To think that school shoes should last at least 6 months?

Clarks: 5 months.
Next: 3 months.
Asda: 5 weeks.

Dd walks about an hour a day to school, there and back. In the past year, she has killed 3 pairs of shoes. Each time, the heel underneath has just caved. She's average height and not particularly heavy so I don't know how it happens. She favours loafers, so could this be it? Although ds' kickers only lasted 6 months, so maybe not. Or are school shoes just not fit for purpose?

We only buy certain startrite shoes and DMs these days. Clark's never lasted. Go to somewhere that stocks startrite, geox, kickers kind of thing and ask for a recommendation of something sturdy.

My kids walk 40 mins to school so it's a lot of miles.

brbg2g · 06/10/2024 10:42

Both my kids still in primary go through school shoes at an alarming rate. Walking to school, football, generally running around at playtime and forest school take their toll.

We've tried everything from cheap Amazon school shoes once a month, supermarkets, kickers, geox, Clark's. All end up totally wrecked and scuffed or burst at the toes. I don't think a pair of shoes had lasted more than a month. We've just gone to black leather converse but not feeling hopeful.

No help OP just solidarity. It's so frustrating

I generally expect school shoes to last the full academic year, but we live near the school so only doing a ten minute walk there and back. I think many girls' styles aren't very robust - have you tried Doc Martens?

WonderingWanda · 06/10/2024 10:45

I think a pair of Doctor Martens would be much better for your dd with this much walking.

BurntBroccoli · 06/10/2024 10:46

Get her some Dr Marten shoes. Once outgrown they can probably be sold on.

Clark's girls shoes are rubbish!

TinaYouFatLard · 06/10/2024 10:48

Can she store her shoes at school and wear trainers there and back? I wouldn’t fancy walking that far in loafers.

Octavia64 · 06/10/2024 10:51

They don't last under that level of walking.

You want docs or similar.

When mine were very young g we wore walking boots to walk to school and changed at school. Once they get to teens they don't want to do that.

My DS got army surplus black boots. My DD went for DMs. Standard school shoes just aren't designed for lots of walking.

YouPutTheScrewInTheTuna · 06/10/2024 10:52

Really recommend Bgreater shoes, not particularly expensive for the "barefoot" category and are made well and last a long time!

MargaretThursday · 06/10/2024 10:52

Don't make her carry trainers round all day. They're bulky and they have enough to carry. Maybe suggest she does on the days she has PE.

If it's just the soles then resoling is cheaper than a new pair.

My dc were all different.
Dd1 the shoes looked as good at the end of the year as the beginning almost. She also didn't grow very fast in feet, and when she did she grew suddenly. Sometimes her shoes did 2 years and she went up 2 shoe sizes over the summer holidays.
Dd2 her feet grew quickly and she normally needed 2 pairs a year, so she didn't wear them out.
Ds wore them out through scooting/football and just wear. We normally just about got a year's wear out of them with duct tape and various other home repair methods. On more than one occasion we ended up sending a note in for the last couple of weeks of term asking for him to wear trainers for the last couple of weeks. He hated new shoes though, which helped.

Rubyandscarlett · 06/10/2024 11:43

I am in the same boat op - shoes last 5 mins but she won't wear trainers and change cos she would have to carry them around all day

coffeesaveslives · 06/10/2024 11:48

If she's doing that level of walking then no, I wouldn't expect them to last.

But it's worth looking at her gait and whether she needs some insoles - I have an odd gait due to scoliosis and uneven hips, and I wear out shoes really quickly because of it.

Martymcfly24 · 06/10/2024 11:52

My dd's just wear black laced Reebok or puma runners would that be allowed. Last year they had black sketchers which lasted all year.

Time4changeagain · 06/10/2024 12:24

Dr Martens 1461. These lasted my daughter the whole year. She also said they were the most comfortable shoes she had ever owned

Philodendrum · 06/10/2024 14:16

Thanks all.
I've been banging the dm drum for for years. I wore them from age 14 and still do. Ds will wear them. Dd, however, is desperate to follow the crowd, so it's loafers in her school. But not dm ones.

For the asda shoes, it's like the whole heel just collapses in on itself. I've never had shoes so that, even the medina ones I used to wear at her age.

She's agreed to do the trainer thing, because she's seen other kids do it.

I think a pp misunderstood before too, she walks 1 hour in total to and from school. 30 minutes, roughly, there, then back after. Pretty much the same as a number of kids at her school, unless they get lifts. No chance of that for mine though.

I just don't remember school shoes ever dying after 4 weeks before.

If her gait is all wrong, it could explain the heels wearing out really quickly. It may be worth taking her to a sports shop and getting them to look at how she walks.

IrisApfel · 06/10/2024 15:31

Mine walk a similar length of time and have never worn through a pair of soles. It's usually the toes that break thanks to playing football.
Nike air force ones seem to be long lasting for DC3 but DC4 won't wear Nike and only girls wear DM's at his school 🙄 so he's got some New Balance.

Comedycook · 06/10/2024 15:33

Last year both my dc had kickers and they lasted a whole year...but they don't have to do anywhere near that amount of walking so six months doesn't surprise me.
