Off the back of the food shopping thread I’m genuinely wondering, is there something wrong with me? šŸ˜‚šŸ˜…
How often do you buy things like toothpaste shampoo, washing powder?
I feel like I don’t even buy these things once a month. I moved into my current house exactly a year ago and since then I have bought three boxes of washing powder. I don’t take it easy with washing. Toothpaste, I probably buy once every 1-2 months. And shampoo could last me definitely two months. This is not me trying to keep things as long as possible by the way.

Same as you I'd say

DustyLee123 · 04/10/2024 15:23

Toothpaste usually every week, shampoo and washing powder maybe once a month. I suppose it depends upon how many people are using it, and how big the container is.

CatamaranViper · 04/10/2024 15:24

Toothpaste every other week maybe. Definitely open 2 a month. 3 people brushing twice a day (and one of them is a 7 year old who regularly gets told to go back and do another brush or drops the toothpaste off brush).
Shampoo about once every other month but DH and I use different shampoos and he currently has no hair so doesn't need any.
Washing tablets I buy about once a month too. Husband and son both play rugby and DH has a physical job so we do quite a bit of washing.

ComtesseDeSpair · 04/10/2024 15:25

Probably about the same as you. But there are only two of us and I do a lot of my showering at work and the gym, which means fewer towels to wash at home and less soap and shampoo etc used.

PippyPip · 04/10/2024 15:26

Also on my own and it depends. I buy my laundry liquid once a month. Bought a huge thing of washing up liquid a year ago and that’s still going strong. Toothpaste probably once every 6 weeks. Cleaning products maybe every 2/3 months. Shampoo and body wash it’s hard to say as I buy when I see my brands are on offer.

The people commenting on that thread mostly had families though? So they’d buy certain things more often than us as they’ll get used quicker.

QwestSprout · 04/10/2024 15:27

Toothpaste - once a month? We each use different ones.
Shampoo - every three months? Less?
Washing powder - never, I use an EcoEgg.

TheChosenTwo · 04/10/2024 15:28

Family of 5
toothpaste - usually order 3 every week until we have too many in the cupboard and pause for a week or two
shampoo - mine lasts 4 months but I get it for the dds at least monthly (ds and dh use shower gel 😫)
washing powder - every 6 weeks maybe?

unsync · 04/10/2024 15:31

I want to know now how much toothpaste people use per brush.

MatildaTheCat · 04/10/2024 15:32

Surely it depends on the size of product you buy and the size of your household? A box of washing powder could be huge.

i use washing capsules and buy 24 capsule packs around once in 3 weeks. Shampoo lasts ages, toothpaste no idea, I stock up a few when it’s on offer.

I want to know now how much toothpaste people use per brush.

A pea sized amount for us. It’s me and my dc 50% of the week. I brushed my teeth at least twice a day sometimes three if I’m working from home I brush. them after lunch. But to be honest when I lived with exh I don’t feel like I bought toothpaste more regularly than I do now

no idea...I always have 1 on the go and a spare.. a habit from when i was a single mum and sometimes had to wait til payday for some stuff and now i am a little better off financially, i like to make sure i always have 1 in but couldn't tell you exactly how often i buy these things.

coffeesaveslives · 04/10/2024 15:36

Toothpaste - every 4-6 weeks.
Shampoo - once a month.
Washing powder - every 3 weeks. We have animals and both work physical jobs so do a lot of laundry.

EngineEngineNumber9 · 04/10/2024 15:39

We go to Costco and stock up on a lot of these things maybe twice a year - toothpaste, loo roll, kitchen roll, fairy liquid, olive oil, bin bags, dishwasher tabs, washing powder etc. Although the last Costco foil we finished had lasted seven years šŸ˜‚

I buy my laundry liquid once a month. Bought a huge thing of washing up liquid a year ago and that’s still going strong.

