Bathroom Refurb- how long?

Just looking for opinions here. We are looking to get our average sized (possibly small) bathroom room replaced and have been told it will take 3 weeks minimum... AIBU to think this is wayyy too long??
We will remove all of the the existing tiles and Lino floor prior to starting so that leaves:
-Tiling (full height walls and floor)
-New bathroom suite (bath, sink and toilet)
-replace electric shower (over bath)
-new radiator

Our small bathroom was done within the week with 2 guys working on it approx 8-4.30 each day. But we were retiling over where tiles were previously (so no reskim required) and the new suite was going back in the same place. Something like this:

Day 1: removal of bathroom suite and tiles. Fit bath (easiest to do first as more space available), box in new toilet cistern (is a concealed cistern). New piping for toilet and sink fitted

Day2: tiling. And a few prep bits

Day3: Grouting. Fit towel rail, bathroom cabinet and light.

Day4: Fit toilet, sink, shower and shower screen (over bath).

They did work hard though! And did a cracking job. We painted ourselves

The problem with bathrooms is that they’re tight spaces so very often one man working mostly alone otherwise they’re getting in each other’s way. As PP have said, a lot will depend on the size of tiles you’ve chosen, the layout of the tiles (herringbone takes longer), and how many cuts are required per row per wall. Again, herringbone will add to this as there’s lots of cuts. Then you need to allow time for the adhesive to set before grouting and allow for the grout to cure fully, especially in wet areas. Small things can have a major impact on timescales, especially if your walls aren’t fully square and flat. I work for a building company and live in a house that doesn’t have a straight line in it, everything takes so much longer!

Gosh, I feel naive but I had no idea it took so long! How do people manage with washing if you only have one bathroom??

With ours, they took out and replaced the toilet and sink on the same day, and same with the bath the next day. So whilst we didn't have a shower for a few days, we did have washing facilties.

If they say three it will be longer. We were told three. It was seven.

But I think you're being unrealistic as even our smallish en suite was 3 weeks.

Yes this is my worry, he has said 3 weeks + which assumes all is well... any issues discovered will add god knows how many weeks. We only have one bathroom.

2-3 weeks. Pipes will need some adjustment regardless that you are keeping the positioning the same.

Many unknowns in a bathroom refurb, depends what is underneath and how well it was done before. Are they plastering? Are they tanking floor? Tiling tjme depends on size of tiles and how many fiddly cuts.

No plastering (hopefully), or tanking.
We have gone with the tile size they have suggested as being easiest install for the size of the room

I had a full refurb, full removal, replaced plasterboard, moved plumbing and full fit out. Started Monday morning finished Friday afternoon and only the plasterer was there one evening everything else done in day time

This is what I had assumed. I cannot see how it could take any longer than this

I'm very surprised at these responses. I had the same works plus plastering and it took four days. They plumbed the old toilet back in each night for us to use and we used the shower at the local leisure centre.

wowzelcat · 06/10/2024 22:19

we had two bathrooms renovated in 2 weeks. Both had to be replastered, but plumbing was in same place. A bathtub was taken out to be replaced by a large shower. No wall moving.

Actually reading again, I had more works. They:

Took out old suite
Took down old tiles
Put in new suite
Put up new tiles, full height on 2 walls and half on 2 walls
New radiator
Plastered half walls

I kept the old floor tiles.

Ours took 2 weeks. Would have been quicker, but a bank holiday led them to down tools for an extra day.

Luckily it coincided with our neighbours holiday, so we used their bathroom while ours was out of action.

To be fair the company we chose do almost every bathroom refurb in a week and only very occasionally need to take extra time. They had to remove two layers of tiles on the floor, and everything else including parts of the wall. There was 3 of them there most days and they had it down to a fine art. We had toilet access every evening and showered at gym / parents house. Only having 1 bathroom I was worried but it was manageable for a week

Tinysarah1985 · 07/10/2024 00:31

Ours took 4 days, including old tiles removed and wall replastered and re-tiled (they were big tiles though), bath, toilet and sink ripped out and replaced and floor redone. The guy's worked from 8.30-4 each day
