To think this was disgusting behaviour

Driving down a residential road, 2 lads about 16/17 stroll out in front of me, headphones in, clearly not paying attention to the road. I obviously slow right down and beep loudly to alert them, they barely respond or look up but I see them smirk at each other. Next thing, I hear an incredibly loud shout of, "fuck off!!", look briefly to my left to see a teenage girl of about the same age gesturing at me and shouting profanities. I mean, was that hugely necessary? Absolutely disgusting behaviour. I have a 17 year old daughter and if she behaved that way I'd disown her! What is wrong with some young people today?!

You very unnecessarily beeped at them very loudly.

Every action...

Are you really surprised?

And how exactly would one beep quietly? Didn't think there were volumes with car horns

It's all very British these people telling you you beeped loudly OP, like you really should install a quieter horn, maybe one one that just says err excuse me, pardon me.... 😆

And I do hope most of the folk on here don’t holiday in many large European cities, my god they'd be disgusted with all the racket, quite..

Actually, the OP said it herself:

I obviously slow right down and beep loudly to alert them

So, equally, how can she beep loudly vs quietly?

Quite true, question still remains how would you beep quietly?

BTW this is just sarcasm before anyone starts, this thread is hilarious from both sides

rudeteenager · 02/10/2024 20:08

Very good point re the volume of the beep - I mean, obviously I do not have a volume control on my horn so all beeps are the same volume I'd assume 😂 not entirely sure why I described it as beeped loudly when very clearly, you can't do that. Maybe on reflection I meant, suddenly, or urgently?

But yes - I accept I cannot beep at various volumes 😂

So, two pedestrians crossed the road and caused you to slow down/stop. And you think you were reasonable to beep your horn at them? Then you got shouted at by a teenage girl?

Firstly, this situation is not worth getting upset over. Secondly it's the pedestrians who have right of way. You are supposed to give way to people crossing the road. So you were wrong to use your horn. You didn't have right of way. No it wasn't right that you were sworn at, but legally you were in the wrong. You should have seen the pedestrians before they crossed and been driving at or slowed down to an appropriate speed to stop in time. Being aware of hazards is part of driving.

Jesus, the bar for behaviour is set so LOW now! People think that a teenager yelling "Fuck off" to a stranger is normal, acceptable behaviour 😮

I was beeped by a random car (or at least believed that it was directed at me) I'd react in the same way.

Sorry, what? 😂
You'd scream "fuck off!!" at full volume and gesture with your hands, if you heard an unexpected beep of a horn? 😳

This actually happend to me earlier this week. I did respond by yelling profanities. I am 36 lol. Driver was a weapons grade prick tho so I don't feel even remotely bad.

Doesn’t matter if they choose to step out. They do have priority over you in your car.

Ok, so I can just walk out in front of cars willy nilly, and if they hit me it's their fault because I have priority? And if they dare to beep at me for doing so, they're angry and they should pipe down and let me get on with meandering aimlessly all over the road with no warning, and without even looking first?

Gotcha. I'll just pop off and do that now, then.

🤣

Legally, yes.

You were in a residential area which obviously would have people around, coming from anywhere. You saw them and slowed down as you should have, but you didn’t have to beep at them to make them aware.

I agree they should have been more aware yet considering they are in a residential area where cars should be going slow and drivers should be even more aware than anywhere else in the first place, it was unnecessary. The behaviour of the teen girl was not great either.

You both were unreasonable.

I wouldn’t have shouted at you, but I would have rolled my eyes at you and shook my head at you and the teens for not looking where they were going.

Honestly that was absolutely disgusting behaviour, I had my windows up and my music on and yet still heard her shouting profanities at me, so that's how loud she was. Pleased I didn't have my toddler in the car. Like I say this isn't anything to do with "the youth of today",🙄, most teenage girls are lovely, including my own and her lovely friendship group. This was something else, and so uncalled for. I wasn't even beeping at her for a start - it had nothing to do with her!

