If you have a young child/children-age-5-10 years?
Curious to see how a weekend in the U.K. is spent with this age group, even more so if you live in either Cornwall or the North West
What do you do at weekends?

We came back from holiday yesterday so I did loads of washing, sorted the house and went food shopping with DD (2 months). DS7 had stayed over at his grandparents' house last night (had stopped off on the way back and he had asked to stay) and spent the morning with them, going up to the playground on our local mountain. DD and I later met them for lunch at a restaurant in the forest. It was sunny all day and really still quite warm when sitting outside, which was nice. There were no tables left inside. We then got home at about half 4 and watched some TV, DS did some prep for his assessments next week, he called his dad and we had dinner.

Tomorrow, a friend will swing by. They moved last year and she's here on a business trip. We might walk to our local cafe to have some ice cream or waffles and coffee.

Not in Cornwall, though...and not in the UK, either.

Martymcfly24 · 05/10/2024 20:37

Not in your area but we were under an orange weather warning for rain all day so never left the house. Watched a lot of movies.

SunnyHedgehog · 05/10/2024 20:37

I'm northwest but my DDs are now 11 so a little out of range, today we went swimming in the morning and then had a milkshake at the garden center cafe. Tomorrow we'll go visit my mum and maybe do a charity shop visit- we have 4 in the town and the kids like having a mooch.
They've always loved a park and there's lots of big ones in our wider area so we'd head out to one of those, we've also got lots of farm shops/horse stables and they sometimes have events. If we feel the urge to go out for the full day then it's nice to get the train to Chester or Huddersfield.

Swimming lessons this morning
Home for lunch
Out again to return some paint to Homebase, looked at bikes in Halfords as ds1 needs a new one soon, shopping to get a new winter coat for ds1, new bike helmet, some more clothes for them.
Picked up food shopping from Tesco on the way home.
Home by 5.30 and quick dinner and kids watching a film now while I collapse/do laundry.

Tomorrow we will crack on with homework and go visit my mum.
Saturdays usually aren't so busy to be fair.

HaveYouSeenRain · 05/10/2024 20:41

tealandteal · 05/10/2024 20:43

Live in the Southwest, not Cornwall. I have 2 DS, one 7 and one is 2. We stayed in this morning after the dog walk. The boys did drawing, blocks etc and DS 7 did some homework. I did a few bits around the house. DH went out after lunch for his hobby. I watched a film with the boys (recently dropped nap) and then we went out to the park. Not very exciting day but both boys are shattered.

Fuck all, and it's been glorious 😂

Sofa with DS aged 5 this morning, for Disney+ (Big Hero 6, and then Hannah Montana for some reason). Ordered Pret in for breakfast 🫠

Briefly transferred to the car. Stopped for meal deals for lunch from the M&S (cheese & marmite sarnie, wispa duo, and a sprite for me!), drove to my dads.

Sat on the sofa there whilst scrolling mumsnet and placing last minute ASOS orders (work trip next week) with HIMYM on in the background. DS running round the garden like a loon.

Ordered Dominos for dinner 😋 ~ ate whilst watching Finding Nemo.

Now home to bed and I'm back to my scrolling. Snaffled a large bag of malteasers from dads stash which I'm now munching through. Probably the most unhealthy day of my life thus far (don't worry nutrition police, DS is weirdly healthy and had fruit from pret and as part of his meal deal!) but much needed after a few family health scares and a tough time at work this week.

Went park run this morning. DP runs and DD, dog and I spend the time walking. Had breakfast out. Went to Ikea. Got home for lunchtime. Did garden chores. Made a large photo collage with DD and hung it on the wall. Made dinner. Tesco just dropped off. Bed soon. DD is 13. 5 years ago we’d probably have done Lego instead of the photo collage but mostly it wouldn’t have differed.

