To absolutely HATE wearing glasses?

Fluffyflipflop · 06/10/2024 12:17

I started needing glasses for both distance and reading around a year ago. Probably sooner than that actually but I put off going to the opticians for a long time.

I have varifocals, and they do their job in as much as I can see, but I HATE wearing them so much.

I hate having something touching my face all the time. I feel hassled by them as constantly aware of them. I’ve tried multiple styles and sizes and took ages to settle on a pair I can tolerate and they all constantly slide down my nose. Even the lightest frames feel heavy.

Ive got a trial for contacts coming up but because of my vision and my rugby ball shaped eyes I have to have “special” ones of those which are extremely expensive.

I’m not sure what I’m posting for but just to vent I guess.

arrrgghhhhh

On retirement my husband and myself attended Moorfields eye hospital as private patients to have ‘replacement lenses’ implanted. I had worn glasses for 50 years, very short sighted and with astigmatism. He had only worn glasses for a few years. 10 years on we are so happy we did it.

LadyChilli · 06/10/2024 16:11

I can't bear glasses on my face. The lack of peripheral vision, the constant awareness of something plastic on my face, them never feeling quite right on my nose (and I've had loads of pairs over the last 30 years so it's definitely me that's the problem). I wear them when I first get up in the morning but hate cooking or doing anything in them so it has to be contacts.

GiddyRobin · 06/10/2024 16:12

I've had glasses since I was 5. I hated them so much then; the feeling of them on my face, they made the bridge of my nose tickle and feel almost..static?

Now I'm used to them, in my thirties. I don't actually like my face without them as much, I'm that used to them! Wore contacts on my wedding day and oh my God, I felt like an imposter every time I saw myself. 😂 Promise you get used to it.

DH's vision isn't as poor as mine (I'm short sighted, can't see the world at all without glasses unless it's half an inch before my face), but he has poor short and long vision. He has two pairs of glasses because he loathed varifocals. Poor man can't ever get the best of both worlds at the same time, but he finds it easier this way. Varifocals made him feel unwell.

Also, have you had the lenses slimmed down? You do have to pay more but it makes a huge difference.

twomanyfrogsinabox · 06/10/2024 16:13

For me contact lenses are much better for astigmatism (I think because they are closer to the eye), distant glasses make me feel a bit dizzy, I have RGP contacts for distance and tend to just put on, off the shelf readers when necessary. RGP lenses are much cheaper and I think give better vision than soft lenses. You can get bi-focal lenses but I haven't tried them.

Ah, I feel your pain. I have nearly started a similar thread several times. I had absolutely no vision problems until about 45 then started needing readers and it all deteriated quite quickly. It's definitely not a vanity thing - I quite like how they suit me and like having different styles..it's just the FAFF, all the time. I'm not bad enough for varifocals but need them for reading and middle distance like watching TV, looking at the whiteboard at work (teacher) but not driving etc. Hate walking round in them as it makes me feel dizzy but need them constantly for glancing at my phone, reading labels, even just telling the time etc. They're on and off, on my head, put down somewhere etc. They're also constantly grubby from all the on and off so I'm always cleaning them. I put them in a case in my bag so they don't get damaged and then need them again 2 minutes later for something!

This is exactly my experience, but after about 2.5 years I’m finally starting to find them less annoying. I have started carrying a handbag around the house with me with my glasses, phone, iPad and lip balm because I got so annoyed with not having my glasses there when I needed them. I also keep a tiny pair of folding ones in my proper handbag for menus and food labels when I’m out and about.

I think when you only start needing them in midlife, it’s much more of an adjustment and it’s very striking what a poor solution they are and how inconvenient. Especially when you don’t need to wear them for everything, and actually can’t see as well at a distance with them on. The on-off dance is so irritating.

Redcrayons · 06/10/2024 16:21

I’ve worn them since I was 10, I’m -5.75 so I can’t get by without them.

I used to be really self conscious about them, I was the only person in my class at school who wore glasses for a couple of years. I wore contacts for years pretty much every time I left the house, but I can’t be bothered with the faffing about anymore so save them for nights out.

i only ever have plastic frames, I really hate the nose bridge thingies on metal ones. Plus as the lenses are pretty thick even with slimming I have to have a big frame.

@TicTac80 can i ask roughly how much you paid for consultations and the actual surgery? Thanks

I had both eyes done for £6000. One eye had severe astigmatism so needed a Toric lens which added £1000 otherwise it would have been £5,000. Each operation took 10 minutes, weird feeling but no pain or discomfort. Went home with eye dilated so lots of bright lights. Woke up next morning with good vision which got better over the day. Second eye two weeks later. Best money I’ve ever spent.

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 06/10/2024 16:25

I've worn glasses fine for years. A couple of months ago I got some new ones and they drive me mad! Took them back, they said they were fine, took them back again and the woman took one look and said "the bridge is too wide for your nose". Until she pointed it out I hadn't realised. Tried on a similar pair with a slightly narrower bridge and immediately they felt better.

Look in the mirror, are the glasses settled onto your bridge correctly?

Thank you for all the responses, I feel less alone knowing I’m not the only one who hates glasses.

When I went to the optician to enquire about contacts (the same optician who gave me my glasses a year ago) he asked why I was considering contacts. And I said, because I really hate wearing glasses (and listed some of the reasons) and he looked at me as if I was really unusual.

He said that with contacts I will need to have one eye for distance and one for reading…. I asked if other people manage that ok, and he SHRUGGED.

