If you have a young child/children-age-5-10 years?
Curious to see how a weekend in the U.K. is spent with this age group, even more so if you live in either Cornwall or the North West
What do you do at weekends?

@Itrainedallday Which part do you live in? Sounds lovely!
what age do they start not wanting to go to the playground/park as much?

We live near Falmouth.

We noticed that they stopped wanting to go to the park around 9! They still go sometimes but they “hang out” or play football / basketball rather than use the equipment.

Before that we basically had a map of cool playgrounds all over Cornwall as they’d go in all weathers 😂

Now everything revolves around food, tide times & wind gusts instead

Football and netball.
Nice family meal at 6.
Film and ice cream

I'm north west but my child is now 14 so we had a chilled morning/she talked to her friends on the phone and I did some house work. We went to an audition for her. Then came home and she got ready to go out with friends and I went for a run and then went to asda and when she came home we watched Emily in Paris.
When she was younger we used to go to the park or a farm or a soft play on a Saturday and then usually go for ice cream or mcdonalds or similar. I miss having a little sidekick.

Up early to watch youngest DC play in their football match in the sunshine. Met parents there, caught up on their news. Chatted with friends there too. Back home, made lunch for middle DC and briefly saw DS, 16 who was off out again with friends. Tidied up, DH drove DD to her theatre arts class while youngest played football in the garden with his best friend who is staying for a sleepover. Once DH was back the 4 of us drove to a National Trust for an ice cream and short walk before collecting DD. Then home for homemade pizza and films!

WiserOlderElf · 05/10/2024 23:10

I have 3, all in this age range. This morning was swimming lessons, home for lunch then we went out to a country park this afternoon. Watched a film together this evening. Tomorrow middle daughter is playing in a football match 45 mins away so DH will take her there while I do something with eldest (10) and youngest (5). Not sure what, maybe a trampoline park. Then we’ll probably do a nice dinner, homework for the elder 2, walk the dog, get ready for school etc.

Cornwall border, rural

fairly lazy start to the morning , watching TV, breakfast etc, did lots of gardening, small DD helped and earned some money (£3)
lunch (cheese on toast)
then walked round the jumble trail in our village for an hour. DD6 spent her £3 on some teddies which we then took to the park to send down the slide. Some of her play mates were there.
then home and I took bigger DD to ride her pony, I ride my bike with her, whilst DH did more gardening with little DD.
them home, fajitas for supper and a family film

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 05/10/2024 23:25

My DD is 8, today I went for a swim with a friend at local outdoor pool whilst she had a lazy morning at home with DH. Then we all went out for a 10km walk up in the hills. When got home played a game, watched some strictly, are pizza and then she did some reading and went to bed! Tomorrow is swimming lesson and out for Sunday lunch for a relatives birthday, we will probably have lazy afternoon after with fire, film and some book time.

Cornwall here! We have 9 and 10 yo’s but the only thing that’s changed as they’ve got older is fewer trips to the park…

Yesterday evening: Boardgames and homemade pizzas

Today: Walk in the woods, trip into town for errands, shopping and nachos, homework, and then a family film in the evening by the fire.

Sunday: We usually go sailing or kayaking on calm sunny days. But tomorrow it’s too windy so we’ll be baking and at a pottery class! Then possibly out for dinner as there’s so many nice places to eat locally.

In the Summer we would go out for a walk or bike ride after dinner too!

Other things that they’ve started to enjoy on rainy days: cinema, VR / coding club, go karting, catching train to Plymouth, indoor baseball, swimming.

@Itrainedallday where do you go gokarting, sounds fun!

In the South East. Yesterday was sailing training for my 10 and 13 year old and the weather was glorious. They saw all their friends and had a marvelous time and I sat on the beach and watched with my friends! It would have been perfect..... If I didn't have to tow the boats about!

7 year old too little for that sailing, so he did hockey and then loads of chess in the afternoon with his dad.

Had takeaway for tea and collapsed in a heap!

When they were littler we did lots of trips out, but now they are a bit older I find they often end up with hobby things on their weekends

North west here. It was a lovely day so we spent a few hours at the local zoo and got a big discount on a yearly membership. Then MIL watched kids whilst we went out for a neighbour’s big birthday party - fabulous food and music. A good day yesterday!

Mishmag · 06/10/2024 08:23

I’m not in either of those areas but
DC had sports club until 11
Then they watched YouTube/played Roblox while I hung out washing/made bread/cleaned kitchen a bit
Had lunch
A bit more YouTube/Roblox
8 year old and I went to the beach for a bit, 5 year old stayed home with dad as is a bit under the weather and was tired.
Came home and made dinner
8 year old and I went for a walk/scoot after dinner
Then bed.

It was nice to spend some time with just my 8 year old.

Difficultworkdecision · 06/10/2024 08:29

I took 6&8 yr old DCs to a ski lesson at 9:30, DH entertained the 2 little ones at home with TV and Duplo.

Came home and all did a quick tidy, had some lunch.

Little dc had a nap and older ones did some reading/crafting/puzzle/playing.

Walked/scooted to the park and fed the ducks

Beige dinner in front of a film for everyone

After little ones went to bed we played some board games with the older 2 which was actually really lovely.

EvilNextDoor · 06/10/2024 08:59

I got up at my normal times, fed all the animals, teens rolled out of bed around 9ish.

I washed the school uniform, made a loaf of bread and pottered around doing some small tasks. The kids did some homework and I helped teen child 2 with some of it.

After lunch I got the teens into the garden and they helped me massacre mowing the lawn (was far too wet but we have the next week of rain so I wanted to get it done) we also swept all the leaves and put them in a pile for the hedgehog 🦔

I also dragged the kids on a dog walk.

cooked dinner and then we chilled watching tv for a while before they disappeared back to their pits.

Today - the rain is due to start this afternoon so this morning so I have asked a teen to help me cover the garden furniture. One of the kids will take the dog for a walk, while the other helps me prepare a roast.

This weekend was slightly different as I am normally running around after the teens dropping them at friends and collecting them (we live in a rural location) I do remember when the kids were younger we spent Saturdays at the park, swimming lessons, visiting grandparents and generally just trying to keep the occupied.

NotMeekNotObedient · 06/10/2024 09:04

My DD had her French class Saturday morning, we went to the park and then stopped at a cafe for lunch. In the afternoon we did crafts and a board game at home. She played in the garden.

Our plan for today is to go out for an autumnal walk playing 'gofindit', it's a card game. Flying kites also popular here.

We are lucky to live in beautiful countryside but close to a large town so wet days we go to the local musuem (often have 'family Sundays with themed activities), softplay, cinema, trampolining, swimming pool, visit the library, visit family.

Our weekends tend to be pretty chilled but we do do occasional trips to National Trust properties, farms, zoos ect.

It gets harder as they get older.

Imo a regular activity like swimming, football ect helps give structure. As long as its not both days!