Mrscharlieeeee · 05/10/2024 20:53

My DS are 6 and 10. Eldest DS went to a warhammer event with DH, I had an eye test this morning and then I took youngest DS out for hot chocolate and cake. In the afternoon we drove to a local country park and took the dog on a good walk. We were home about 4 so just watched tv, Da played football in the garden, then when DH and DS1 got home we made dinner and watched strictly.

GreenMarigold · 05/10/2024 20:57

Took 1 child to a day out with cubs and then did a weekly shop. After that I took the other child into town, where we went to the library and did some shopping.

Tomorrow they have swimming lessons in the morning and friends coming over in the afternoon. Need to squeeze homework in somewhere!

Hugmorecats · 05/10/2024 20:58

Did you mean to type south west rather than north west, as north west is very far from Cornwall? I live in south west and have two kids that age. Find it very hard to find things to do in bad weather.

In good weather this time of year we’re still going to the beach and local gardens with playareas for the kids, places like the garden of Heligan or farms with animals to look at. When it’s bad wind and rain it’s soft play if I can face the bad coffee and getting dragged round by the kids.

aisate · 05/10/2024 21:03

We're in London.
Swimming lesson
Frieze sculptures in Regent's Park
Playground
Birthday party
Dinner at home
Homework
Music practice

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 05/10/2024 21:06

Dropped DS off at my parents' place, napped, went to the climbing gym with a friend, cooked dinner just for myself, then crashed on the couch. DS is sleeping over at his grandparents'.

wildmushrooms · 05/10/2024 21:16

Ballet and tap lessons for DD thismorning
Home for lunch and play in the garden
Put food shopping away and made dinner
Watched a film and had popcorn with DD
Put DD to bed and now watching TV

doodleschnoodle · 05/10/2024 21:26

Left them with DH and went out with a pal Grin

doodleschnoodle · 05/10/2024 21:28

But DD1 (5) had forest school for three hours this morning. It runs the first Sat of every month. Then we will usually, if we don't have parties etc., do something like swimming or somewhere local for lunch and a walk. My two love arts and crafts too and play dough and slime and baking all that stuff so they're happy to do stuff inside (and also they do stuff like set up an animal rescue centre in the play room etc). Also we have a mud kitchen outside that they like when it's been raining.

Claudiashairismegashiny · 05/10/2024 21:36

@Hugmorecats No, I’m trying to choose between the two areas to live 😅

We're in the South East with a 4 and an 8 year old. This morning DS1 had football and DS2 had swimming (luckily near each other!), then we went to McDonalds for lunch, and straight out to the big park.

Came home around 5 and had dinner, then DS2 fell asleep pretty early and I pottered around doing housework while DS1 watched TV.

Girasoli · 05/10/2024 21:42

It was still quite nice weather here.

Itrainedallday · 05/10/2024 22:01

Cornwall here! We have 9 and 10 yo’s but the only thing that’s changed as they’ve got older is fewer trips to the park…

Yesterday evening: Boardgames and homemade pizzas

Today: Walk in the woods, trip into town for errands, shopping and nachos, homework, and then a family film in the evening by the fire.

Sunday: We usually go sailing or kayaking on calm sunny days. But tomorrow it’s too windy so we’ll be baking and at a pottery class! Then possibly out for dinner as there’s so many nice places to eat locally.

In the Summer we would go out for a walk or bike ride after dinner too!

Other things that they’ve started to enjoy on rainy days: cinema, VR / coding club, go karting, catching train to Plymouth, indoor baseball, swimming.

YourLastNerve · 05/10/2024 22:06

Kids had swimming lessons plus eldest had another sport club.

Met family in afternoon for a relative's birthday & had dinner out at inexpensive high st restaurant.

Patienceinshortsupply · 05/10/2024 22:09

Had my 2 grandchildren this age today. We went for a long walk with the dogs to the river after breakfast, then took a new planter to my Dad's grave and brought the old one back that we then planted winter pansies and cyclamen in. Played in garden collecting leaves and walnuts for an hour or so before lunch, then they settled down in front of a film (The Witches) while I did the laundry/ironing. We spend a lot of time outdoors when we have them.

South West - rural.