We recently got a washing up liquid refill job, about 4 litres, with pump bottles. It may be a false economy, as it seems to need more than you do with Fairy.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 04/10/2024 15:47

I hardly ever buy washing powder but when I do I buy one of the massive boxes that lasts us ages - we do about 3-4 washes a week.

Toothpaste and shampoo probably once every few weeks.

Normally I buy 1.75kg boxes

I'm terrible for stocking up so buy things when they are on sale. I just looked and I have 12 Lenors, 7 Persil liquids, 5 whitening toothpastes , 3 sensitive, 9 jars of coffee, 15 Costa coffee seasonal favourites and you don't want to know how many packets of merchant Gourmet lentils!! Last time we moved house it took six months to eat all the freezer food and now we have heat subscription boxes I think it would take longer. Plus we have a chest freezer in the garage now. I'm gonna reign it in, thanks for the wskeup call

Same, I only buy stuff on sale or on offer

OneBadKitty · 04/10/2024 16:21

It's all relative surely? Depends on how many people in your household and what size packages of things you buy.

I buy huge bottles of Ariel from Costco so probably buy every 3-4 months for 3 of us, I get litre bottles of shampoo for myself and they last around 5months with washing daily. Toothpaste for two people I buy a 75ml tube about once every 2-3 weeks.

FlapsofFury · 04/10/2024 16:24

Toothpaste maybe two tubes every 6-8 weeks. We usually have 4 tubes on the go between 5/6 of us. One in the en suite, one in the main bathroom and one in the downstairs bathroom and one in DH's overnight bag.

Shampoo, I buy mine every two months or so, once a month for teen DC, DH is bald and adult DC buy their own.

Laundry, I get 24 bio laundry capsules delivered every 21 days and 24 non bio capsules every 4 weeks although I'm not really getting through the non bio ones so need to adjust that.

familyissues12345 · 04/10/2024 16:30

Toothpaste - DH and I share a tube, DS2 has his own - probably buy 2 big tubes once a fortnight

Shampoo/conditioner - we all use different, so a bottle lasts 2-3 weeks?

Washing powder - I get all cleaning stuff delivered on subscription from Amazon. Washing powder comes once every 2 months (big box of Ecover) and monthly we get a bottle of the sports wash that DS2 uses (great for smelly teens) and the dark clothing wash.

PeloMom · 04/10/2024 16:32

I buy about 5-6 shampoos a year - which is roughly like you. This is just for me- assume you’re talking about one person? I do a lot of washing (it’s one chore I truly enjoy so…) I’d say I go through a large box of washing pods (Costco size) a month but probably more (I buy in bulk so hard to keep track); but that’s for all of us. Toothpaste I’d say one a month but I use double as I brush my teeth and my retainers (Invisalign) at least twice a day but sometimes more often. However each one of us uses their own toothpaste (I don’t like the one DH likes and kiddo has a kiddie one)- so is that 2-3 tubes a month then?

Sprogonthetyne · 04/10/2024 16:37

Toothpaste seems to last forever in our house, but we do have separate tubes for most family members (different age kids ones & adult), and have a set of toothbrushes & past upstairs and downstairs.

Shampoo seems to go quite quickly, especially if we've been swimming more (default inside kids activity in bad weather).

Washing power lasts months, but I do get a massive box.

CleftChin · 04/10/2024 16:38

I'm more like you - I'd say it's probably only about every 3-4 months for toothpaste (3 of us, electric toothbrushes, pea-sized amount - although I do buy two at a time, one for the kids bathroom and one for mine)

Washing powder/liquid same - every 3-4 months (4 high capacity washes at the weekend, avoid doing it in the week) - just bought a biggun from costco though, so I'm hoping to last a good 6 months.

Washing up liquid very rare dishwasher mostly (buy those tablets ever 3-4 months - have amazon subscription)

Shampoo - I buy big bottles, so probably not even every 6 months...

I do err on buying in bulk though, so I'll always buy the big bottle/packet rather than the small one.
