To be annoyed to see my (foreign) name misspelt in work email?

Startingagainandagain · 03/10/2024 14:59

We are working with an external agency on a project.

I am originally from an EU country and I have a first name of Latin origin, but frankly not that difficult to spell correctly.

The agency lead sent me an email, with several of my team members copied in, where they misspelt my name, anglicized it and turned it into a male name in the process...

I have spoken to the agency contact on Teams and emailed them several time so they know full well I am a woman. My name is on my email signature so there is no reason not to spell it correctly.

AIBU to think this is rather unprofessional and to feel annoyed that someone could not double-check they had spelt a foreign name correctly in a work context?

Should I point this out to them or let it slide?

It matters when it’s a “foreign” name being Anglicised, or someone simply not being arsed to learn to spell/pronounce a foreign name.

But people, probably the same people, also can’t be arsed learning English names. The ‘foreign’ aspect is secondary and I would bet is rarely discriminatory but just sloppiness.

A lot of people have foreign names in England though.

I was born in England. My name is originally a French name. My mother just liked it.

I honestly don't care in the slightest if people get it wrong.

I once let a woman call me the slightly wrong name to my face for two weeks in a small office, as I just couldn't be bothered correcting her!!

Nothungrycat · 03/10/2024 17:26

I was leading a restructuring process and a member of staff involved wrote to apply for the new role - one of the criteria being a good attention to detail. She spelt my surname wrong in the letter that she wrote, despite having worked with me closely for a couple of years AND my name being on the company letterhead. She was quite indignant when I pointed this out…

Marchitectmummy · 03/10/2024 17:27

People spell names incorrectly all the time, my name has been spelt in various ways throughout my life. I honestly can't bring myself to care about it. My name is English, but you seem to think as yours is foreign you should be afforded more attention to detail, which is bizarre.

Names are to identify you from someone else, you knew the email was for you so job done. It's petty to correct them, I would view it as quite passive aggressive. If ypu really want to correct them, do so in your reply about whatever the actual email was about. Reply first and just add it at the end of that.

I have a very common name that nonetheless has a few different possible spellings (like Ana / Anna for example). People get it wrong all the time. Couldn’t care less. Life’s too short to manufacture issues where there are none.

This.

My name gets misspelled about 60% of the time.

it's just not a big deal.

What does ‘anglicized’ mean in your post? My point being unfortunately accidents / autocorrect happen. When married I moved to a very common English married name - I am surprised how many people spell it wrong.

I suppose she means like

Wiktoria in Polish

being spelled Victoria

Happens to me all the time - like you, I have a foreign name but one that should be easy enough for English language speakers. I don't even correct people unless it's going to be printed/displayed somewhere, going out to a client, or similar. I figure it makes them look bad, not me!

Same. My name is frequently turned into the male version - think Michael instead of Michaela - or into an 'alternative' female name (so Michelle, using this same example). This has been happening for 40+ years in a variety of countries and settings.

To make things worse, people often get my surname wrong too even though it's only 5 letters. Or address me by my surname thinking it's my first name. Or get my surname wrong and call me Mr too. The most annoying ones are when they reply to an email from me so my correct name is right in front of them but they still get it wrong. Honestly people, just copy paste!

It gets very tedious. But people make mistakes and some people are just stupid.

I rarely bother to correct them these days unless it's something official or if I'm in a particularly foul mood and already raising an issue about bad service to them.

That's it.

Although in this instance it would Wiktoria becoming to Victor...😅

Ive nearly missed appointments because of it
Sitting waiting for my name (changed) Samantha Davies to be called

They shout "Samuel Davidson" then get annoyed when I don't answer. I'm female for a start and neither of those are my name!

sharpclawedkitten · 03/10/2024 17:44

I have a straight-forward first name, but mistype it myself quite often - it's just the combination of letters seems to come in a different order!

My surname on the other hand is short and simple but people get it wrong All The Time and I even live in an area where there's a local connection so you'd think they would get it right!

For example, imagine living in Bude and your surname was Bude but people decide to spell it Boode or Buude.

Mind-boggling.

As for my birth surname, well people were completely incapable of getting that right even though it's phonetic and not that hard either.

What can you do!

SallyWD · 03/10/2024 17:44

I'm British but have a foreign surname through marriage. People have repeatedly spelt it and said it incorrectly.
It's never occurred to me to be offended. I know they're not doing it maliciously. They're just not familiar with it and get it wrong.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 03/10/2024 17:45

I have a foreign name that many can't spell or pronounce correctly. And I'm included in lots of mailshots and marketing campaigns that are clearly for men, addressed to 'Mr' MY NAME so clearly lots of people think I'm a man too.

It's been like this all my life. I don't think anything of it and don't consider it rude or otherwise. It's just a mistake. I wouldn't email anyone to tell them their mistake. If it bothers you, just mention it in passing next time you speak.

If I got offended every time my name was written or pronounced incorrectly I'd be exhausted. Just let it go.

Lemonadeand · 03/10/2024 17:45

I get this all the time (unusual name, not foreign). I will often reply to the offending colleague and spell their name wrong on purpose.

Wehavealaughdontwe · 03/10/2024 17:49

My Welsh name is constantly spelt wrong and it has caused so many problems. They really should be checking they are spelling names correctly, particularly when setting up important accounts, using email addresses etc. as in my case.

WolfFoxHare · 03/10/2024 17:52

It may have been an autocorrect. I sent an email from my phone the other day, addressed to Alexander instead of Alexandrine - I’d flubbed it as I was typing and iPhone changed it and I hit send without proofreading. I saw it immediately after sending so emailed to apologise.

Freemanhardyandwillis · 03/10/2024 17:53

I have a common name which has two very common but different spellings. I often get the wrong one used in emails even though the correct spelling is right there in the email address they have used. Annoying.

CastleCrasher · 03/10/2024 17:56

Autocorrect is horrible for this. I've lost count of the number of times I've sent it nearly sent emails with my own name misspelled due to it. (I have added it to the dictionary, it still incorrects it!)

My colleague Marc got so annoyed at people spelling his name Mark he had a name plate on his desk changed to Marc Withersea - would always correct people

Reminds me of something on Reddit once where another Marc was tired of having his name misspelled.

In Starbucks when they ask your name he said 'Marc with a C'

His cup said 'Cark'

It still makes me laugh now and I read it years ago.

Nannyoggapple · 03/10/2024 18:04

The reality is that no one cares much about anyone else' name.

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 03/10/2024 18:09

I have a very unusual name which is only a letter away from a still unusual but less so name.

Autocorrect often changes my name, and because the sign-off of an email is the bit I forget to double check, I have been known to sign off MY OWN EMAILS with the wrong name so I can't really take anyone else to task for it.

SemperIdem · 03/10/2024 18:12

I would definitely correct them until they get it right. I wouldn’t assume the error is because your name is foreign though, laziness regarding names in emails is absolutely rife! It really irritates me!