Yeah; it doesn't matter how lovely they are to your face they've all done something similar!
It's called being a teenage girl looking to impress a couple of teenage boys!
I've yet to meet a single teenager that doesn't swear in public when their parents aren't around!

You can control the volume of your beep! The harder you press the horn the louder the beep.

You beep quietly by not pressing the horn down fully! It's how you do a cheeky little beep if someone hasn't noticed the lights have changed to green; rather than a loud I'm annoyed beep.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 06/10/2024 08:20

I think honking your horn is seen as an escalating behaviour. I’ve been blasted by someone when driving and it really did get my back up. They obviously thought it was warranted. I did not. It just made me angry and I guess it made this girl angry too.

Ok my post was just satire (really not sure how anyone took it seriously) but if your going to reply to it seriously then no that is still not a quiet beep, the horn has no volume adjustment just duration of noise.

ANonEMouse6 · 06/10/2024 09:15

Sounds like they were trying to demonstrate to each other just how ‘cool’ they all are. Sometimes some teens do this and if they get a rise out of someone caught in the crossfire all the better! You played into their hands OP, hence the smirk…

I have had similar before as to what the boys did but, TBH, it was a roll my eyes get in with my day move on my part which takes the wind out of their sails more than you giving them a reaction!

Personally I’ve been subject to worse behaviour on the roads by other drivers who can’t drive for shit or use an indicator at all in my time. Again, though, after all these years I am so bloody unsurprised and desensitised to it now though that I roll my eyes and get the hell on with my day because I accepted a long time ago that nothing I do is going to change it after the event.

You were rude to use your horn - that isn't what it's for. They were rude to swear at you.

Ultimately, you're an adult and you started it, so I think you don't have a lot to complain about.

From the ‘net.
‘The horn is activated to warn others of the vehicle's presence or approach, or to call attention to some hazard.’
Which is what the op used it for!

Noglitterallowed · 06/10/2024 09:56

Was she in the wrong yes but you have MAJORLY blown this out of proportion!! From the defensive responses to anyone that hasn’t agreed with poor old you the innocent female driver who is now scarred for life from this traumatic even then I’d hazard a guess it wasn’t just a little beep of the horn!
also guaranteed your daughter does infact do things with her mates that you wouldn’t like.
Let it go and move on for goodness sake

Mine actually does have different volumes the harder I press the louder it is. The length of beep is controlled by the length of time I press it for.

Manthide · 06/10/2024 12:12

I would hate to think my 16 year old dd would ever swear at a stranger in the street - or anyone really but definitely not a random stranger. I've never heard her say anything stronger than 'bloody' which she insisted was not swearing but as I think it is she is not allowed to say it at home and has refrained.
She does go around with a small gang and I certainly hope they're not disrespectful to others when out together. Most of her friends and ds (21)'s seem well mannered.

DontBeADick11 · 06/10/2024 12:40

This thread is making me lose faith in humanity!! OP you weren’t in the wrong. I’d have beeped them too for being such dimwits. And the girl clearly comes from a classy background 🤪

Scottsy200 · 06/10/2024 15:45

There’s no fear or respect these days I’m afraid because they basically know that nothing can happen to them, not like back in the day when a a stranger in the neighbourhood could give them a clip round the ear for doing something wrong, I was bought up with a healthy fear that if I misbehaved something bad would happen, that’s also why schools are so bad these days, kids can basically get away with whatever they like unfortunately

FixTheBone · 06/10/2024 15:50

rudeteenager · 02/10/2024 12:47

So many people on here who'd apparently be absolutely fine with being told aggressively to "fuck off" and having a gesture waved at them by a random teen in the street. Eye opening ...

Suspect most people would have tutted, or mumbled something under their breath and gone on with their day....

If you walk out in front of a moving vehicle you deserve to get beeped at. What is wrong with people on here? Just because you have right of why doesn't mean you should just wander into the road

The girl was obviously a rude gob shite, like she really thought the op was about to catcall her 🤣
