To ask if your teen DC vape?

Do your teen DC vape? My 17 year old DD has just started vaping and I’m furious as we are all non smokers in this household. Just wondering, out of interest, if anyone else’s teen DC vape and what did you do to try and stop them? Did it work or did they just keep on vaping? I’m determined to get DD to quit vaping but DH thinks it will be difficult due to her age!

I think your DH is right. I would be furious too if my 17 year old started vaping. I vape, and it feels like my lungs are full of oil. Maybe tell them that. Such a waste of their youthful health :( I hope you can somehow get through to your DC before the life- long addiction really takes hold

Did you smoke before vaping out of interest? Our DD took up vaping without smoking which I think is ridiculous! She’s never smoked in her life besides these vapes which she’s recently started using! I don’t understand why people take up vaping when they’ve never smoked.

My youngest son (18) vapes. He works very hard and earns his own money so i can't really dictate what he spends his money on.

However its the lesser of 2 evils as he had a bad weed addiction before this and quit the weed using vapes. So IDK, I'm inclined to leave him be.

KimberleyClark · 09/10/2024 10:17

IMO vapes should only be available from pharmacies on production of proof of age. They shouldn’t be on general sale.

toomuchfaff · 09/10/2024 10:17

IMO vaping is just another addiction. Regardless if it's "better" than the alternative. The crux is, it's the beginning of an addiction (where the long term side effects are unknown).

So, yes. I'd be furious, just as furious as if they started smoking or drinking.

Whether you can change your teens mind to do it is another matter, but you should try.

I will definitely try however DH reckons that it will be difficult due to her age.

I referred to them as adult dummies to my niece. Took the coolness look away from them.

They are addictive though so appreciate it is hard to stop.

Edited

Yeah, I did smoke, and it took a lot in a sense to lessen the addiction down to the vaping. Although that level of addiction is still strong. For me, I took up nicotine at 16 out of social anxiety. It was something to do with my hands, something to fill the silence in social situations. Your daughter, as well, may not see it as as serious a habit as it really is. One thing I only realised in the times I managed to take breaks from it altogether is that nicotine is actually a much heavier drug than we tend to think- it blunts everything, dulls your emotions

Neither of my kids vape luckily. Both are totally against it but DD 16 said when she was in school she estimated 60-70% of kids in her year had a vape. They were cheap and easy to get hold of. Plus they "taste like sweets" so her finds say.

CowTown · 09/10/2024 10:37

It’s a tough one. The problem with vaping is that it’s hard to understand what the equivalent of one cigarette is. In the old days, if you chain smoked an entire pack of cigarettes, you had to physically take each individual cigarette out of the pack and light it. A deliberate action. Now, you can keep sucking down a vape, and not realise you’ve “smoked a whole pack” until it’s empty. I went to a friend’s BBQ a few weeks ago and her 19 year-old niece was sucking on her vape the entire night. I really felt sorry for her—she clearly has an addiction.

I think your DD needs help for her addiction. There is a vaping documentary about Juul on Netflix and it’s so sad—teens’ first thought of the day is their vape, and they continue throughout the day, even through their sleeves in lessons because they can’t get through without the hit. And one girl added up her annual financial commitment, and was horrified about the money she wastes. I felt sorry for them all.

My dd17 vapes. She lives with her dad and he's provided her with them since she was 14/15. He's an utter dickwad. I'm furious but powerless to do anything about it. She's asthmatic too.

LionInTheDen · 09/10/2024 10:52

Has anyone managed to stop their DC from vaping? I imagine it must be quite difficult to.

That is just, I can't even think of a word

Namechangetotalkaboutmysleepingpillsproblem · 09/10/2024 10:59

OP, if you don't already, could you start charging her rent ? Lessen her disposable income ? Really talk to her about why she is doing this, although I'm sure you have already tried

LegoTherapy · 09/10/2024 11:17

@Namechangetotalkaboutmysleepingpillsproblem I know. He's the laziest parent I know but Dd won't come back to me because I have rules.

Maybe she will when she gets a little older. I hope so x

I said this on another thread, it only really changes when they want it to.

DD became seriously ill due to being highly addicted and it scared her into stopping.

We already charge her rent.

I used to think why do people start vaping after not smoking but now think it's exactly the same as taking up smoking. I mean why on earth do people do it? Coming from an ex very young smoker the vaper.

Vaping is super addictive and the costs add up rapidly. Wish I could give up but when my parents went mad about smoking it made me want to do it more 🙄 my DC doesn't vape but said sooo many kids do at school.

Musiclover234 · 09/10/2024 12:44

I think governments need to get a grip of this. As in teens being so attracted to it. Why i think it’s a good way of coming off actual cigarettes, i do not think it’s risk free and is a bit of a medical timebomb with the amount taking it up. It’s difficult because the black market/unregulated ones are even worse. Some people are going to get some serious lung/health damage. For some the messaging was basically oh it’s better than smoking it’s fine to do it. Which we aren’t really that sure on yet for long term use.

Like previous posters have said some people have no idea how much nicotine they are actually taking in and how addicted they are. It’s much more to hand and people are constantly sucking on them. The flavours and bright colours are always going to attract teens.

Iloveagoodnap · 09/10/2024 13:00

If they do they don't do it in front of me. I once found one in my 16 year old's blazer pocket and told him how disappointed I was. He claimed it wasn't his. A likely story. I told him I watched my dad die of lung cancer and I didn't want to go through that ever again. Until they're 18 I will maintain the line that it is forbidden. As adults if they want to do it then that is their choice but I will make it clear how much I hate it and they will not be doing it around me.

Raindancer411 · 09/10/2024 13:03

My son's school has just sent out an email about talking to the our kids on vaping, after a student needed medical attention and an ambulance called.

I have spoke to him as I have said it's really not healthy and I think anti social. I hate it when I walk down the street and someone really far up blows at of smoke and I still end up with a face full and smell. Luckily so far he doesn't seem interested in it.

I wish I could too. I had a massive asthma attack and almost died, and they told me I have to stop it, and I'm still doing it. I take a pink inhaler every morning now, and a few days ago I stopped managed 12 hours, and my chest was just clear, no asthma
