P taking removal men?

HomeCookingWannabe · 06/10/2024 09:43

Hi,
I am helping with a house move today. I am at new house while owner is at old house with (paid) removal men and I will then let them in when they get here (followed by owner who is carless so will take longer via public transport).

They turned up at old house and immediately asked for coffee (not unreasonable), then expected biscuits and a sandwich. On the day someone is moving house and has everything packed in boxes! Who makes a sandwich for removal men at 9.30am?!?!

I think they're out of their mind but would welcome others thoughts. AIBU?

Cheeky feckers, tell them to buy something from a shop!!!! Hot drink yes, food no chance!!!! Cheeky buggers

Octavia64 · 06/10/2024 09:46

I always had kettle packed last and offered tea/coffee and biscuits to removal men.

They usually said no but it's social convention to offer this to trades and I count removals in this.

One move we were hanging y around waiting for keys and there was only one pub nearby which we all ended up in.

HomeCookingWannabe · 06/10/2024 09:48

@Octavia64 tea/coffee yes and i could understand biscuits (though tbh moving house is so stressful I imagine most forget).

It's the sandwich that has baffled me. It's not even close to lunchtime

Tea and biscuits are fine but a sandwich is taking the piss.

I take a lunchbox to my work. They should do the same.

sesquipedalian · 06/10/2024 09:52

Agree - tea and biscuits is the limit - and if on moving day there are no biscuits, so be it. I’ve NEVER had removal men, nor indeed any other sort of workmen, expect sandwiches. That’s actually outrageous.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 06/10/2024 09:55

Agree - asking for a sandwich is completely unreasonable. They should have sorted out their own breakfast/packed lunch. When they arrive at the new house, ask them if they managed to find a sandwich shop en route!

MassiveOvaryaction · 06/10/2024 09:56

As a serious question yes they're being cf. But if your mate was eating a bacon butty and it was a laugh along with "got one of those for everyone?" sort of thing then not cf imo.

HomeCookingWannabe · 06/10/2024 09:57

@Longtimelurkerfinallyposts They packed one thing and then went off to find a sandwich place, not back yet 😂

HomeCookingWannabe · 06/10/2024 09:58

@MassiveOvaryaction 100% agree with you but definitely not the case. Mate had everything packed yesterday other than toothbrush, and just had takeaway last night - So definitely not that scenario

Oh well, priorities. Why do your job if you fancy a sandwich? 😂

mondaytosunday · 06/10/2024 10:04

If used to pack I give them donuts or similar half way through or once the van is packed. Usually they are doing it at speed and time is money so want to crack on!

HateThese4Leggedbeasts · 06/10/2024 10:06

Yup that's odd. Maybe they were out last night and suffering today! Cup of tea yes but asking for a sandwich is too much.

TheArtOfTreeHugging · 06/10/2024 10:11

They are being cf's! They should have had their breakfast before starting work.

Drinks and some biscuits, fair enough. But expecting her to make them all bloody sandwiches. And then buggering off after packing one box to find a sandwich shop...piss takers!

My dad worked as a removal man for a while. He had breakfast at home and took a packed lunch.

I'd genuinely make a complaint to the boss about that.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 06/10/2024 10:15

Are they from a proper removals company or is it a Man with a Van (and a mate)? If it's a company, your friend knows who to complain to. There's no way an employer would tolerate or condone this. Apart from anything else, it's quite wrong to put pressure on someone who is very probably already very stressed. If it's a man with a van situation, I would warn your friend to keep an eye on them and they way treat her/his stuff.

DeliciousApples · 06/10/2024 10:17

I take it you didn't eat in front of them?

If not I'd stay on their good side tbh. You don't want any bother with them on moving day.

I'd be all "I'm sorry I couldn't provide you with breakfast as everything's packed or I'd have made butties. I've only had a drink of tea myself. Nobody says breakfast was part of the arrangement".

Offer tea as "that's all I've got"

If you want to complain do it later. Pissing them off now could not end well.

shesamarshmallow · 06/10/2024 10:22

Our movers told us not to worry about trying to make them tea.

Sia8899 · 06/10/2024 10:22

I’d be annoyed they’re eating breakfast during the time they should be packing the van, 9.30 isn’t particularly early.

I’d also be concerned that the removal men think there would be food in the fridge and plates/knives in the kitchen when someone is just about to move house. Is this their first ever job??

PullUpTheDrawbridge · 06/10/2024 10:24

One of my removal men took a massive stinking dump in my toilet before I'd even had a chance to use it. Nature calls and all, but he could have cleaned up after himself better.

It isn’t your job to provide them with breakfast 🙄 Some tea/coffee and maybe some biscuits is more than enough.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 06/10/2024 10:33

TBH I wouldn't even offer tea and coffee - everything gets packed away! Definitely offer the other end but not while packing up, what a PITA.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 06/10/2024 10:42

Definitely not acceptable but, to be honest, I'd rather have cheeky removals (can always say no!) than what we got moving back from France. They stole 2 bottles of expensive single malt, a stand alone hotplate, a travel kettle, a speaker for plugging an iphone into and a travel bag. They also failed to wrap our beds correctly and damaged 3 out of 4 of them. They were an established British firm but certainly not as good as the firm which moved us out.

Blimey. Professional outfit then?!

Calamitousness · 06/10/2024 10:47

Agree. I’ve moved many times and never do the removal firm expect fed and tea/coffee. During packing up days when they do that part, I always Offer cold drinks/tea/biscuits etc. Rarely been accepted. Never actual food. And on actual
moving day/s, some of mine took several days to move and get everything in, never even offered drinks. How can you. Most people are ready to go. I mean even the removal men packed the kettle etc. they didn’t leave it out expecting drinks. No, this is awful. And they should not leave the job to get food. I would be fuming.

Greentreesandbushes · 06/10/2024 10:47

Chancers, tell them that all sandwich making materials are packed away, I’ve always made drinks, biscuits etc they are likely hungover.

My removal men were polar opposite, 2 day job, they stayed local and went out, so next day they turned up hungover but on time, with Costa in hand, even went to Sainsbury’s nearby to poo, rather than make a smell in our new house, then even asked if we needed anything bring back 😂

Paintbrushandroller · 06/10/2024 10:48

when I moved the removals ripped me off £40 they made up a story saying "they are going to be late for another job" I was alone and vulnerable and paid.. I did fight the company to get my money back, awful company any man van dont ever use.
