Off the back of the food shopping thread I’m genuinely wondering, is there something wrong with me? šŸ˜‚šŸ˜…
How often do you buy things like toothpaste shampoo, washing powder?
I feel like I don’t even buy these things once a month. I moved into my current house exactly a year ago and since then I have bought three boxes of washing powder. I don’t take it easy with washing. Toothpaste, I probably buy once every 1-2 months. And shampoo could last me definitely two months. This is not me trying to keep things as long as possible by the way.

I only ever buy cleaning items in bulk. So once or twice a year.

Same with toothpaste, toiletries. If I see a really good deal I will buy to last 3 to 6 months (depends on cash flow)

Same with toilet roll.

So I never have to buy these items in a weekly / fortnightly shop and it does help a lot.

Problem comes in when you get so out of the loop of what these cost in supermarkets. I'm not in UK but for eg our washing detergent and toilet roll is ridiculously priced now. So I have to do a good sale search for the next lot. (usually it's black Friday)

I'm terrible for stocking up so buy things when they are on sale. I just looked and I have 12 Lenors, 7 Persil liquids, 5 whitening toothpastes , 3 sensitive, 9 jars of coffee, 15 Costa coffee seasonal favourites and you don't want to know how many packets of merchant Gourmet lentils!! Last time we moved house it took six months to eat all the freezer food and now we have heat subscription boxes I think it would take longer. Plus we have a chest freezer in the garage now. I'm gonna reign it in, thanks for the wskeup call

I feel like you and me would get on very well šŸ˜‚

DoublePeonies · 04/10/2024 17:01

Toothpaste? Feels like I'm forever buying it in industrial quantities. But probably every 6 weeks or so I buy a load of tubes.

Shampoo? All 4 of us use different stuff. DH and the boys is probably a bottle every 6 months? Me shampoo and conditioner every 3months?? I wash my hair the least often tho.

Washing 'powder' comes in boxes of 56 tablets. At 5 or 6 loads a week, that's every 10 weeks, give or take.

DoAWheelie · 04/10/2024 17:08

I tend to get 6-12 months supply in one go. So I'll get a 6 pack of deodorant, two extra large packs of toilet roll and 6 packets of baby wipes etc.

I buy it all one one very cheap shop that is hard to get to for me so I only go twice a year.

Cat food and cat litter is also delivered in bulk twice a year

I don't stock up on my food though, I buy 3-4 days worth at a time max for food.

And me! I have forty tins of posh soup, bought at various times when on offer!

EmmaEmEmz · 04/10/2024 17:21

Shampoo and conditioner - every week.

Washing powder and liquid every two weeks.

Six of us in the house

I live alone and the frequency of purchasing these products varies. At the job where I finished earlier this week (still being paid to 13/10) I took advantage of any clearance bargains. Such as shower gel 40p. One time about 5-6 years ago, we had new lines of antiperspirants so most of the old stock was discontinued. So bought 18 cans of it, lasted about 20 months!

Hedjwitch · 04/10/2024 17:22

After reading about the number of toothpaste tubes going to landfill,I switched to a refillable pump which seems to last for ever and creates less mess and waste.
Solid shampoo bars similarly seem to last a long time,so rarely need to buy shampoo.

shellyleppard · 04/10/2024 17:23

Household of three adults so..... washing powder every 6 weeks. Shampoo, conditioner shower gel and toothpaste every 3 weeks on average

Auburngal · 04/10/2024 17:24

Shampoo I don’t wash my hair in the same stuff. I have 6 bottles on the go and rotate. All started at different times as different sizes but half are nearly finished. If washing hair using the same shampoo every time my hair goes flat and dull. Even now on holiday I have two shampoos.

Shyfrog · 04/10/2024 17:26

Don’t curse me but I have very long hair it goes down to my waist and it’s thick so I go through more product. Washing powder will obviously last if youve been get a massive pack that does 140 washes or something like that. How often are you brushing your teeth because I need to buy it at least once a month. Your mouth must be foul. You can’t really compare

Onlyplans · 04/10/2024 17:29

Usually once a month, I have a big payday toiletries spending spree.

jay55 · 04/10/2024 18:07

Shampoo I buy in bulk on Amazon so annually. The rest probably quarterly. Though I did stock up on toothpaste in the US in June.

Off topic (ish) @Hedjwitch , which shampoo do you buy? I've got just below shoulder, fine but lots of it, hair and I'd really like to convert to a bar but don't know which one to try! Any recommendations? Thanks

ClementineSatsuma · 04/10/2024 19:20

WTF with this toothpaste buying?! People, it is a pea sized amount for adults, less for children.

This is 0.25g.

For a family of 4 who brush twice daily, that's 2g a day.

Let's say there's some wastage, and bump it up to 4g a day, being generous.

A standard toothpaste contains 125g. Obviously you can never get it all as some sticks inside, but let's say you can get 115g of it. It should be lasting about a month.

How are people buying toothpaste every week?!!

MiddleAgedDread · 04/10/2024 19:25

I have no idea! 2 bathrooms at home, shower stuff at work and at BF’s so there’s usually several bottles of shampoo on the go at once and I buy them 2-3 at a time.
toothpaste I buy 2 or 3 at a time when it’s on offer as i buy a really expensive one.
wshing powder is 24 capsules so that’ll last 4-6 weeks.

Hedjwitch · 04/10/2024 19:27

@familyissues12345 gosh, there are so many different ones its hard to recommend any one in particular. You could start at Lush,if you buy their products or local businesses. Having said I use a shampoo bar,I recently switched to UpCircle's shampoo mousse in a jar and will never use anything else now. Its utterly brilliant. A very little goes a long way so a jar lasts a good while. And its refillable!

Floralnomad · 04/10/2024 19:28

Toothpaste I buy in multi packs at Costco so probably every 6 months ( 2 types of toothpaste) , shampoo every few months but I buy 2/3 and washing powder every few months .

Hedjwitch · 04/10/2024 19:28

Also recommend Little Blue Hen for shampoo bars

I literally answered that question… I brush them 2-3 times a day. My mouth is in no way foul! I floss daily too and im nearly 40 with no fillings so I must be doing something right

45fatandtired · 05/10/2024 09:16

I bulk buy these things on offer , shampoo I probably have 30 shampoos under my bed lol, so I never run out , I'm addicted to toiletries lol.
I also buy the huge Ariel at cash n carry & all the different lenors so I can honestly say i've never run out ,
I know this wasn't your question by the way lol

Disappearedwife · 05/10/2024 10:08

we definitely seem to get through toothpaste slower than everyone on this thread but we do have one each. I guess we replace every 2-3 months?!?!

Ohright01 · 05/10/2024 10:13

I hardly buy any of that but it’s only me and a teen at home. Things like shampoo last me ages.

Headingtowardsdivorce · 05/10/2024 10:15

I've no idea, I don't keep track of things like this and tend to bulk buy when they're on offer anyway.
