To think that school shoes should last at least 6 months?

Clarks: 5 months.
Next: 3 months.
Asda: 5 weeks.

Dd walks about an hour a day to school, there and back. In the past year, she has killed 3 pairs of shoes. Each time, the heel underneath has just caved. She's average height and not particularly heavy so I don't know how it happens. She favours loafers, so could this be it? Although ds' kickers only lasted 6 months, so maybe not. Or are school shoes just not fit for purpose?

With that amount of walking per day, no I wouldn't expect them to last 6 months. If your dd got the bus or a lift to school then yes I would.

Evilartsgrad · 06/10/2024 09:39

Trainers for the walk to school, then change.

I've suggested this, but she doesn't want to carry her trainers round school every day, or have to stop and change them on the way in to school.

Back in the 90s the norm warranty was 90 days. I wouldn't expect them to stand up to that degree of walking.

Can they wear trainers and change into shoes?

jeaux90 · 06/10/2024 10:12

My DD15 used to get through shoes, about 3 years ago I gave in and bought her black Jordan Air. We are just on pair number two.

They last a lot longer and seem to slip under the no trainer radar.

Not her choice if you can't or won't afford more school shoes.

That’s a lot of walking for a formal shoe style. I think 5 months out of the clarks and 6 out of DS’s kickers is pretty decent going. I also rate Startrite for longevity if you want another brand to consider. Also can you get them repaired? Depends on the style and I wouldn’t bother for plastic asda ones but if they’re decent leather ones from Clarks and it’s just the heel that’s gone then I’d take them into the local shoe repair shop and see if they can reheel them.

Singleandproud · 06/10/2024 10:16

It's the type of shoe, you want something like Clarks Hamble Oaks which can be reheeled for £7(ISH) rather than buying whole new shoes. They often go for around £17.50 on Amazon if you wait for a deal but are closer to £65 normally

MumChp · 06/10/2024 10:16

School shoes never lasted 6 months here. More than 2 pairs a year is quite normal I think if child walks a lot.

Leeds157 · 06/10/2024 10:16

Next shoes are awful, they should still be covered under warranty if they don't last a certain amount of time (think it's a year)

shesamarshmallow · 06/10/2024 10:20

You’re being U. They’re not designed for 2 hours of walking a day. Why does she have to walk so much?!

Well quite honestly I would buy a school bag with a shoe compartment and crack on.
Unfortunately the manufacturing has moved to the default people wear trainers for considerable amounts of walking.

WorkCleanRepeat · 06/10/2024 10:21

My daughter who wears your average school shoes goes through about 3 pairs a year.

My son wears black trainers and they last all year.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 06/10/2024 10:22

Your kids walk a lot more than average so I wouldn’t expect their shoes to last as long as the average child. Do they scooter? Play sport in their shoes at lunchtime ? My ds would wreck his shoes by playing basketball at lunchtime.

My kids walked about 20 minutes (a mile chatting with friends) and went through a pair a year so the shoes that lasted 5 months on your kids would have lasted 15 months on my kids.

ALunchbox · 06/10/2024 10:23

I'm surprised 6 months is seen as the norm on MN. Our (adult + children) shoes last much longer and we all walk at least 1 hour a day.

autienotnaughty · 06/10/2024 10:31

We get Clark's ds does 40 min walking each day. But I do drive him about a third of the time. So say 2.5 hours walking a week They usually last the school year.(10 months)

Your child is doing double the amount and shoes are lasting 5 months. Sounds about right.

I use Clark's outlet. Shoes are around £30.

It's the manufacturer expectation which is the experience of some. Others step lighter.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 06/10/2024 10:34

DMs. My kids walk 30 minutes up an unmade hill, they last the year and more. We have to sharpie the yellow.

autienotnaughty · 06/10/2024 10:35

It reminded me though, dd once begged for new look shoes. They fell apart after three weeks, I returned them. The shop assistant tried justify the state of them saying they weren't really suitable for walking in 😂. I got a refund.

HowYouSpellingThat10 · 06/10/2024 10:35

Does she have any issues with her gait?

I have collapsed arches and can wear out shoes because I don't hit the ground in quite the way I should.

Sometimes a decent supportive insole can make a difference to wear.

DuBoo · 06/10/2024 10:35

Try doc martens? My DS always found those indestructible.

PinkChaires · 06/10/2024 10:36

Most adults wouldn't like to lug heavy shoes all day- especially when commute is walking for one hour! Op, just buy school shoes from shoezone/primark etc - i find no matter how expensive, school shoes will be destroyed

My DD had awful trouble with this, but we were lucky enough to have a reasonably-priced handmade shoe shop in the city. The shoes they made lasted ages, could be easily resoled when required, and even have the leather stretched to keep up with her growing feet.

littleteapot86 · 06/10/2024 10:41

I only buy Doc martens for my son now. The only shoes that have held up the entire school year.
