’t weird?

Went to a local volunteer run cafe and a woman at the till was training someone.

I asked for a black americano with a shot of vanilla.

She looked at me like I was crazy and said “you mean a white americano”. I explained I definitely did not.

(I don’t have dairy and don’t really like any sort of milk in coffee anyway, but I like something to sweeten it. I prefer it to a sweetener.)

she said SO loudly “I’ve never seen that before! A latte or something yes, but really!”

and then the girl started to make it but was getting confused so the woman kept very loudly, in a quiet cafe, banging on about how she would be confused because it was a strange order but the customer is always right…

Am I a freak and I never realised!?!?

Oh wow ,I really like the sound of that and shall be asking for them same next time I'm out.

Totally normal, OP! I only drink black coffee (with about 5 sugars 😂), and I've added syrup before. I specify black Americano, because if I don't then they ask if I want milk or give it to me anyway. I don't like milky drinks. But I do like sweet coffee!

I used to work in volunteer management and often (but very definitely not always) the volunteer can be there more for their own needs than the cause.

And sometimes when that is the case there can be a level of social ineptness.

I wonder if that's what was going on.

Exactly my thoughts! I wondered if the staff member was maybe ND

@Waiting9. Not passive, just aggressive

How rude of her!

I'd have shot back with "well that's what I asked for isn't it .. raised eyebrow" / "Oh well I LIKE it & that's all that matters !"

I think the problem is more it being a volunteer-run cafe than a high street coffee shop, I've worked in a few and that's definitely not a weird order. But my order is double espresso, and outside of coffee shops (so say, my hospital volunteer cafe, or a pub) I find people don't know how to make it
