Ad inspired by Mumsnet utter garbage

So apparently Mumsnet has inspired these Burger King ads based on the 'insight' 'that for many mothers, the food you have straight after birth is one of the most amazing and unforgettable feelings ever.'
As a mum who gave birth to 28 week old twins who were immediately whisked away to the special care baby unit, I find this ad absolutely abhorrent. The last thing on my mind was food, let alone a burger. What a low aim, and another reason to avoid this brand.
Or is it just me?

I think it's you.

I'm sorry you had that experience but it's not the experience of a lot of women. I think you are projecting your horrible experience in your reaction.

wulves · 09/10/2024 17:50

I think it’s grotesque.

JustTalkToThem · 09/10/2024 17:51

🙄

Also you're being unreasonable in thinking this is MN-related. This is a well-discussed topic, it's not something MN thought up.

NCfor24 · 09/10/2024 17:52

I think for the majority of women the food they ate after birth is significant. I have frequently heard how amazing toast is after giving birth. It's not my experience after my c-sections and post anaesthesia nausea but I can totally see how after a long labour and nothing to eat, I would happily devour toast OR a BK burger!

So sadly you didn't have the birth experience of most women. And others in your situation could empathise. But I don't think the ad is misjudged.

TheSunnySideoftheStreet · 09/10/2024 17:55

I was very grateful for the toast and jam my midwife brought for me.

That ad, however, is truly gross. 👎

ladymalfoy45 · 09/10/2024 18:02

I was high as a kite after my EMC but those two slices of toast and butter were awesome.
However, not as mind-blowingly amazing as the sausage rolls and cold Ribena my mum brought me 8 hours after my ECS.
DD born at 1:30am
DM arrived at 9:30am. The sausage rolls weren't Greggs. She'd ' nipped into ' M&S for them.
For the four days I was in with DD I hoovered up sausage rolls and Ribena and Snickers as midnight , 2am,4am fuel for breastfeeding.
Can't imagine a drippy burger on a post natal ward.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 09/10/2024 18:04

The only place I've seen this raised iOS on here, haven't seen it in rl anywhere.

Sundaymondaytuesdayetc · 09/10/2024 18:05

I fail to see how that advert would convince any one to buy the product. It's almost designed to put you off Burger King for life.
I'm all for portraying real women in the media, adverts etc rather than models and the young and attractive but only a misogynist would think that is an acceptable way to portray a woman in an advert.

MoneyAndPercentages · 09/10/2024 18:07

I've heard it all the time IRL. When I was pregnant, I couldn't eat chocolate (not sure what I did to deserve that 😂) ~ I had a planned C Section and brought brownies from my favourite bakery for my first thing to munch! 😋

DM bonded with the FIL she hated because he brought her and cheese sandwich when everyone else was bringing baby gifts!

We are both fat, however. This may have something to do with it 😂

Ablondiebutagoody · 09/10/2024 18:08

Just you I reckon. I love a Whopper 😜

MargaretThursday · 09/10/2024 18:10

I was sick 24/7 throughout pregnancy until about an hour after birth each time.

I can't remember what I first ate after each one, but I do remember the blissful feeling of not feeling sick. 🤣

Wafflefudge · 09/10/2024 18:10

I don't understand what people are finding gross, it's just an advert that may or may not resonate with you

Haitchoraitchnobodygivesafuck · 09/10/2024 18:12

It's an advert for Burger King. What's it got to do with Mumsnet?

TwattyMcFuckFace · 09/10/2024 18:16

Yeah it might be just you OP.

I can't remember what I ate first after giving birth to any of my 3 DC, but I do remember the lovely cup of tea.

SisSuffragette · 09/10/2024 19:25

Op I think you're being very sensitive. It's a shame your birth didn't go to plan but loads of women have a particular craving for their after birth meal. I sent my brother out on his motorbike to get me a burrito 😅 you don't like the advert, fair enough but it's not Abhorrent or a low aim

PortiasBiscuit · 09/10/2024 19:26

Best toast and marmalade I ever ate.

soupfiend · 09/10/2024 19:27

Abhorrent?

Overreaction. Its funny. It applies to some people.

Grepes · 09/10/2024 19:43

I thought it was quite funny! I was absolutely starving and didn’t get any food until about 10hrs after birth (and I hadn’t eaten anything for 20hr prior to that). They gave me cold, yet burnt toast (which I had to butter my self (quite difficult when holding a baby in one arm). I would have devoured a burger! It’s actually made me hungry remembering how famished I was and now I’m craving a burger!!

OurSong · 09/10/2024 20:20

I'm sure junk food from Burger King is really nutritious for any mum who is trying to breastfeed, or who is trying not to be constipated with stitches. 🤔 I don't think it's abhorrent, it's just a really crap advert.

angellinaballerina7 · 09/10/2024 20:43

Me too @MargaretThursday ! I didn’t eat because I was scared to be sick but I drank gallons of water once I realised it wasn’t coming back up!

OP - I don’t find the ad tasteful, and I am really sorry for your experience, but I don’t think it’s the worst advert. Can’t imagine anyone wanting a BK though!

Notamused71 · 10/10/2024 21:43

So apparently the ad was based on an "insight/research" from Mumsnet...

If food is a big thing post birth, then great, and I probably would have killed for a cinnamon swirl or similar. I just found the Burger connection tenuous, cheap and a bit vile.... which probably stems from my slightly different birthing experience.

So a cinnamon swirl would be ok but the burger isn't?

MizzMarple · 10/10/2024 22:07

I like it. It was exactly how I felt tbh. I had hyperemesis in all my pregnancies that lasted up until birth and then immediately disappeared. The sheer relief of food tasting nice again and not having to worry about throwing up was amazing.

Needmorelego · 10/10/2024 22:17

When I had my baby there was a branch of Burger King in the hospital. She was in the scbu for a week but during doctors rounds parents couldn't stay on the ward.
I ate several Burger Kings during that week.

How is it misogynistic...?
