I genuinely considered doing this when one came up for sale near me! 🤣

FuzzyPuffling · 02/10/2024 14:38

I used to have one (1964 model). It was very basic compared with a modern car.

KimberleyClark · 02/10/2024 14:43

My mum had one when I was little. Always fancied one myself!

No power steering!

Do it!

dixkybow · 02/10/2024 14:50

Only if you are/have/know a decent mechanic.

Can it fly and turn invisible?

Stablehand · 02/10/2024 14:53

That would be great if it could !

OP posts:
VestPantsandSocks · 02/10/2024 14:53

Sounds great! Pootle away!

Allmarbleslost · 02/10/2024 14:53

Do it!

It's called a Ford Angela in our house after DD misread it in Harry Potter

FuzzyPuffling · 02/10/2024 15:05

No power steering, no seat belts, no flick wipe or rear wiper, no cd player or radio...and a choke to help starting it!

I loved mine!

RobinEllacotStrike · 02/10/2024 15:07

I'm very tempted to buy a small old car for the fun of it.
My dream small old car would be a Triumph Vitesse convertable, but a Ford Anglia would be incredible too.

got for it OP!!

Iheartmysmart · 02/10/2024 15:13

My dad had one and it got stolen ☹️ Go for it OP, can’t beat a classic car. Watch out for Whomping Willows though.

HomelessAngua · 02/10/2024 15:13

No road tax or MoT when over 40 years (iirc) and classic insurance potentially

My first car was a Triumph Herald Mark 1. 1962 model, it was 4 years older than me! Very quirky to drive. Always wanted a Vitesse. 😍. If I had a garage and endless cash I’d buy one now.

Elphamouche · 02/10/2024 15:19

My dad still drives his!

RedPony1 · 02/10/2024 16:08

Do it!!!

Quite basic stuff, anyone with good general mechanical knowledge, a toolbox of tools (pre-metric) and a few You Tube videos should be OK.

My neighbour had a lovely Vitesse convertible which she left out in all weathers. It was going green with mould and used to make me so sad watching it slowly decay. Then one day it disappeared, returning some weeks later fully restored and looking amazing. She now uses it daily and I have real car envy.

I did just this with a Morris Minor. It was perfect for getting the kids to school and the insurance was stupidly cheap. Added bonus was I could do all the mechanics on the thing myself and to this day it remains the best car I ever drove in the winter weather. It could fly up our hill in the deepest of snowfalls.

At the time I'd also considered a really old hearse, but the kids went to catholic school and the car park was part of the church so thought better of it.

Don't forget the battered Haynes Manual with coffee rings on the spark plugs page. If it's not in there, you don't need it.

I’d never want to drive a car without power steering again. Having learnt to drive in one years ago, I shudder at the thought.