Maybe I should just change opticians?

Edited

i tried the two different contacts lens thing as I find it hard to read close up when I’ve got my contacts in now. It was OK and it did work, but the distance was not quite good enough and made me feel a bit unsafe especially when driving.
I just have my standard prescription and buy loads of cheap readers from the supermarket. When you’re used to spending £300 plus on varifocals and A £10 pair is such a novelty.

PassingStranger · 06/10/2024 12:43

Have the eye surgery if you can afford it.
You don't need to wear glasses at all then. No worrying, no falling around, no lost glasses.

10 years later you will need reading glasses again. But it gives you 10 extra blissful glasses free years

Ponderingwindow · 06/10/2024 16:50

I absolutely despise wearing glasses. I am autistic and have severe motion sickness. I have never adapted to them in decades.

For years it was no big deal, I just had contacts. I no pay an extremely large amount of money for my specialty multifocal, extra moisture, disposable contacts. They are absolutely worth the price and the fact that they aren’t a perfect solution.

my dd, also with ASD, was so upset over the feeling of glasses we had to pay for CBT. It failed miserably. So she ended up being a 10 year old with contact lenses.

I honestly don’t understand how people manage to wear them.

Silverstag · 06/10/2024 17:00

I also hate wearing glasses so now have contacts. One eye for reading and the other for distance. It's fantastic!

CrochetMadRosie · 06/10/2024 17:11

I hate wearing glasses too.

I had over 30 years of wearing contact lenses and did have mono vision lenses towards the end (where one eye is for distance and one eye if for close up) and it worked for me. The brain is an amazing thing!

Unfortunately I then got early onset cataracts and had two operations for that, but ended up being slightly long sighted and also can't see a thing close up!

Apparently I can no longer have contact lenses (I've asked multiple times!) and I've got a pair of varifocal glasses and an occupational pair as using the computer was a nightmare with the varifocals.

It's so annoying to have lost that peripheral vision that contact lenses give you and like you I just hate the feel of them on my face.

That wasn't helpful really, but you're not alone.

KimberleyClark · 06/10/2024 15:27

Short sighted people also tend to get less short sighted with age.

Only a bit though - max 1D

pizzaHeart · 06/10/2024 17:41

I wear glasses from age of 8, can’t say that I hate them, I made my piece by now but it was a really big hit on my confidence in teens, 20s and 30s.
At the moment I managed to find a light enough frame which suits me and fits nicely and I do the thinnest lenses available in my prescription. It helps but it is expensive, and it’s such a bother always, the small example - my hand luggage always have extra pair of distance glasses and prescription sunglasses. And a lot of things difficult to fit when you have glasses on.
Your optician does sounds bad @Fluffyflipflop . I would find another one.

Notaflippinclue · 06/10/2024 22:00

Had vari focal lenses stitched in six or seven years ago couldn't stand specs couldn't wear vari focals anyway because of vertigo - best money I've ever spent - it's a whole new world

GlindaGossamer · 07/10/2024 17:48

DanielaDressen · 06/10/2024 12:44

It was a while ago but I’m -10.5, astigmatism and unusually thin corneas. Guess I could ask again.

@DanielaDressen ah, that does sound tricky, but hopefully the technology will keep improving

N0tfinished · 07/10/2024 18:15

I had laser Surgery and would recommend. My prescription was same as yours - also had astigmatism so contacts were not a solution. 16 years later I still have perfect vision

Alina3 · 07/10/2024 18:18

I hate them soooo much too. They're just such a faff. If I ever mention that I hate wearing them people presume I mean I don't like how I look but it's not that (I look great with them on). It's how they feel and the inconvenience. Fogging up indoors, not being able to see in pools or on rollercoasters, them sliding down your nose if you sweat remotely or have oily skin, not being able to dry your hair properly with them on but not being able to see with them off. Playing piano is a nightmare with them on as the keys don't seamlessly blend into my view, they look distorted and when I look down my brain takes a second to catch up with where everything is. Even using the stairs is awkward and my sense of distance is impacted.

I'm eternally thankful for contact lenses!

endofthecorridoor · 07/10/2024 18:34

I'm the same varifocals are a pain as I don't need general glasses just long distance and a little magnifying for reading so they are on my head much of the time
They are always loose on me and fall off

Elodie9 · 07/10/2024 18:52

@Fluffyflipflop I hear you!
Specs are a remarkable invention, I have worn them for over 50 years but I still hate wearing them for all the reasons pp's have stated.
I have extreme myopia and despite the thinning lenses option and hundreds of pounds spent they still look bad.
I have no choice of frames at all and at my last appointment there was only one frame in the entire place that was suitable for my prescription.
I can wear contacts for a short time though so that helps enormously for social events and walks in the rain!

Madhouse2025 · 20/02/2025 08:21

Itiswhysofew · 06/10/2024 12:25

I'm in exactly the same position. I can't stand them!

I've got an astigmatism in both eyes and have been told I can have contact lenses but only for reading, so would still have to wear specs for screens & driving.

I've considered the laser route, but my optometrist friend advised me not to go near that.

Why not go near laser?! I’m thinking about it too …

Katemax82 · 20/02/2025 11:26

I don't personally hate wearing glasses myself but my adult stepson did to the point of not wearing them often eve though his eyesight was terrible. He got laser eye surgery as soon as he could afford it

ssd · 20/02/2025 11:57

How much does the lazer treatment cost? I hate wearing specs too, hate hate hate it.
