Can’t get it under £100 for two of us. We shop at one of the cheapest supermarkets. That does include every meal though, and all toiletries etc. I don’t eat meat and DH rarely. Family of 3 but baby won’t be adding to the cost us for a while due to breastfeeding. I thought prices were supposed to be coming down yet it seems to be going up and up?!

Do you need toiletries every week? I couldn’t think of toiletries that I need to buy every week.

Meadowfinch · 04/10/2024 12:12

It's interesting what others think is essential. I basically allow £3.50 a day each.

Breakfast is coffee/water, wholemeal toast with butter & jam or porridge, and a piece of fruit. - 50p
Lunch is home made soup and crusty bread or a sandwich - £1
Supper might be cassoulet or spag bol or cod, chips and peas, or seafood risotto or chicken fajitas . Fruit & creme fraiche for dessert, . £2

That leave £10 for ds' snacks and cleaning products/ toothpaste & soap.

Because you shop at local butchers and independent shops. It’s not rocket science, they’re more expensive than Aldi/Asda. I also shop at butchers/farm shops etc but accept that it makes our shop more expensive.
You also host twice a week and buy alcohol. Costs more than someone who doesn’t host or buy alcohol. It’s really quite simple 😁

I actually said I try to shop at local shops and butchers but it’s too expensive! I do my big shop as Asda or Lidl and buy the odd thing at the butcher’s etc.

I feel a lot better seeing this! My friend was saying she can do it for £60, two adults and one child. I think when people give prices like this though it can’t be every meal and must not include top up shops or household items

No, I think it's difficult to include everything. I have online loo rolls, washing liquid and cat food (don't laugh) and they are not included in the 'supermarket shop. I bulk buy things like Flash or equivalent in 5l bottles from time
I think I spend about £75 -£100 on actual food for 2 adults 3 meals a day, not including the items above.

Woodstocks · 04/10/2024 12:17

Yes it is extremely expensive. Even if you eat all meals at home or take packed lunches and don’t do takeaways and meals out.

We are very frugal and are noticing just everything more expensive and gone so fast.

Lurkingandlearning · 04/10/2024 12:18

Products are still getting smaller too. Roll on deodorant almost as small as travel size.

Travel size must only be fit for a doll’s house now.

sorrythetruthhurts · 04/10/2024 12:20

Not sure what you're buying that's costing so much from a budget shop. We spend £140 a week for two adults and that includes £25 on steak. We shop only at M&S and Waitrose and have some other household goods delivered from Amazon. (Doesn't include skincare or haircare products).

anniegun · 04/10/2024 12:21

The number of people that think inflation coming down means food prices should be reducing is amazing

Statsworry1 · 04/10/2024 12:22

How often do people buy toilet roll? I moved into my house last October and I have bought 3 packs of 24 rolls since then…I still have about 16 rolls left

riversflows · 04/10/2024 12:23

I spend about £40-£50 for one person. It's ridiculous how unaffordable many things are now.

Once a year I get a box from who gives a crap

Statsworry1 · 04/10/2024 12:27

@riversflows thank you, do you think this is cheaper than buying in a supermarket? How many are in a box?

Cos surely they can’t go up any further!

I was a child in the seventies and remember my parents' generation complaining about the same thing as inflation was rampant. Believe me, prices can certainly go up further - well beyond what we think is possible. The only certainty is that they will not come down.

SweetPea201 · 04/10/2024 12:29

So agree!
Family of 5 here and usually try and keep it under £130 for the 'big shop' however I find this is usually only 2/3 evening meals for the week, and I'm usually walking round the shop thinking ahh we can manage without that this week - things like kitchen roll, ready made snacks etc if I really got what we needed I would say it could easily be £200 if not more a week.
and also about 3/4 days after the big shop everything has ran out so we spend the last few days of the week making do!!!

WaltzingWaters · 04/10/2024 12:30

Yeah my fruit and veg top up shop came to £70 for 2 adults and a toddler. Literally fruit/veg and 4 pints milk, one tub of yoghurt. It’s depressing!

£100 sounds fine if it includes toiletries.
We average about £70-£80 on the weekly shop for 2 adults a child and 2 cats. It doesn't include things like cleaning products or toiletries which I just buy as and when required. Also no alcohol, as again I'll only buy that occasionally for at home.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/10/2024 12:32

4 years ago we spent £135 for 3 adults and one teen.

Now we spend £170 for 3 adults ( 2 gf)

lolit · 04/10/2024 12:32

betterangels · 04/10/2024 11:24

Once prices go up, they never come back down. Consumers get used to it and/or change their shopping habits. It's a harsh reality.

I almost never eat meat now, eggs are a 'sometimes' thing and treats are rare. Am also down to eating twice a day. Because soon I'll have to turn on the heat.

It's shit. I'm only glad I don't have to keep anyone else alive.

See if any charities near you have a food club you can join.

MammaGisAF · 04/10/2024 12:32

Ours is about £120 a week for 2 adults and 2 children under 10 but the children get free school meals. That includes all cleaning products, toiletries, alcohol. I always have to replenish fruit during the week.
It certainly has crept up but I’ve switched from sandwiches to soup at lunch, which does make a difference and hardly anything is branded.

EvilNextDoor · 04/10/2024 12:33

Honestly for 2 adults 2 x teens I cannot get my shop below £140 a week, and that doesn’t include pet food. I tend to only eat 1 meal a day and that’s dinner.

We rarely eat out, even a McDonald’s or Burger King is £45 now a days for 4 meals.

Cooking from scratch is expensive, I buy a family lasagna for £5-8 can’t make one for that anymore.

Fruit and vegetables are expensive.

It’s depressing, and I always end up spending another £20-40 on a top up shop

Hoardasauruskaren · 04/10/2024 12:35

I’m always shocked at how much mumsnetters spend on a weekly shop ! Maybe I’m a complete cheapskate but l spend on average £120 on 5 adults (dc are 21,19 & 19). We eat mainly home cooked meals & get a takeaway around once a fortnight! DH is home all day so eats most meals at home. I always take lunch to work while dc are a mix as they have varied schedules. Dinner is cooked for all 5 of us and if someone is out for dinner there will be leftovers for a lunch. I shop in Aldi & we rarely throw anything away! DS1 loves cooking & is really inventive. He lived away for 2 years on a student loan so has learnt to cook on a very small budget.

Switcher · 04/10/2024 12:37

I spend £180 in Sainsbury's a week for 5 (kids are 6,9, and 11), including their lunches and cleaning stuff, but excluding toiletries and wine. I therefore drink about 1 glass of wine a week.

colouringindoors · 04/10/2024 12:37

Yep still going up for me. So much inflation over the last year, sone things doubled and are still going up. I walk around the supermarket looking at the prices if things with a constant "How Much?!" in my head! It's rubbish.

whowhatwhen · 04/10/2024 12:38

We are a fan of three, son is five, we spend £80-£100 a week at Tesco depending on how many big house things we need. We cook completely from scratch, eat veggie about a third of the time.

muddyford · 04/10/2024 12:41

Inflation coming coming down just means prices are going up but not as much.
